During the 2019 Comic-Con in San Diego, Disney unveiled “Phase Four” of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This includes not just blockbuster movies but also a number of TV series that will be released over the next few years — into 2023.
In addition to movies like “Black Widow,” “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” and “Thor: Love and Thunder,” the news included an announcement about several new TV series. They include the recently released “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” “WandaVision,” “Loki,” and “What If….”
It also includes Marvel’s “Secret Invasion.” The new series, which will air on Disney Plus, is based on a popular comic book series, written by Brian Michael Bendis, of the same name. It’s a crossover series between several popular superheroes and, as such, will include some of your favorite MCU characters.

When Will the Marvel “Secret Invasion” TV show Be Released?
When Disney made its announcements in 2019, no one could predict how a pandemic would shift everything from filming and production to the release of every planned movie and television series. Now, things are getting back on track, and we know a little more about when the next installments from Marvel will release.
While Disney has not yet given a release date for the Disney Plus premier of “Secret Invasion,” what we do know is that filming was supposed to have begun in early 2021. With that in mind, it seems reasonable to anticipate a 2022 release. The episodes will most likely appear weekly, as have other Disney Plus series like “WandaVision” and “Loki.”
In the meantime, you can look forward to the release of the “Hawkeye” series on Nov. 24, 2021, and “Ms. Marvel,” which will feature Marvel’s first Muslim main character and should be released sometime in 2022.
What Is Marvel’s “Secret Invasion” About?
If you saw “Captain Marvel” that came out in 2019, you’re probably already familiar with the mysterious shape-shifters known as the Skrulls. In that movie, the Skrulls are portrayed as a people in need of a safe space, having been denied refuge and basic rights by the Kree Empire. In “Secret Invasion,” the Skrulls have turned into enemies who have infiltrated Earth and are posing as important people. If you haven’t seen “Captain Marvel,” you might want to watch it on Disney Plus before the series begins.
Several familiar faces from the movie will appear in the show, like Talos and Nick Fury (who have appeared in numerous Marvel movies). The two end up banding together to reveal the Skrulls.
If the series stays true to the original comic book series, the story will pick up after we’ve discovered something is truly wrong within the MCU. In the Civil War issue, we discover that what’s wrong is the secret invasion of the Skrulls. Fury and Talos will need help to stop them. They’ll bring together characters from the Avengers, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four to reveal and stop the Skrulls.
The Skrulls have, over a period of time, shape-shifted into the forms of several recognizable Marvel characters. There’s even been discussion over some decisions made during various movies and series by some of the characters. The speculation is that some of what seems to be out of character will be revealed as Skrulls impersonating some highly placed characters.
With that in mind, there’s potential for some rumors to be put to rest about the previous actions of characters. Whatever happens, though, if the story stays true to the comics, the ramifications of the plotline will be felt throughout the MCU, including possibly in some of the upcoming films.
Where Does “Secret Invasion” Take Place?
While we don’t know a lot about the plot yet, if the TV series stays true to the comic book storyline, the show will take place on Earth, in particular, New York. On Earth, the Skrulls have invaded and are hiding as imposters. Because that includes some known names within the MCU, it will likely involve some familiar faces. With some characters from other movies and series involved, you should also expect to see familiar S.H.I.E.L.D. building locations — in the comic books, the Skrulls destroy several of them.
Who Are the Heroes of Marvel’s “Secret Invasion”?
Not much is known yet about who will appear in Marvel’s “Secret Invasion.” However, we do know that Samuel L. Jackson will reprise his role as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn will reprise his role as Talos.
Emilia Clarke, who you may recognize from “Game of Thrones” or “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” is excited to join the MCU, but we aren’t sure what her role will be here yet. Same with Olivia Colman, who previously appeared in “The Crown” and “Fleabag.” Killian Scott has also been confirmed, but his role has not yet been released. There’s also some speculation that Chris Evans’ Captain America might be returning, possibly even to “Secret Invasion.”

Who Are the Villains of Marvel’s “Secret Invasion”?
Here again, we don’t know much about who will portray the villains we love to hate in “Secret Invasion.” Kingsley Ben-Adir has been confirmed as the main villain, but his exact role is still unknown. Christopher McDonald has also signed on to the cast, and there has been a lot of speculation that he will reprise his previous role as Norman Osborn, a Spider-Man villain, although neither he nor Disney will confirm if that is the case.
