We recently reported on Dexter’s (Michael C. Hall) emotional developments come season 3, with executive producer Clyde Phillips talking about the dynamism of the main character’s inner turmoil. Now, he talks about the other characters on the show, and how they will create ripples in the water now that Dexter has found a new friend in District Attorney Miguel Prado, played by Jimmy Smits.
In fact, Phillips revealed that aside from being a good friend to Dexter, Jimmy Smit’s character will also be a brotherly figure to him, revealing that “the audience is going to fall for [Miguel Prado], much like Dexter falls for him. He becomes a bit of the older brother that Dexter really wants. Dexter has that hole in his life from killing his brother in the first year.”
Additionally, Phillips says that while Dexter might not be the first to dive into the friendship, he is definitely drawn to Prado. “Dexter isn’t capable of initiating [the friendship]. But he is capable of responding to the overture and responding to the energy that Miguel puts out.”
As for Lauren Velez’ Maria Laguerta, Phillips says that she “is going to change the way she runs the police department. Because of her close relationship with Sgt. Doakes last year, and her disappointment and grief over what happened to him, she’s going to separate herself from the department a little bit. But she’ll find that it’s not the best thing to do, that these people really are her family.”
It seems that Dexter isn’t the only one to gain new friends, as Laguerta will also be bonding with defense attorney Ellen Wolf, played by Anne Ramsay of Mad About You.
Additionally, Desmond Harrington will come into the picture to play new cop Joey Quinn. Phillips says that Quinn “transfers over from narcotics to homicide, because there’s obviously an opening in homicide after the end of last year. He’s got a little bit of a past that’s being investigated by Internal Affairs.”
Dexter returns to Showtime on September 29 at 9pm.
