Articles for The Biggest Loser Season 7

The Biggest Loser season 7 starts off with a bang. Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels are trading off telling us how important it is that America‘s obesity problem gets addressed. Evidently 300,000 people die from obesity every year. The musical swells; Bob and Jillian tell us how we can make a change. Good thing I wasn‘t eating ice cream while watching this. That would be almost as bad as the time I was eating McDonald‘s while watching Super Size Me. Not important. The season 5 preview begins. This season, we have the oldest couple to ever appear, the biggest woman, the youngest man, and the unhealthiest group of people to date. Former models, a recovering alcoholic, an engaged couple and finally, the largest contestant thus far, 19 year-old Daniel. All 11 couples are gathered in a hotel in Hollywood, when Alison Sweeney comes in to tell them they‘ve all made it onto The Biggest Loser. The first couple to be introduced is the best friend pairing of Joelle, 41, and Carla, 36, whose slogan is “we‘re not out to destroy you, just to eliminate you.” Next we have Sione, 29, and Filipe, 27, who are cousins from the island of Tonga. The orange team is comprised of best friends David, 23, and Daniel, 19, who is the largest contestant in Biggest Loser history. The white team, otherwise known as the oldest team to date, consists of Estella, 63, and Jerry, 63. Dane and Blaine, both 28, are cousins and both fathers of three. Shannon, 29, and her mother Helen, 48 are representing pink this year. Ron, 54, and the youngest player Mike, 18 are on the brown team. Read more »
On-screen, the contestants of The Biggest Loser struggle with losing weight, partly because of the prizes at stake, but mostly because of the improvements it will bring to their lives, regardless of victory.  Off-screen, their struggles primarily remain the same—and then some.  One of these stories are unfolding right now.One of the contestants of the current season of The Biggest Loser: Couples was charged with domestic violence after allegedy threw a bag of flour on a tenant‘s face.  30-year-old Shanon Thomas—one-half of mother-daughter team Helen and Shanon—was tagged in hurting Michael Nolden, 32, who rents an apartment in the basement of her home in Center Line, Michigan. Read more »
People are still shocked by the surprise eliminations last week. Brooklyn, NY, we visit our first at home contestant from the red team, Nicole. Detroit, Michigan, is home to Shannon of the pink team. In Miami, Florida, we find Laura of the green team. They explain to their families why they’re home so early. Aubrey (yellow), Sione (blue), and Carla (siiver) are also at home for their teammates. They all meet their new trainers and obviously, experience challenges with food. Back at The Biggest Loser ranch, Allison Sweeny meets everyone by the gate to introduce them to temptation. She offers them a “piece” of the $250,000 prize meaning $5,000. Then $10,000. Then finally, $25,000.  Joelle of the silver team struggles with the decision but eventually decides against it. The rest of the ranch now doubts Joelle’s commitment. Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels meet what’s left of their teams after the first week’s elimination. They impress upon them the importance of following through on the ranch for their partners back at home. Read more »
We‘ve been seeing the very pregnant The Biggest Loser host Alison Sweeney on so many places on the screen, from episodes of her reality show to her many other appearances.  I still remember when she showed up on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and it seemed like she could go into labor any minute—I don‘t know if it was a joke, but if I remember correctly, there was a clip when she was doing her breathing in between breaks.  Obviously nothing happened right there. But, finally, the journey is over, and Sweeney has given birth to her second child with husband Dave Sanov.  At twelve minutes before midnight last Monday, she gave birth to a baby girl, which she named Megan Hope.  Weighing in at 6 pounds, 7 ounces, the baby is doing well, according to the actress‘ representative.  “Both mommy and baby—and daddy, too—are doing well,” said Carrie Simons.  “It was a very easy delivery, and everybody is great.” Read more »
Could Ron Morelli lose it?  And by that, I don‘t just mean his weight—he‘s lost almost 40 pounds already, after only two weeks on the latest installment of The Biggest Loser: Couples.  But his personal success on the show might come with a price: his seat in the city council he is part of.Viewers of Loser will know that Ron, one half of father-and-son team Ron and Mike, is a very active member of his community.  Whilst being a retired food distributor, he‘s remained active in civic concerns, being a member of the planning committee of his hometown, South Lyon in Michigan, apart from his city council duties.  But his time on the Loser ranch might cost him that city council seat. Read more »
