John Kubicek ranked The Closer 7th. He says...
I can explain why The Closer is one of the best shows on TV: Kyra Sedgwick. Television is full of procedural cop dramas in which the police solve the case by the end of every, but what makes TNT's The Closer the best of breed is Sedgwick's funny, serious, brilliant performance as Brenda Lee Johnson, an Atlanta woman who finds herself heading up Priority Homicide in te LAPD.

Kyra Sedgwick, star of drama series The Closer, has earned yet another Emmy nomination for her acclaimed crime drama series. Interestingly, she had to learn about her nomination in front of an audience when she, along with actor Jon Cryer, announced the nominees for the upcoming 59th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards yesterday, July 19, at the Academy's Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre.
"It was kind of nauseating. Beforehand I thought this is torturous why did I decide to do this? But it was also very exciting," Sedgwick described the experience after learning her nomination for the category of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

Actress Kyra Sedgwick has been working in the entertainment industry for over twenty years, and her award-winning portrayal of Brenda Leigh Johnson in The Closer has helped her popularity reach greater heights. However, the 41-year-old actress claims that when she decided to pursue an acting career, getting famous was the least of her concerns. All she really wanted to do was express herself to the fullest extent.
"When you're an artist and you don't get to do your art, it's very frustrating. And very painful,” Sedgwick told the Los Angeles Times. “I feel really good that I can exercise this need and want to act that I have.”

The third season of the cable series, The Closer, premiered with big numbers Monday night, bringing in an estimated 8.8 million viewers. The show’s previous season premiered with a record-setting 8.28 million people, which means that not only did the third season premiere beat its previous opening figure, it also broke the ratings record for basic cable television.
However, these records only apply to cable series that are supported by advertisements. Consequently, highly-followed shows such as the recently concluded Sopranos, which drew in more than 13 million viewers some years ago, and HBO and ESPN’s Monday Night Football, which brought in 10 million viewers regularly last season, have not posed a threat to the ratings success of The Closer.

The hit drama series, The Closer, is adding another name to its cast list.
Actor Barry Corbin, made popular by his portrayal of Maurice Minnifield on Northern Exposure, has been cast in the role of Clay Johnson, father of the unmerciful and serious Brenda Leigh Johnson, played by Kyra Sedgwick. Corbin’s character is “a retired military officer who owns auto-parts stores in the metro Atlanta area.”
