“Aharen-san wa Hakarenai” (阿波連さんははかれない) is a manga about a girl who doesn’t understand social or physical boundaries (but in a cute way). Asato Mizu writes and illustrates the Japanese series that first appeared as a manga online via Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ platform in 2017 — with 12 volumes at present. Mizu has also written other popular manga series like “Denkigai no Honya-san,” a romantic comedy about workers in a doujin shop (a store that sells self-published works). It ran from 2011 to 2017 and was turned into an anime series that ran in 2014.

In July 2021, the service announced that an anime adaptation of Mizu’s manga series was being developed. If you like to read manga with charming storylines about school life or if you like watching awkward romantic comedies, “Aharen-san wa Hakarenai” could be the perfect show to keep you entertained.

There are several big names in anime attached to the project. The show’s chief director, Yasutaka Yamamoto, has previously directed projects like “The Squid Girl: The Invader Comes From the Bottom of the Sea!” and “Servant x Service.” Yamamoto will be assisted by director Tomoe Makino, who’s worked on projects like “Recovery of an MMO Junkie” and “Woodpecker Detective’s Office.”

Yuko Yahiro handles the character design for the anime. Yahiro has been involved in projects like “Attack on Titan: Junior High” and “Diabolik Lovers.” Meanwhile, Takao Yoshioka, who’s written for projects like “Elfen Lied” and “I’m Standing on 1,000,000 Lives,” is in charge of series composition. Satoru Kosaki, who’s written music for shows like “BEASTARS” and “Lucky Star,” will score the TV anime with help from the MONACA studio.

In this article, we’ll give you a synopsis of the “Aharen-san wa Hakarenai” manga, tell you what you can expect from the show, and let you know when and where you can catch the anime series for yourself.

When Will the Aharen-san wa Hakarenai Anime Premiere?

Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ service broke the news that the show was being created in July 2021. They stated that it would have a release date of sometime in April 2022 in Japan. So far, no delays have been announced for the show. There is also an official website that confirms the broadcast date.

However, several anime studios have experienced severe production delays during the coronavirus pandemic, like “The Rising of the Shield Hero” and “World’s End Harem.” The production team for “Aharen-san wa Hakarenai” might have delays as its launch date gets closer, as well, though only time will tell.

Where Can You Watch the Aharen-san wa Hakarenai Anime?

The show will be available on Japanese networks like MBS, BS-TBS, and TBS and available for streaming on Crunchyroll — possibly as a simulcast. However, it’s not yet known if streaming services like Netflix or Hulu will carry “Aharen-san wa Hakarenai.”

It looks like it’ll also be available for streaming on the Chinese platform bilibili.

Who Will Produce the Aharen-san wa Hakarenai Anime?

“Aharen-san wa Hakarenai” is being produced by Felix Film. Felix Film is known for using 3D computer graphics (also known as CGI) to make their anime more immersive. This lets the animation team add effects like shadowing and depth to their projects.

Felix Film has had a hand in creating a few other interesting anime projects, like “A Good Librarian Like a Good Shepherd” and “Nekopara.”

What Is Aharen-san wa Hakarenai About?

The name of the anime means “Aharen Is Indecipherable.” The show centers around the relationship between two high school classmates, Reina Aharen and Raidou Matsuboshi. Raidou has tried to talk to Reina on several occasions, but it doesn’t seem like she ever responds to him. He assumes she doesn’t like him.

One day, though, Reina drops her eraser on the floor and Raidou picks it up for her. He looks up to find Reina standing inches away from his face whispering something indecipherable. He realizes she’s been responding to him all along — he was just never able to hear her. Because of the kind gesture, Rina now believes the two are best friends and follows Raidou wherever he goes. She has no concept of personal space and never stands more than a few inches away from Raidou. She even tries to feed him meatballs from her lunch box.

If you’re looking for heart-pounding action, “Aharen-san wa Hakarenai” likely isn’t the right show for you. The anime is a slice-of-life romantic comedy with a lighthearted tone. If the teaser is any indicator, the show will also likely be fairly slow-paced.

The Aharen-san wa Hakarenai Main Characters

“Aharen-san wa Hakarenai” will center around two main characters, but we could be introduced to more characters as the show progresses. So far, this is who we know will appear:

  • Reina Aharen: Reina is a tiny high school girl who doesn’t understand personal boundaries. She grows incredibly attached to Raidou and never wants to be more than an inch or two away from him. She also has a very quiet voice that’s almost impossible to understand at times. The character is voiced by Inori Minase from “Isekai Quartet Movie: Another World.”

  • Raidou Matsuboshi: Raidou is a tall, laid-back teen with a kind heart and an overactive imagination. He generally wants to look after Reina and help her with her issues. He doesn’t seem too bothered by her over-closeness. The character is voiced by Takuma Terashima from “Log Horizon: Entaku Houkai.”

  • Mitsuki Ooshiro: Mitsuki has been Reina’s friend since junior high school. She’s also a skilled martial artist. She likes to watch over Reina from various hiding spots. The character is voiced by Mao Ichimichi from “Enen no Shouboutai: Ni no Shou.”

  • Ms. Tobaru: Not much is known about the personality of Ms. Tobaru in the anime adaptation. However, the character is voiced by Kana Hanazawa from “Your Name.”