The contestants are still upset from last week‘s elimination challenge when they had to send Jerry home, but it‘s time to move on and push forward. And they get right into it...Temptation Challenge. The team who eats the most calories wins. The winning team gets to go home for a couple days and train alone with the trainer. Joelle seems to take a lot of food. Some of the others struggle with even taking one piece. Alison Sweeny announces what each team ate. 380 calories for Mandi for a slice of pizza. Aubrey, her teammate on the Yellow, ate nothing! Filipe also ate nothing and his teammate Sione ate two pieces of pizza and a taco for 960 calories. Kristin from purple also ate nothing and Cathy followed suit by eating nothing. Damien and Nicole from the red team both ate nothing. Helen and Shannon, pink, ate nothing. Tara and Laura didn‘t eat anything. Black and Brown ate nothing. Joelle ate nothing but Carla ate slices of pizza, chicken nuggets and cupcakes for a total of 2710 calories. Everyone gets angry with Joelle for celebrating in front of Mandi who wanted to go home and see her kids.Joelle admits she feels like an outsider. In one of the funniest moments of the episode, she says repeatedly “I‘ve tried to be engaging” which just makes me laugh out loud. She‘s so off-putting as she says it and looks at the camera. Read more »
When news that Ron Morelli—one half of father and son pair Ron and Mike, on the latest run of The Biggest Loser: Couples—was in danger of losing his seat in the city council of South Lyons, Michigan, the reaction was a slight surprise.  If you may recall, he was missing council meetings since he‘s shooting the show, and the city‘s charter state that a member can be pegged for removal if he missed three consecutive meetings, or four meetings in a year, without being excused. You were straightforward in your responses: why should politics interfere with one‘s health?  And then you can throw in an expletive.  But there‘s no reason to worry now, though.  The council voted, 3-2, to excuse Morelli‘s absences while he is away shooting Loser.  So far, he‘s missed seven meetings; five of them have been excused, since they‘ve been discussing the matter every meeting.  This vote finally enables Morelli to keep his seat, at least throughout his run on the show. Read more »
It‘s the last week on The Biggest Loser ranchbefore the couples can bring back their contestants from home. David doesn‘t seem to be trying as hard for Daniel, who is working really hard at the ranch. Bob Harper is extremely surprised to see Joelle in the workout room. Kristen and Helen talk to Bob outside about how disappointed and disillusioned they are that Joelle is still there. He reminds them who their real teammates are: the people back at home. Bob tells everyone to encourage Joelle and he does the same. She seems to be pushing herself a bit harder this week. This week‘s temptation challenge is a tailgate party because it‘s Super Bowl week. Alison Sweeney informs Blaine that he gets to go home to see his wife have their baby, which is awesome. His weigh in will still count for the week. Curtis Stone is the guest chef for the week. They will be tested on their knowledge of their favorite superbowl snacks. Read more »
The couples are back on the ranch. Laura, Shannon, Sione, Cathy, Carla, and Aubrey are back with their teammates. We‘ll finally get to see exactly how much they lost at home. Bob warns his team that the competition is getting tough. Jillian blames Daniel and David‘s elimination on Bob because he always encourages his team to never vote off any other members of his team. Aubrey is already crying because she‘s so concerned she didn‘t do enough. Jillian tells her to calm down because it‘ll all show up at the weigh in.It‘s a big one because the winner of this weigh in will win immunity for their team this week. Read more »
