I‘m always impressed when a TV show can overcome a ridiculous premise and turn it into something special, which is the case with ABC Family‘s newest drama, Switched at Birth (premiering Monday at 9pm). Despite an awkward idea that would be better suited for a Lifetime original movie (two families learn that their now teenage daughters were accidentally switched at birth ... and one of them is DEAF!), the show has heartwarming and relatable characters, creating a TV show that makes viewers feel like a part of the family.  Read more »

Here‘s your BuddyTV High Five: The five big moments and questions from tonight‘s episodeof Switched at Birth, "American Gothic."After finding out they were accidently switched at birth, Daphne and Bay find themselves livinga little too close for comfort. Fortunately, while their parents argue about the situation, they findsolace in their budding relationships.High Five Highlights:5. Home Sweet Home: After finding out in the pilot that their parents are not biological,Daphne and Regina move conveniently into the guest house of Regina‘s biological daughter andBay‘s adopted parents, Kathryn and John. (The OC‘s the Cohens would be proud.) The result ismore like a full house than burgeoning family ties.4. Family Values: Not surprisingly, the parental units at the Kennish house (and guesthouse) disagree about several things including whether deaf Daphne should drive or ride amotorcycle. Following a long line of traditional television family traditions, things come to ahead at the dinner table and, like Toby says, "this can‘t end well." Is Toby talking about theliving arrangement between the two families? Or the series as a whole?3. Love Is in the Air ... For Bay: Bay turns to Ty after the family dinner goes bad andshares with him her love for graffiti, especially a Banksy type artist who she points out as herfavorite. We can pretty much guess who it is as Ty stays quiet and later, after moving his jetblack hair out of his face, makes a move on Bay.2. Family Secrets: As Regina and Bay get to know one another, Bay learns that Reginais an alcoholic after finding her AA chips as she helps Regina pack. "This is why you can‘t takea drink," explains Regina. Meanwhile, Regina breaks it to Daphne that Kathryn and John don‘tthink she should be able to drive.1. Family Court: The Kennishes want to sue the hospital for the accidental switch upof the girls and their lawyer advises for one big lawsuit. Knowing Regina needs the money,Kathryn and John can‘t figure out why she is dead set against the idea.  Read more »

Here‘s your BuddyTV High Five: The five big moments and questions from tonight‘s episode of‘Switched at Birth‘, "Dance Amongst Daggers."Each week, Switched at Birth reminds more and more of The OC: the pool house, the fancy socialiteparties, the gossip, the band playing in the background, the boy from the wrong side of the tracks. Evenso, Switched at Birth lacks Josh Schwartz‘s timing and humor and I still wish that Seth Cohen in a Penguinpolo shirt will show up, tell an awkward joke and mention the last band reviewed by Pitchfork before heleaves. I‘d even settle for a text message from A. This week, however, Switched at Birth showedheart. And it showed it in a unique way. Buried under the show‘s interesting-in-theory plot of two teenagegirls switched at birth by the hospital and Marlee Matlin‘s presence (since one of those teenagers is deaf),this week, we watched a moment from the point of view of the Emmett character, also deaf. Emmett, much to the surprise of everyone, sits in on drums for Toby‘s band playing a gala hosted by Kathryn toraise money for whatever they were raising money for. The moment was so well done that I have hope forSwitched at Birth. And if not, it‘s nice to see Austin Butler playing the third member of the band. I am gladhe found work after Life Unexpected was cancelled.  Read more »
Here‘s your BuddyTV High Five: The five big moments and questions from tonight‘s episode of Switched at Birth, "The Persistence of Memory." Daphne is still deaf and while audiences have accepted and embraced it -- a huge coup for minority populations who don‘t usually see themselves in characters on TV -- Bay‘s school is not comfortable with it. Assigned an interpreter in a cooking class, Daphne bonds with Bay and overcomes the other kid‘s teasing. If the school can accept it, can her birth mother?  Read more »

For a quick recap, at prom Emmett confessed to Bay that he slept with Simone and after first saying no, Wilke did take Daphne to the dance before being shipped off to boarding school.
