Articles for Ugly Betty Season 1

Fall 2006 New Shows Rank: #19Gist of the Show:An unfashionable (read: ugly) woman is employed at a chic fashion agency. Ugly Betty is your typical “fish out of waterâ€? story. Cast Member Looking To Reclaim Former Glory:Formerly dethroned Miss America Vanessa Williams, whose career‘s been going downhill ever since she married mediocre NBA small forward Rick Fox.Similar in Theme to: "The Devil Wears Prada", the Meryl Streep movie with exactly the same plot, but with Anne Hathaway in the Ugly Betty role.Time Slot Competition:Survivor, My Name is Earl, Smallville. Ouch.Likelihood of Second Season:85%Final Word:Ugly Betty has gotten some real good buzz, receiving almost universal (if not mild) critical praise. I have not seen the show, but I never like it when actresses are purposely made “uglyâ€?, like Charlize Theron in “Monsterâ€? or Jennifer Aniston in “The Good Girlâ€?. It just rubs me the wrong way. -Oscar Dahl Read more »
Ugly Betty premiered and proved fairly stiff competition for Survivor, scoring a 4.9 ratings share to Survivor‘s 5.8. Grey‘s Anatomy beat CSI again, which makes feel warm and fuzzy inside. My Name is Earl is still trending downward and, for the second week in a row, The Office has improved on Earl‘s ratings in the second half of the nine o‘clock hour. ER is still holding steady, leading the ten o‘clock hour in front of ABC‘s new and boring Six Degrees. -Oscar Dahl, BuddyTV Senior Writer Read more »
The glamorous ex-Stamos (with a hyphen) Rebecca Romijn is joining the permanent cast ABC‘s surprise hit Ugly Betty. It‘s kind of surprising they found room for her in a show that is already bloated with regulars, but no doubt Ms. Romjin will shine just nicely.  Read more »
Yesterday, The Writers Guild of America announced its nominees for their annual end of the year awards. This is the season for awards and, while largely inconsequential, I‘m a sucker for all of it. I love awards, I love nominations. I like to intelligently discuss (read: argue incoherently) the nominations with my friends and foes. Whose deserving? Who got the shaft? All good topics. The Writers Guild are, obviously, concerned with the written aspects of television, so it‘s right up my alley. I‘m generally in agreement with the group‘s nominees this year, although I have a couple of minor nitpicks. The nominees are... Read more »
ABC hour-long Ugly Betty has become the first new comedy of the Fall to get picked up for an entire season. Brought to America by Salma Hayek and based on the popular Colombian telenovela, Ugly Betty has earned rave reviews from critics and garnered a large viewer base.  Read more »
Civil Rights groups recently announced their findings on television diversity and the verdict is, well, muddled. Things are getting better, but still not good enough. Two ABC shows, Grey‘s Anatomy and Ugly Betty, received the highest marks, but every network has a long way to go. You can read the full AP story here. This will always be a difficult issue for television, and something that I have mixed feelings about. Obviously, I‘m all for diversity on TV. There needs to be more and there have been some egregious examples in the past of popular shows that contained almost zero diversity over their life spans. Read more »
The Golden Globes aired last night and, unfortunately, it was on at the same time as 24. In case you weren‘t already aware, 24 and Jack Bauer will always take precedent over an awards show. And I like awards shows. The show went on, however, and some surprising results trickled in. Not all of which I agree with, but interesting nonetheless. The Golden Globes go the somewhat mystifying route of including miniseries and TV movies in the Supporting Actor/Actress categories. This means that last night, Jeremy Piven (who deserved to win) lost the Supporting Actor award to Jeremy Irons, who starred in a period piece. Having Entourage go up against Elizabeth I in any category just seems silly. Anyway, here are the big winners. Read more »
Eric Mabius has come a long way from being an underground favorite to a much awaited actor in the limelight. Backed up with a chiseled façade, massive charisma and dreamy gaze, he can possibly melt anyone‘s heart. One of People Magazine‘s "Sexiest Men Alive" in 2006, he certainly proves that he is worthy of being labeled as the "Sexiest TV Editor-In-Chief" in the show Ugly Betty. Read more »

