Articles for The Biggest Loser Season 5

It has not even been two weeks since season 4 of The Biggest Loser ended and tonight, we kick off season 5!  How‘s that for a break?  If it seems soon for us, just imagine how quickly it came for host Alison Sweeney and trainers Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels.  They only had about a month off before heading back to the show.  Tonight, the new season brings new contestants with new twists.  The season fivers will compete in teams of two and their relationships range from brothers to divorcees to complete strangers.  I‘m totally interested to see how the divorced duo are going to work.  I‘m about to find out as the episode is just getting started.  Here‘s what happened on tonight‘s premiere. Read more »
On last night‘s premiere of The Biggest Loser, the contestants arrived on campus the competition kicked into gear right away.  The duos found out that their successes and failures would rest on each other since they would have to compete in pairs, not teams, as they had originally thought.  Among those pairs were a father and daughter from Ohio, Lynn and Jenni.  At the age of 62, Lynn was the oldest competitor this season and struggled with some of the physical aspects of the show.  He gave his daughter a hard time about working out and left her alone in the gym before the weigh-in.  Despite his refusal to work hard, he dropped 19 pounds but when Jenni only lost 7, it wasn‘t enough to keep them above the yellow line.  The other teams felt Lynn and Jenni weren‘t on the same page and they became the first team eliminated.  Today, they talked to BuddyTV about their elimination and life back home.  Below, you will find the complete mp3 and transcript of the interview. Read more »

All those who want to take part in the challenge can register with a workout partner via biggestloser.msn.com.  The registration period ends on Tuesday, March 11.  Participants will be able to put their fitness knowledge to the test, as well as receive fitness expert advice from Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels, two of the The Biggest Loser‘s trainers, and MSN Health and Fitness experts. Read more »
On tonight‘s episode of The Biggest Loser, the participants face a challenge involving a barbecue buffet.  They‘ll have to remember what Bob always says: "Stay AWAY from the BUFFET!"  They‘re also in for a surprise when Bob and Jillian decide to train them together.  Tonight‘s challenge involves a seesaw - and a lot of drama, I‘m sure. When Bob and Jillian broke the news that they‘d be training the duos together, nobody looked too thrilled.  After all, just a week ago, these contestants chose their trainers based on who they felt they could work with best.  Bob is warm and fuzzy while Jillian is intense and a screamer.  They get the contestants right to work and put them through an intense workout.  It was too intense for Bette Sue, who fell right off the treadmill but got right back on a second later. Neill begins to slack on his workouts and Jillian takes immediate notice.  She forces him on the treadmill, not letting him disappoint his wife.  He walks for an hour and no one is allowed to leave the gym until he finishes. Read more »
Brown team Curtis and Mallory entered The Biggest Loser competition with a combined weight of 598 pounds.  In the first episode, the husband and wife did well in both challenges and ranked at the top of the pack after the weigh in.  This week, they made a fatal mistake.  Host Alison Sweeney separated the contestants from their partners.  One at a time, they were brought to a barbecue buffet where they had 4 minutes to consume as many calories as they wished.  Whoever consumed the most would win $5,000.  Most of the players opted out of eating but Mallor decided against her better judgement to eat.  As a result, she gained one pound while her husband (who chose not to eat) lost 3 pounds.  A 2 pound weight loss put them behind the yellow line and their competitors decide to send them home, feeling they would be a good support system for each other on the outside.  Today, Curtis and Mallory spoke to BuddyTV about their time on the show, the temptation challenge, and life after The Biggest Loser. Read more »
If you are a contestant on The Biggest Loser, it certainly must sting if you are eliminated prior to the chance to win the cash prize. However, unlike on other reality shows, the contestants can directly use the experiences and lessons gained from the show to help them still win something pretty awesome: lasting weight loss.Jez Luckett was eliminated from The Biggest Loser before the finale, but he lost 150 pounds and has kept weight off since the show. He‘s now turning his experience into something to help others. Read more »
On tonight‘s episode of The Biggest Loser, Bob and Jillian meet with the contestants and are shocked after learning that Curtis and Mallory have been eliminated.  Alison tells the orange team they‘ll have to hike up what she called a mountain but what is actually just a big hill and choose between three rewards for winning last week‘s weigh in: luxury, family, or game play.  The choose game play and get the opportunity to cast two votes in the next elimination.  They gave up visiting with a family member of their choice for 24 hours and free massages for a week in favor of the game play reward.  When they tell the other teams, the look of panic and fear on their faces are evident. Read more »
Too much too soon?  We had only a few weeks off in between seasons 4 and 5 of The Biggest Loser.  Does anyone remember that season that the show doesn‘t even count when they worked with families?  If you didn‘t, don‘t worry about it because it was awful.  I‘m not sure how I feel about this season, where contestants compete in duos and no team works exclusively with Bob and Jillian.  There seems to be more drama than usual, more fighting, more whining.  I never like when family members compete together on reality shows.  It‘s what I can‘t stand about Big Brother‘s Dick and Daniele Donato or The Amazing Race‘s Ronald and Christina Hsu.  I don‘t need people with daddy issues on my television set, work it out in counseling.  However, despite my minor disappointment thus far in season 5 of The Biggest Loser, I‘ve still picked favorites to win the season and least favorites I‘d like to go home as soon as possible. Read more »
When we last left The Biggest Loser couples, the contestants had just voted off the white team, Amanda and Neill.  Before they leave for the night, Alison asks them to answer an important question: If they could vote out any other team, right now, who would it be?  Their answer will affect everyone not just this week but perhaps for the entire game.  After an hour long debate, everyone heads back to cast their votes. Surprisingly, the orange team doesn‘t get one vote while the yellow team gets the most.  Paul and Kelly begin to say their goodbyes but Alison stops them, telling them they‘re not going anywhere.  For this week the game has become, everyone against them.  The yellow team will have to beat them in the challenge and the weigh in or immediately be sent home.  Paul and Kelly choose Jillian as their exclusive trainer for the week and get to work. Read more »
On last night‘s episode of The Biggest Loser, the teams faced a huge twist.  After sending the white team home, teams were sent to deliberate for an hour about who they would send home next if they could.  Paul and Kelly, the yellow team, received the most votes and prepared to head home.  Host Alison Sweeney surprised them and said that they wouldn‘t be leaving just yet.  For this week only, all teams competed against the yellow team in both the challenge and the weigh in.  If they won, they could pick any team to eliminate but if they lost, they‘d immediately be the ones sent home.  The orange, blue, and purple teams saw this as an opportunity to get rid of the black team and threw the weigh in.  The problem was that Mark and Jay were The Biggest Losers this week, giving them immunity.  Paul and Kelly were forced to eliminate another team and chose the pink team, Ali and Bette-Sue.  Today, the mom and daughter talked to BuddyTV about their unfair elimination and the teams who betrayed them.Below, you will find the complete transcript and mp3 of the interview. Read more »