Last week, we saw The Biggest Loser partners return to the ranch. The bottom two teams were Joelle and Carla and Mike and Ron. Due to Joelle‘s poor attitude, Carla and Joelle were sent home.Ron and Mike discuss the fact that they fell below the yellow line for the second week in a row. Neither can figure out why they aren‘t losing the weight they should. They reveal that they want to be there for Max, Mike‘s brother, who‘s also overweight and only 16 years old. Alison Sweeny visits the house to reveal the first ever “Pop Challenge.” Each player is going to stand on a block on one foot for as long as possible. The winner will receive a 24-hour visit from a loved one. Ron is the first one out at 9 seconds and Mike follows at 20 seconds. Kristen falls at 35 seconds. At 2:21, Dane is out. Tara falls into the pool. Kathy falls. Helen and Shannon get out at the same time. Laura and Sione fall just after 5 minutes. Mandi pleads Filipe to let her see her husband and he purposefully gives up for her. This shakes Blaine at ten minutes. She starts to plead to Blaine. Blaine asks Aubrey if she‘ll give up for Mandi and she says, “Of course.” Aubrey and Blaine give up for Mandi. Blaine was just home a couple weeks ago to see his baby being born. Mandi rejoices and hugs the rest of the cast, thanking them for their sacrifice. Read more »
Have you been watching The Biggest Loser for the longest time and want to be just like them?  Do you want to get results like them and have your life changed forever, for yourself and your loved ones?  Do you want me to stop sounding like an announcer on those informercials?  Okay, okay, I know I don‘t like that, too, but let‘s get to the point, then—if you want to be on the show, this could be your chance.NBC has announced a nationwide audition tour for the eighth season of The Biggest Loser, with stops in 14 cities across the United States.  It‘s unclear what the format of this season, which will air this fall, will be, because the network is asking for both individual contestants and teams to try out.  As always, you have to be at least 18 years old, and be a resident of this country, to join. Read more »
Last week on The Biggest Loser, Blaine was the first single player to be eliminated. Dane, on the Black team, is now the only one who doesn‘t have a partner. The cast takes a walk to the gym together and they run into Alison Sweeny. She informs them they‘re experiencing a pop challenge. They‘ll be competing for the keys to the gym. There are only two keys. If they don‘t get a key, they won‘t have access to the gym. They must hike up a hill where they‘ll find 130 keys. Each team member has to pick one key and then go back down the hill to test it in one of the two locks.Everyone hits the hill running except Ron, who can‘t on his two bad knees. Tara makes it to the board first and grabs a random key. Helen, Sione, and Mandi follow and all four of their keys don‘t work. Ron‘s having an extremely difficult time but each of the other cast members stop to make sure he‘s okay. Twenty minutes have passed and no one‘s found a working key. Tara starts throwing up after her seventh key but keeps going. Read more »

Last week on The Biggest Loser, Shanon from the Pink team elected to go home to keep her mom, Helen on the ranch. Whether or not her sacrifice will pay off is yet to be seen.Helen‘s already questioning her decision but she knows that she‘ll have to push through in order to make Shanon‘s sacrifice worth it.At the Pop Challenge, the contestants walk up to find Alison Sweny standing in between two boards with black shirts and blue shirts on them. She informs them that they‘ll be split into black and blue teams. The winner of the pop challenge gets to keep their trainer. The last place team will automatically be split up. The challenge is a standard football drill. The player must lay down and then jump back up to touch the chip. The catch is that it‘ll all be done in the mud. Dane, Mandi, Helen, Sione, Tara, and Kristen compete. The first to 100 up downs wins. It‘s a clear race between Tara and Sione. Tara just barely wins by one hit. Sione gets up after a while and comes in second place. Followed by Mandi, Dane, Mike, Kristen and then Helen. Read more »
Last night on The Biggest Loser, the teams were completely shaken up. Most players had to trade trainers in order to split into the black team and the blue team. Tonight‘s weigh-in will show us who benefited from the changes. For their challenge, they‘ll be tested by the editor of Prevention magazine. The first team to get three correct answers wins. One player from each team steps forward. Mandi and Helen are up first. They both get it right. Cathy and Sione are up next and Sione gets another point for his team. Dane and Filipe square off and Filipe ends up winning it for his team. The black team wins! Each member wins a wellness vacation package for two. Read more »
