To Weeds or not to Weeds – was that ever a dilemma for Mary-Louise Parker when she was offered the starring role in the critically acclaimed Showtime series?  As a mother, was it ever a point of argument for the 43-year old actress to essay the role of a dope-dealing suburban mom?  Ironically, Weeds was exactly the financial medicine Parker needed when the show came along just as she began raising her son as a single parent. When Mary-Louise Parker and her longtime boyfriend, actor Billy Crudup, called it quits back in 2003, Parker was seven months heavy with their son, William Atticus, who was born in January the following year.  Gainful employment that wouldn‘t take her away from her young child became a priority for the actress, who found precisely what she was looking for when the script for Weeds fell into her lap. Read more »

It looks like the strike is petering out.  If this is how the thing has to end (with a smattering of interim agreements from the different independent movie houses), then so be it.  At least some studios have come to their senses.  Just this weekend, Lions Gate and the WGA reached an interim agreement that allows their under-contract writers to return to work.  While Lions Gate is mostly known for their films, they also produce Weeds and Mad Men, two of the most highly touted cable shows currently running.  This means that, this week, Mad Men writers are returning to work on season 2 and the Weeds scribes are coming back to work on their fourth season.  Read more »

Showtime has officially entered Mary-Kate Olsen in the Emmy race for best guest actress in the dark comedy series Weeds for her role as Tara Lindman.  This potentially puts her against Lindsay Lohan, who is set to play an old schoolmate of America Ferrera‘s character Betty Suarez on Ugly Betty‘s May 22 season ender, and Britney Spears, who guest starred as a receptionist on the sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Submitting an Emmy entry costs several hundred dollars, which means Showtime is quite serious about backing up Olsen in the race.  There is no word yet on whether CBS is officially entering the Britney Spears episodes or whether ABC will put up cash on Lindsay, though many speculations have already been circulating. Read more »

Some critics were skeptical about the big move that the harshly addictive Showtime series Weeds proffered on its fourth season.  From the comforts of suburbia, the people behind this hit dramedy decided to move Nancy Botwin, played by Mary Louise Parker, and her drug-dealing ways to somewhere perhaps more liberated – a California beach town near the Baja border. If unofficial tenets of shows are to be believed, changing the setting is a big no-no, as viewers not only get attached to the characters, they also get comfortably attached to places.  But if Weeds is about anything, it‘s about breaking conventions.  And Weeds series creator Jenji Kohan sees something positive on the change; an abundance of new opportunities for Nancy and the other cast members.  (Besides, lately, there‘ve been a deluge of suburbia-based shows, such as Breaking Bad, Big Love, and Swingtown.) Read more »
