Grey’s Anatomy did something different with season 13 episode 8, “The Room Where It Happens,” as Meredith, Owen, Richard and Stephanie worked to save a patient in the OR and Richard proposed a game: make the John Doe into someone. Richard recalled his mother’s illness, Owen thought about his sister, Stephanie called upon what she learned while in a hospital bed and Meredith remembered telling her kids that Derek was dead.

Here are the best quotes from “The Room Where It Happens.”

Grey’s Anatomy Recap: Whatever Keeps You Going>>>

“You don’t. You just keep going.”

Stephanie: “How do you know when you’re too tired to operate?”
Owen: “Right about when you make your first mistake.”
Stephanie: “I hate that answer.”
Meredith: “You don’t. You just keep going.”

“What do we need to know in order to do our jobs and not simply be mechanics?”
Richard: “So, we don’t know if this man had a family, we don’t know if he was running away from something, and we don’t know if he was the good guy or the bad guy. We know nothing. What do we need to know in order to do our jobs and not simply be mechanics?”
Owen: “How are we — we’re not being mechanics!”
Richard: “You’re treating this patient like a sack of organs on a table!”

“He likes to teach. When he’s pissed, he really likes to teach.”
Owen: “What is he doing?”
Meredith: “He likes to teach. When he’s pissed, he really likes to teach.”
– When Richard begins his game of making the patient someone instead of John Doe

“Do not stop until you picture this woman on the table, until you can truly see her. Do not stop until we can hear her voice and what she has to say.”
“What is it we like about Gail? And be specific. I mean, do not stop until you picture this woman on the table, until you can truly see her. Do not stop until we can hear her voice and what she has to say.”
– Richard, making the others see John Doe as someone

“Because you also have the Chief of General Surgery in here, Dr. Webber, and I outrank you.”

Richard: “Look, we’ve got three attendings here, and a senior resident. We need to discuss the options.”
Meredith: “No, we don’t.”
Richard: “Why not?”
Meredith: “Because you also have the Chief of General Surgery in here, Dr. Webber, and I outrank you.”

“His beard was good. Yours is just sad.”
“You turned into Dad! … You’ve got his nose and his chin and his unreasonably high expectations of everyone around you that no one could possibly live up to. But not his beard. His beard was good. Yours is just sad.”
– Megan to Owen

“If it’s a race, you’re losing, because you suture like a dumb tortoise.”
Megan: “‘Trauma surgery is fast and a race against time.’ If it’s a race, you’re losing, because you suture like a dumb tortoise.”
Owen: “I like my sutures to hold.”
Megan: “Oh, and your beefy, fat hands slow you down? Do they have to special order those gloves for you?”

“Because you don’t stop, okay? You don’t stop until you’ve got the final answer. You don’t stop until you’ve saved them, or you find out that they’re dead.”

Megan: “Owen, why won’t you call it? I mean, you know where this is headed.”
Owen: “Because you don’t stop, okay? You don’t stop until you’ve got the final answer. You don’t stop until you’ve saved them, or you find out that they’re dead.”
Megan: “Owen. This guy isn’t me.”

“They can’t hear you. If you want them to listen, like, really listen, you gotta be louder.”
– young Stephanie offering herself advice

“If I were on the table, I’d want the risky thing. I’d want to survive.”
“Before you argue about how risky it is, let me just say we have very little time, and you should listen to me, because I know all about this stuff. If I were on the table, I’d want the risky thing. I’d want to survive.”
– Stephanie, arguing for her recommendation to treat their patient

“Then you and Webber should be all over it.”
Owen: “This is a reach.”
Meredith: “Then you and Webber should be all over it.”

“What do you think I’m doing right now, massaging this heart for exercise?”
Richard: “Ever since I walked into this OR, you’ve been negative at every step, shooting down every approach.”
Meredith: “What do you think I’m doing right now, massaging this heart for exercise?”

“You come up with what you need to. Whatever helps.”
Meredith: “You didn’t make Gail up.”
Richard: “You come up with what you need to. Whatever helps. An old patient.”
Meredith: “‘Someone good.'”

“You make up someone, someone good. Whatever you need to keep you going.”

“Your body hurts, your brain becomes foggy, and you feel like you’re trapped in a tunnel, when all you want is your bed. So, how do you keep going? How do you not just sit down and give up? Sometimes it’s easy. Sometimes you play games in your head. You make up someone, someone good. Whatever you need to keep you going.”
– Meredith’s closing voiceover

If it’s on TV — especially if it’s a procedural or superhero show — chances are Meredith watches it. She has a love for all things fiction, starting from a young age with ER and The X-Files on the small screen and the Nancy Drew books. Arrow kicked off the Arrowverse and her true passion for all things heroes. She’s enjoyed getting into the minds of serial killers since Criminal Minds, so it should be no surprise that her latest obsession is Prodigal Son.
