Previously, we gave you some juicy videos from Grey’s Anatomy‘s exciting 2009 debut “Wish You Were Here.”  Apparently, central to this episode is the case of the death row inmate, injured in some prison brawl, who is brought to Seattle Grace not a lot of time before he faces the capital punishment.  From one of the sneak peaks, we learn that the possibility of saving the guy from lethal injection brings up some ethical and possibly moral dilemmas between the doctors.  From the looks of it, it will be Derek (Patrick Dempsey) and Cristina (Sandra Oh) up against Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Major Hunt (Kevin McKidd).

Perhaps unknown to a lot of Grey’s Anatomy fans, however, is the fact that the person who’ll be playing the death row patient in a three-episode arc has in fact directed two of this season’s episodes, “Brave New World” and “These Ties That Bind.”  And not only that, E! Online reports that Eric Stoltz himself has revealed that his character will cause somewhat of a rift between the so far happy couple Derek and Meredith.  MerDer fans will predictably sigh in relief because their couple – and the show’s main couple, in theory – is finally getting some serious plot.

“I would have to say that I insinuate myself in between Mer and Der in a way that isn’t exactly helpful,” Stoltz said.

True enough, the previews alone reveal that the doctors will be facing off, as Derek is “pro-punishment” while Meredith being Meredith is a little on the compassionate side.  Cristina is also brought into the picture, as the case will reportedly erode her friendship with Meredith further.

On a lighter note, Stoltz said the cast had its way on him when they found out he’d be playing a guy handcuffed to a bed.  “I think the person who took the most advantage of my position was Patrick Dempsey.  More than once, that man gave me noogies and tickled my feet,” he said.