Let‘s go back to the latest episode of The Biggest Loser: Couples.  Dane was eliminated, right?  Since his elimination, or at least as the program showed, he has run a marathon with his wife, doing the entire 26-mile distance in three hours and 53 minutes.Seems like the perfect ending.  Catch is, it isn‘t.Some viewers were alert enough to notice that even the most experienced marathon runners won‘t be able to do the whole distance in that short a time.  What more for someone like Dane, who—let‘s admit it—despite having been on Loser, isn‘t as physically fit as most runners?  As it turns out, the entire thing was a fake: Dane did not finish the marathon.  Or, to be more exact, Dane did not run the whole distance. Read more »
This week on The Biggest Loser, 11 players are left in the game after last week‘s shocking elimination after the Blue Team sent their second biggest loser Dane home. So far, the contestants on the ranch have lost half a ton of weight. When the blue team comes back without Dane, Mike is overjoyed because he‘s a huge threat to both him and his dad. Tara feels the opposite because she feels like she has no one left to lean on. Awkward. Mandi deduces that Cathy, Kristin and Ron will bond together and go after her and Aubrey first. The contestants go to Chef‘s Inc to meet Rocco DiSpirito to learn about the dangers of fast food. The challenge is to make the best tasting, low calorie, low fat pizza, burger, and taco. The contestants have thirty minutes to make the pizza. The winning team wins a dinner with Rocco and one player will be randomly selected to receive an extra vote in the elimination this week. The winning pizza was made by Ron from the blue team. The winning burrito was made by Sione on the black team. The winning burger was made by Helen and Laura of the black team. Each member of the black team picks a fortune cookie and Laura gets the cookie that has the extra vote Read more »
The Biggest Loser picks up right where it left off. Alison Sweeny has told the contestants that if they can lose a total of 77 pounds (7 pounds per person per day) then no one will be eliminated from either team. Mike is the only person who hasn‘t weighted in and he has to lose more than 9 pounds. And he does! He loses 11 pounds! Here are the results of the weigh in:Black Team:Tara, -11 pounds, 5.21%Helen, -5 pounds, 2.52%Sione, -3 pounds, 1.04%Laura, -7 pounds, 3.00%Filipe, -8 pounds, 2.82%Mike, -11 pounds, 3.70%Blue Team:Cathy, -3 pounds, 1.20%Kristin, -9 pounds, 3.23%Mandi, -8 pounds, 3.94%Aubrey, -8 pounds, 3.79%Ron, -6 pounds, 1.72%79 pounds lost total! Read more »
Last week on The Biggest Loser, Mandi sacrificed herself for Aubrey. Tonight‘s episode picks up right where we left off, in the elimination room. Alison Sweeney announces that she‘s asked the Black Team to join them all . We‘re told to expect the unexpected. Mandi is not the only one going home tonight. All of them are going home for the week and they‘re to come back for the next weigh-in. Filipe and Sione are stoked to see their families. Alison warns that their families and friends will be a distraction and they will be entering a world of temptation. The Black team didn‘t do well with temptation so this will be hard for them. Maybe their lessons with the reward challenge will give them the heads up on their home stays. We join Aubrey first in Boise, Idaho. Then Laura in Miami, Florida. Tara‘s greeted by a huge group in Long Island, New York. Filipe and Sione goes back to Phoenix, Arizona. Helen‘s greeted by her family in Minnesota. Mike and Ron go home to Detroit, Michigan. Green Bay, Wisconson is where we see Cathy and Kristin. Read more »
Last night on The Biggest Loser, the contestants were shocked to learn that the Pink team, which consisted of mother and daughter duo Helen and Shanon, had fallen below the line. All the other teams were locked out of the gym during the week except for the Pink and Brown teams. What was more shocking was the request Shanon and Helen made of the rest of the cast. They pleaded that the cast send Shanon home instead of Helen. Shanon, who was arguably the bigger threat, got her wish and eliminated in a unanimous decision.I was able to chat with Shanon earlier today and get the update on her life. We talked about her experiences at home and her dream to become a roller derby girl. Read more »
Last week, the nation was shocked to see one of the strongest teams on The Biggest Loser fall below the yellow line. After weeks and weeks of shedding double-digit pounds, the Black Team hit their plateau and wound up in last place. The teams were then told they‘d have to vote of one of the two members of the Black Team; either Dane or Blaine.Due to his requests, the cast eliminated Blaine from The Biggest Loser ranch. His wife had just had a baby and he wanted to be home with his family. I was able to chat with Blaine about his Biggest Loser experiences and his life after the ranch. He gives us the low-down on the much-debated Joelle/Damian elimination and his hopes for the outcome of the show. Read more »
