Veteran actor Alan Cumming recently revealed just how secretive and surreal his experience was while filming Marvel’s upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Speaking in a Gold Derby interview, he quipped, “I did the entire film in isolation… Lots of green screen, face replacement. They even gave characters fake names. I don’t know who I was acting with half the time.” The extreme secrecy meant Cumming often had no idea who he was actually performing opposite.
Revisiting Nightcrawler Was “Really Healing”
But despite the unconventional shooting setup, Cumming described reprising his role as Nightcrawler as emotionally rewarding. Speaking to People, he said the experience was “really healing” compared to his “terrible” time filming X2 in 2003—a shoot he’s previously characterized as “miserable” and difficult due to long makeup sessions and on-set tensions.
From Five-Hour Makeup to Streamlined Process
Cumming’s return to the blue-skinned, tattooed Nightcrawler was made even more satisfying by technical improvements. While his transformation in X2 required nearly five hours in the makeup chair, the new production cut that down to just 90 minutes, allowing him to focus more on performance and less on prep.
Marvel Secrecy Meets Emotional Redemption
The contrast couldn’t be more striking: a shoot that was isolated, high-tech, and almost disorienting, paired with an emotional arc that offered redemption and satisfaction for Cumming’s return to a beloved character. Whether Nightcrawler’s comeback will be a standout among fans remains to be seen—but for Cumming, the experience appears to be both cathartic and creatively inspiring.
