After her Emmy-winning stint on long-runner medical series ER, Juliana Margulies, who played Nurse Carol Hathaway on the NBC show for six seasons, is set to star in a new legal series. The CBS legal drama The Good Wife follows a politicians wife (Margulies) who starts to carve out her own niche as a defense lawyer. Wife and mother Alicia Florrick is forced to assume full responsibility for her family and re-enter the workforce after her husbands very public sex and political corruption scandal sends him to jail. Joining Margulies is Chris Noth, who plays her beleaguered husband.As a junior associate at a prestigious Chicago law firm, Florrick joins her longtime friend, former law school classmate and firm partner Will Gardner, played by Josh Charles, who is very keen on finding out if his old buddy can still swing it on the court room after her 13-year hiatus. For her part, Florrick is happy that the firms top litigator Diane Lockhart, played by Christine Baranski, is willing to mentor her, but her gratefulness is snuffed out when she discovers that the help has some conditions and that she has to succeed on her own merit.

Today CBS announced when its fall shows will premiere, and many of thedates are easy to remember because CBS is essentially launching all ofits shows in a single week. From Monday, September 21 to Sunday,September 27, CBS will premiere all but two of its shows.Those exceptions include the newest season of Survivor, which premieresone week early to allow a two-hour premiere on Thursday. September 17,and the series premiere of Three Rivers starring Moonlights AlexOLoughlin which comes Sunday, October 4, one week late to allow TheAmazing Race to have a two-hour premiere.

Tomorrow morning the Hollywood Foreign Press Association will revealthis years Golden Globe nominees, and you never know what to expect. The Golden Globes have been a lot more diverse than the Emmys,nominating people like Evangeline Lilly for Lost, Anna Paquin for True Blood, Lauren Graham for Gilmore Girls and Sarah Michelle Gellar for Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Just two days after the Golden Globe nominations, the Screen ActorsGuild nominations were this morning, and the TV results are a mixedbag. The awards are a bit less experimental than the Globes,nominating old favorites like Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Charlie Sheen,but they also have a little bit of new mixed in as well. In a not-so-surprising move, CBS has announced that it has renewed procedural and NCIS spin-off NCIS: Los Angeles and legal drama The Good Wife for sophomore seasons. Both rookie shows, which premiered in the fall, have produced not-so-shoddy ratings during their run, so the early renewal was quite expected."Two great new series, fronted by talented stars on one big night of television," Nina Tassler, president of CBS Entertainment, said in a statement. "Were proud of these shows and what theyve accomplished on Tuesday night."

Carrie Preston, who plays Arlene Fowler on HBOs True Blood, has been cast on CBS The Good Wife for a multiple episode arc, according to Entertainment Weeklys Michael Ausiello. One of the secrets behind the success of The Good Wife is the chemistry between the characters, or more likely the characters themselves. Even though The Good Wife hasnt finished its premiere season, watching previously aired episodes still has probative value. Last nights "Painkiller," first shown in January, is a case in point. Certain scenes become "ah ha" moments that take on more meaning in light of whats to come. This episode, about the overdose death of a popular high school football star, follows that M.O. throughout. And For the RecordAs is typical of many Good Wife episodes, the actual legal issues in "Painkiller" are in many ways less important than what we learn about continuing characters. In particular, much of the action revolves around people not being what they seem at first--and not just the pill-popping mom of the dead boy.

For most shows, the reveal at the end of last weeks episode--Alicia bested Cary to get the associates job--would have been the season finale. But not on The Good Wife, which continues to examine the fallout from the decision. Everyone is telling Alicia shes a good lawyer, but she has to decide for herself if shes still a good woman.The mysterious name of this weeks episode, "Hybristophilia," describes a condition where someone (usually a woman) has the irresistible urge to be with a dangerous man. As with all the shows titles, the meaning carries weight beyond the show. For Alicia, whether that "dangerous man" is Peter or Will remains to be seen.

The Good Wife closes out a mostly stellar premier season with a mediocre legal case, but with plenty of good stuff about the main players. The title, "Running," at first refers to a cop trying to cut a deal to enter witness protection. But it soon takes on an entirely different meaning as Peter mulls a decision about whether to try regaining his former job as states attorney. Besides the Alicia-Peter story, we also learn that Will is still seeing that law student who caused him so much trouble a few weeks back--and shes incredibly rich. (Based on the episodes end, though, I dont see Will becoming incredibly rich anytime soon.) And Diane is still involved with Kurt, the ballistics expert. But unlike Will and Ms. Richy-Rich, their oil-and-water romance continues to hold promise.