On tonight‘s episode of The Biggest Loser, the purple team confronts the other teams after being called "lazy" in the elimination room.  Maggie and Jenn start to worry that they‘re in an alliance with the wrong team after Paul and Kelly criticized them in front of America.  Bob gets tough with the purple team, telling them to stop worrying what other people think and just worry about themselves. The contestants are still reeling from last week‘s news that they no longer will be up for elimination as a team, but as individuals.  They will weigh in as a team but if they fall below the yellow line, only one of them will go home. Read more »
This week on The Biggest Loser, the contestants were shocked to find out that they would no longer compete as duos.  Players were split into two teams, training with either Bob or Jillian.  Maggie and Jenn (formerly of the purple team) ended up with Jillian, a choice they were very happy about.  When the black team pulled low numbers at the weigh in, they decided to send home Jenn instead of Paul or Kelly.  Jenn was forced to say goodbye to her partner, Maggie, and head home to work out on her own.  Today, Jenn talked to BuddyTV about her experience on The Biggest Loser.  Below, you will find the complete transcript and mp3 of the interview. Read more »
The Biggest Loser has been reaching out beyond the reality show for some time now. There are books and DVD‘s available for the lose-at-home crowd, and recently, the show and MSN launched the Million Pound Match-Up weight loss challenge to encourage people to get fit. Sure, it‘s all marketing for the show, and the books and DVD‘s are other revenue streams for NBC, but, really, who cares? If something can help someone get and stay motivated, it‘s probably a good thing. In support of this good thing, two former The Biggest Loser contestants are appearing this weekend in Houston, aiming to give support and guidance to those who‘d like to start their own weight loss and fitness journey. Read more »
On tonight’s episode of The Biggest Loser, Kelly dealt with the aftermath of pulling a 0 at the last weigh in while Maggie tried to persevere without her partner, Jenn. Jillian tried to get to the bottom of what was wrong with her team and got her answer: food. Brittany was hardly eating and was barely putting down 500 calories per day. Jillian stressed the importance of eating the correct and healthy amount of calories in order to properly lose weight. For tonight’s temptation, contestants were placed in booths that were blocked off on either side. In front of them lay 100 chocolates and the first person to eat them or eat the most in 5 minute would win the ability to swap any two team members of their choice, including themselves. Read more »
On last night‘s episode of The Biggest Loser, the blue team couldn‘t cut it at the weigh in and found themselves facing elimination.  It seemed like Trent would be the one to go, who had been complaining of being homesick.  Instead, Mark and Jay went back on their word and voted out Jackie.  She and her son, Dan, were angry realizing that they had been blindsided, especially after Mark and Jay swore on their children‘s lives to tell them first before they wrote their names down.  A woman whose never afraid to speak her mind, Jackie sat down with BuddyTV today to dish on her fellow contestants and life after The Biggest Loser. On tonight’s episode of The Biggest Loser, Alison Sweeney shocked the contestants when she sent them home for a week. It sounds like a good deal except that back home, their friends and family aren’t on a diet. They’ll also have to survive without Bob and Jillian and make up their own workout plan. Jay looked forward to a little distance from the game after being the reason that his team lost the weigh in last week. He’s hoping to come back to the game with more passion and clarity than he had. Read more »