This season on This Biggest Loser: Couples, everyone was shocked when in the first episode, Alison Sweeney announced that nine people were going home. The teams would have to decide which player would be sent home for thirty days as their partner tried to bring them back to the ranch. On the sliver team of Joelle and Carla, Carla was sent home.Last night, the contestants were finally brought back to the ranch after their thirty day effort to lose weight at home. Carla managed to lose 20 pounds in thirty days. Unfortunately, the silver team ended up in the bottom two this week and they were sent home. We had a chance to talk with Carla about her experiences on the ranch. Read more »
Last week on The Biggest Loser, Cathy sacrificed herself to keep Aubrey in the game. The blue team walks back in the living room and the black team is floored. No one can believe Cathy went home. Aubrey and Kristin explain that Cathy decided to go home for the two of them. Kristin is very emotional at this point and gets hugs and love from all the other contestants, especially Tara and Mike. Ron says he’d do the exact same thing for Mike, which we all knew already. When Kristin goes to her room and sees Cathy’s empty bed, she’s fired up because she knows Cathy risked everything for her and she needs to give it her all.The contestants walk into the gym the next day and see all their colored t-shirts on mannequins along with Alison Sweeney waiting for them. She tells them all that they’re going to singles. Everyone will be in their individual colors from here on out. Kristin goes back to purple, Aubrey goes back to yellow, Tara and Laura go back to green, Filipe and Sione go back to blue, Ron and Mike go back to brown, and finally, Helen goes back to pink. Alison Sweeney gives Mike his original shirt from his first day on campus. He’s lost 118 pounds thus far. Him and Aubrey get in his old shirt together. He’s lost a whole person! Read more »
It must suck to be Tara in last week‘s The Biggest Loser: Couples.  Without an inkling of an idea what the weight distribution whatever is for, you can‘t help but think she‘s overreacted—what, the frontrunner, being ganged on by the rest?  No reassurances from Aubrey that it‘s a “compliment” of her weight loss so far could stop her from crying and feeling so bad about things.  And then we find out, from out of the blue, that it‘s part of a challenge—and, while it puts Tara at a disadvantage, look where it got her.   So much for the tears.  For some reason I thought it made her look slightly foolish, but who could blame her?  As if that hasn‘t happened to me…Since Tara was the one who got immunity, someone else had to go—and, last week, it had to be Aubrey.  In place because of Mandi‘s departure a few weeks back, and later when Cathy decided to sacrifice herself, well, you do feel that you deserve your place in the ranch, that you ain‘t meant to go and all that.   At least her elimination was deserving of the emotional outburst, compounded by what Ron said—that she has to go home and help her dad lose some weight, too.  It just had to do it. Read more »
Last week on The Biggest Loser, Tara won yet another challenge. Her strength in the competitions has become a major threat to the other contestants and last week, they made it apparent that she’d be the biggest target. Aubrey and Filipe fell below the yellow line and ultimately, Aubrey was sent home. Sione tells Filipe that Ron and Mike wanted him to go home. Evidently, the Brown team and Blue team had made an alliance at the beginning of the game and it’s obvious that the alliance is dead. It seems like the players are starting to play the game. Read more »

For lack of any new photos, I ended up using a photo of Nicole from way, way back.  Still fitting, though, as it was she who powered last week’s episode of The Biggest Loser: Couples—she made it a stagnant episode, as she ended up going home after returning to the ranch, but she made it a significant one, highlighting the other thing that you need to be able to pull off a big feat like losing weight: emotional stability. Her return to the ranch, if you may recall, was simple: she lost the most weight among the three former contestants who returned.   87 pounds is not easy, especially if you’re not really into it.   It’s sad to see that she ended up gaining five pounds on the ranch just because she tried to deal with how much the dynamics of the ranch changed—indeed, as Bob Harper, err, stressed, extreme stress can cause one to gain weight.   Ah, the human body indeed is as complicated as it looks. Read more »
