Biography

Actor John Pyper-Ferguson was born on February 27, 1964 in Melbourne, Australia. Raised in Canada, most of his acting roles are in Canadian and American projects. He made his television debut in 1986, when he appeared in the Canadian drama series Hamilton’s Quest. This was followed by a role in the television movie American Harvest, which aired the following year. Also in 1987, he made his film debut, playing a minor role in the slasher thriller Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II.

After numerous guest roles on television—with appearances in shows such as 21 Jump Street, Star Trek: The Next Generation, MacGyver and Lightning Force—Pyper-Ferguson got a recurring role in the modern Western series The Adventures of brisco County, Jr. He played comic foil Pete Hutter, a mean but unfortunate gunslinger who “dies” in the first episode but returns several times in the series. The show ran for one season before being cancelled. Throughout the 1990s, he appeared in numerous films—Space Marines, At the Hands of Another, I’ll Take You There, McHale’s Navy—and also had notable television guest roles, including a two-episode story arc in The X Files.

The same trend happened in the following decade: he had recurring roles in Jeremiah, Night Stalker, Jack & Jill, Battlestar Galactica and the short-lived The Huntress. He also had a variety of roles in several major film releases, including Pearl Harbor and X-Men: The Last Stand. In 2006, he took a regular role in the drama series Brothers & Sisters, where he played stay-at-home guitar instructor Joe Whedon. Later he appeared in Cane, The L Word, Caprica, Alphas, Once Upon a Time, Deception and Burn Notice. At present, he is part of the cast of the TNT series The Last Ship.