I‘m not sure why they keep tacking on "musical" to this comedy category. Has there ever been a musical series on TV, every episode full of song and dance? Is Barney the Talking Dinosaur considered for this category? I‘m not opposed to prime time musical series, but writing songs is hard. I just don‘t see twenty-two episodes working logistically. The five comedies nominated in this category each come with their own merits. I don‘t agree with all the nominees; there is one whose nod actually makes me visibly angry. In fact, I‘m repeatedly punching a metal wall right now. Broken hand aside, I‘m actually pretty pleased with the nominees for two reasons I‘ll get into in a moment. First, check out the nominees after the jump.  Read more »
The nominees for the Screen Actors Guild awards were announced today and, as always, prove to be a nice barometer of who really deserves these end-of-the-year acting nominations. Since SAG is comprised of actors, there is no group more qualified to dole out acting awards than them. Therefore, I trusts these awards and nominations more than any other acting nominations. This is not to say I don‘t disagree with some of their choices. I do. My biggest qualms actually come from their film nominees, but we won‘t get into to that. The nominations in each TV category are after the jump, with commentary.  Read more »
Ina Treciokas, publicist of Ugly Betty’s Salma Hayek, verified on March 9, 2007 that Hayek is expecting her first child with boyfriend Francois-Henri Pinault. At the moment, there are no reports about the wedding plans or when the baby is due. Previously, the Mexican actress dated actor Edward Norton in 1999 to 2003, and Joshua Lucas from 2003 to 2004. Now, she is engaged with Pinault, a 44-year old French businessman and father of two, who currently ranks as the 74th richest person in the world. Pinault is the CEO of Pinault-Printemps-Redoute, a corporation that owns fashion brands like Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci and Stella McCartney. And although the couple has high profile names, Hayek being a popular celebrity, and Pinault being a fashion mogul, they both maintain a low profile relationship. Read more »

Ecstatic about the forthcoming celebration, Ortiz expresses her sentiments to People. "I‘m really thrilled and my cheeks are hurting from smiling," Ortiz said. "He‘s a California boy so it‘s a nice balance for my crazy New Yorker." And since Ortiz is busy with her work on the drama-comedy Ugly Betty, her father, Angel L. America Ferrera, lead actress on the comedy drama Ugly Betty, remains to be contented with herself. Despite her noticeable weight loss, she asserts that she will never be a slave of the eating disorder that has become a Hollywood trend. The Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award winner is set to grace the cover of W magazine’s May issue. In an interview with the magazine, she said, "There are times when I go to the gym and really try, and there are times when I just don‘t…I gain a pound. I lose a pound. But I think I‘ve developed a really good sense of when I‘m doing something for myself as opposed to when I‘m doing something because of other people‘s expectations of me. And honestly, even if I wanted to be anorexic, I just don‘t have what it takes. After four hours of being anorexic, I‘d be like, ‘It‘s been four whole hours! Feed me!‘ " Read more »
Taye Diggs’ value to ABC was definitely not diminished by the ugly flop of Day Break earlier this season.  The time looping mystery, which stood in for LOST while it was on hiatus number two, failed to resonate with LOST fans and Day Break was quickly pulled from the air, despite Diggs’ noteworthy portrayal of the lead.  While that must have been a disappointment for Diggs, and the Network, his talent prevailed and the ousted actor found himself with his choice of top ABC shows. Read more »

Ashley Jensen, cast member on the drama-comedy Ugly Betty, was mistaken for a prostitute in Los Angeles, California, just because she opted to take a hike instead of driving her car.According to Jensen, she was used to getting around just by walking, having lived in Scotland and London prior to moving to the Unites States to star in Ugly Betty. She said, “I‘m used to walking everywhere but you just can‘t do that in LA - everyone drives. "On one occasion when I did stride out, a guy in a Porsche pulled up. Many celebrities have been accustomed to the practice of insuring body parts, some to hedge against risks while others engage in insurance for promotional gimmick. The list of celebrities goes way back to Liberace’s hands, Marlene Dietrich’s legs, to Keith Richard’s fingers and Dolly Parton’s breasts just to name a few. Most recently, another actress has joined the bandwagon and she comes in the form of America Ferrera, lead actress on the ABC dramedy Ugly Betty.According to BBC, Lloyd’s, the British insurance firm, has insured the Ugly Betty star’ smile for a whopping $10 million.