Last week on The Biggest Loser, Nicole shook up the game for a week by coming back and then was immediately eliminated due to her stress on the ranch. Many were relieved because she’s obviously a strong player in the game. After the elimination, the contestants walk back to the house and Mike and Ron are really angry with Filipe, Sione and Helen. Ron thanks those who kept him here and then says that he hopes the people who voted for him get struck down and die. Sione speaks up and says that he’s playing for himself and no one else. Ron tells Filipe that he lied to him and Filipe just keeps his mouth shut. It’s kind of funny that Ron is so mad at the blue men because he tried to vote off Filipe the week before. When Ron and Mike leave, the contestants talk about how manipulative Ron has been in the game.Ron thinks it’s his responsibility to see that things are done right. Evidently, he sees himself as the father figure on the ranch. He tells Mike that they should be friendly and nice in order to keep their enemies close. The contestants walk into the gym to find Alison Sweeney and a bunch of silver trays. It’s going to be a temptation challenge. She informs them they’re competing for the biggest prize in Biggest Loser history. There are 100 trays in front of them. Whichever tray they open, they have to eat whatever is inside. Most of the trays have high-calorie snacks. Some trays have Extra sugar free gum with stacks of cash up to $5000. Under one tray, there’s a golden ticket which means they get to cast the one and only vote at this week’s elimination. Read more »

The winner gets one of the most amazing prizes of the season – a $25,000 kitchen makeover. Read more »

Last week on The Biggest Loser, Laura took ultimate control of the game and used her one vote to kick Sione Fa off The Biggest Loser Ranch. Many suspect Ron, a.k.a. “The Godfather” has a bit too much control over the game at the moment. Will he keep control of the game this week? This week, Filipe is reeling with Sione’s departure. Sione left a letter telling him he needs to make the commitment to be the best. Kristin comes to comfort him but starts crying with him. Filipe tells us that he needs to represent him and his family and Bob Harper. Kristin points out Jillian Michaels hasn’t lost a single player in seven weeks. Read more »
Last week‘s episode of The Biggest Loser: Couples was a big feel-good one.  Just what we needed.  Things getting too nasty on the floor?  What about a boost of inspiration, a boost of confidence, that boost of something to get us going?  We‘ve seen the folks on the ranch overcome what seemed to be insurmountable odds, and look at how much weight they‘ve lost.  Mike‘s broken the all-time record!  145 pounds in fifteen weeks, and he‘s far from over.  How bad could that be?But here‘s a simpler, less existential feel-good moment: makeovers.  Who doesn‘t like it?  Sure, some makeovers go awry and people start bashing around after seeing the results, but for the most part, this is more beneficial than anything.  Tim Gunn and Tabatha Coffey setting them up for a Hollywood premiere, which turns out to be... another inspirational boost?  Apart from an opportunity to cross-promote Bravo shows on NBC, well, who wouldn‘t feel bad?  "Oh, I feel pretty," you‘d probably say.  Yeah.  Exactly. Read more »
Last week on The Biggest Loser, Tim Gunn gave our contestants makeovers. Unfortunately, the worst injury to ever hit the ranch fell on Laura and she was eliminated. This week, Kristin is psyched to still be in the house. She even goes as far as thanking Ron. Tara, on the other hand, isn‘t handling Laura‘s departure that well. She didn‘t realize how much she depended on Laura. She definitely realizes that it‘s game time. And all the other contestants do too.Jillian Michaels comes to the house to find Tara alone in her room. Evidently, Jillian told Mike to send Laura home and Tara wants to confront her about it. Jillian starts yelling at Tara and tells her to stop being selfish. We all know Jillian is competitive and would take out Bob‘s team is she could but Laura needed to be home because she can‘t walk. Jillian tells her that it‘s time for her to focus on herself. They then hug and say I love you. It‘s cute. Read more »
It‘s no secret that Tara has been one of my favorites this season of The Biggest Loser. She drops weight left and right. Since coming onto the ranch nine weeks ago, Tara has lost a total of 117 pounds. That‘s over one pound per day. When other players are hoping for double-digit numbers, Tara expects them of herself. I‘ve compiled a list of Tara‘s greatest accomplishments thus far. Whether it comes to winning immunity challenges or encouraging her teammates, Tara has been a pleasure to watch this season. Although there are other solid competitors, after reading through her superstar season, there‘s not doubt in my mind: Tara Costa should win. So, let‘s take a look back a Tara‘s season thus far: Read more »