Bob was not as excited as his team was, reminding them to be careful. He laid down the rules: no buffets, no restaurants, no drinking. Read more »
Last night may have been the most emotional episode in Biggest Loser history.  After the blue team put up disappointing numbers at the weigh in, someone had to go home.  Two weeks earlier, Mark had mentioned that he would sacrifice himself but when faced with the reality of the situation, he wavered.  Ultimately, he bowed out, especially after losing only 1 pound in the weigh in.  He felt he had hit the wall and his body was giving out on him.  For the good of the team, and for his brother‘s sake, he headed home to his family.  Today, Mark spoke to BuddyTV about his emotional elimination.Below, you will find the complete transcript and mp3 of the interview. Read more »
We‘ve seen The Biggest Loser trainer Bob Harper put his teams through tough work-outs, inspire and motivate them emotionally, and help them learn and maintain new healthy eating habits. Fans of The Biggest Loser have been watching his system for five seasons now, and can probably recite some of his principle by heart. Nevertheless, with weight issues being a lifelong struggle for many, a little repetition probably can‘t hurt, and so NBC provides a few key tips from The Biggest Loser star on eating right, exercising, and staying motivated. Read more »
On tonight’s episode of The Biggest Loser, the contestants had to face a tough temptation. One at a time, they would have to go to a vending machine. The machine would drop any random item inside and if it was junk food, they’d have to eat it. However, if it dropped a pack of Extra gum, it could contain a cash prize of a 1 pound pass at the next weigh in. Roger decides to participate and gets gum, worth $1,000. On his next drop, though, he gets a bag of chips. He chooses again and gets the 1 pound pass. Happy with what he received, he heads back to his blue team. It gets a little obvious when a reality show begins to turn stale.  Viewers begin to be able to predict where the show is headed and even lose interest.  Take the CW‘s Beauty and The Geek, for example.  The show that was once a hit returned this season to embarrassing ratings, surely due in part to last season‘s twist where a female was a geek and a guy was a beauty.  They changed things up too much and lost some loyal fans.  This season of The Biggest Loser, it seems there‘s a twist every week.  From eliminated players returning to the game to trainers constantly gaining and losing players on the team, this season is starting to have me shake my head a little bit. Read more »

It‘s always interesting how people can get so much time off from their jobs in order to film a reality show.  According to The Biggest Loser trainer Bob Harper, that show has a longer shooting schedule than any other reality show.  Even after contestants leave the show, they often spend their days working out and doing interviews instead of heading to a 9-5 job in order to prepare for the show‘s live finale.  Unfortunately for season 5 contestant Roger Shultz, his employer couldn‘t allow him to miss out on any more work and gave him a pink slip. Read more »