Now, I‘m the guy who usually scoffs when watching anything that veers towards achingly touching and achingly poignant (despite my actual tendencies to be just that), but The Biggest Loser always manages to be an exception.  I don‘t know.  You‘re bound to cheer on everybody and hate only those who are annoying, and only because they‘re annoying.  That provided, last week was a treasure trove of scoff-able moments, if there‘s such a term.  Alas, the magic worked, and I didn‘t.Moment one: Bob Harper and Kristin Steede, also known as the girl who was eliminated last week.  To be honest, I was still wondering how some contestants doubt their ability to go far when they‘ve already gone farther than they expected.  Then again, her point makes sense--she might want to make it to the end, but if she doesn‘t, it‘ll be a missed opportunity and she‘ll hate herself for it, or something.  After a few exchanged words, the hug happens and it becomes sappy, yet empowering. Read more »
Last week on The Biggest Loser, Kristin and Helen fell below the yellow line. Although Ron promised Kristin that he‘d do everything he could to keep her on the ranch, he actually went behind closed doors to tell his son, Mike, to vote Kristin off. In the elimination room, Kristin knew she‘d been betrayed and Mike got cocky and told Allison Sweeney he thinks he‘s already won the game. This week, The Biggest Loser picks right back up after the elimination. Mike hugs Helen and Tara tells her how happy she is that Helen‘s still on the ranch. Helen thanks the whole room for keeping her for one more week. Mike and Ron leave the room because Mike says he has stuff to do. Filipe tells us that he likes to play dumb but he knows he‘s the biggest threat to Mike. Ron and Mike go to their room and Ron congratulates Mike on making it into the finale. Mike tells us that his dad is masterful at the game. While Ron‘s playing chess, everyone else is playing checkers. Read more »
Last week on The Biggest Loser: Couples, Filipe found himself going home in what was otherwise a very good day for everybody else in the ranch.  It‘s achingly schmee--"schmee" being my term for emotional--and achingly inspirational, since it was the here‘s-how-far-you‘ve-gone part of the competition.  The politics faded away, and while some strategy still had to happen, you can‘t help but feel anything very intense--well, anything but happiness, I presume.  Or, in my part, that gooey attempt to stop myself, to no avail.  You know what I mean.It means another thing: control of who wins the entire thing is slowly shifting towards us.  The final four--Ron, Mike, Tara and Helen--have now returned home for roughly a month, attempting to lose more weight (which should be effortless now) and then do one more weigh-in.  Two will move to the finals, where we vote for who wins the entire thing, which is probably moot since, well, look at them! Read more »

We‘ve made it yet again--The Biggest Loser: Couples, the season finale.  We started with eleven couples, some breaking previously established records on the show--the oldest contestant, the youngest contestant, you get the idea.  As the competition pushed on we even got a few more records shattered--one broke the all-time record for the amount of weight lost, another broke a similar record for female contestants.  There‘s seemingly no reason not to feel bad for anybody in this season, and although politics may have gotten in the way of the aspirations of some to win the entire thing, well, at least they‘ve lost weight, and nothing can beat that. But, of course, there‘s always the $250,000 prize, which either of the four remaining contestants could win provided they lost the most weight.  Or, if you got eliminated, there‘s the $100,000 at-home prize.  Tonight‘s going to be another one of those nights, when we get to see the final numbers for everybody, coupled with a lot of feel-good hugs and tears.  You get the idea. Read more »

Seven seasons of The Biggest Loser later, that perception of trainer Jillian Michaels as the mean one--at least relative to the nice, calm Bob Harper--never gets scrubbed off.  Never mind that all of the show‘s winners trained under her.  Then again, it does hurt for her to be given such a tag."I don‘t think it‘s mean when you‘re confronting somebody with their issues, trying to help them create a change in their lives," she said while in Chicago to attend an event for a health magazine.  "Tough, yes.  Demanding, yes.  Impossible, sometimes.  But mean?  Not really." Read more »
