Articles for So You Think You Can Dance Season 8

FOX obviously led the evening last night with its premiere of the eighth season of So You Think You Can Dance. No new summer shows have premiered as of yet, so Dance is completely without competition at the moment. So You Think You Can Dance was up 7% from last year‘s premiere episode, with 9.1 million viewers. The episode consisted of the auditions held in Atlanta and the Bay area, with judges Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy and a host of guest judges selecting the cream of the crop to join them in Vegas.Check out our So You Think You Can Dance recap here! Read more »

While only two of the auditions (Atlanta and San Francisco) have aired so far, there are already spoilers floating around about which of the hopeful dancers will make So You Think You Can Dance‘s Top 20. Otherwise, run far, far away from these spoilers. Read more »
We‘re into the second week of So You Think You Can Dance auditions, which means it‘s high time to start thinking about the whole season. Which of the hopeful dancers will make it into competition as part of the Top 20? Who will be a judge this season? How will the judges even pick their favorites?Fortunately, FOX has released several short videos addressing these questions. They‘re not quite the same as a full episode, but they may just tide you over. Read more »

Will the auditioning performers live up to the high standards set in Atlanta and San Francisco last week? We‘ll just have to watch and find out. Read more »
For the second week in a row, FOX‘s summer dance competition, So You Think You Can Dance, dominated its timeslot, losing very few viewers after its premiere episode last week. The only contender was the first game of the Stanley Cup.SYTYCD hit Salt Lake and New York last night, with 8.99 million viewers. It was up 7% from last season‘s Wednesday timeslot, but down 8% from last week‘s Thursday premiere episode. A slight dip in viewership after a premiere is to be expected. Relatively uncontested, SYTYCD will likely continue to dominate its timeslot throughout this season. If you missed it, check out the dancers from last night‘s auditions in our handy recap!  Read more »
This is it -- the last of the So You Think You Can Dance auditions before the likely candidates head to Las Vegas for the final selection of the Top 20. First off, a disclaimer. These rankings are in no way meant to imply that we at BuddyTV have any knowledge of who will triumph in next week‘s Las Vegas competition of So You Think You Can Dance. These are simply the performances that, when looking back, stand out as particularly memorable or amazing. Read more »
If there‘s one thing I learned from watching So You Think You Can Dance, it‘s this: the dance world is a small one. There‘s always a chance that the dancer you‘re watching knows, or has worked with, either a former contestant, a fellow hopeful, or one of the show‘s judges or choreographers. Or maybe we‘ve seen them in previous seasons of the show.Say, Ryan Ramirez, who auditioned in San Francisco. She almost made it to the Top 11 last year, but was cut from the Top 24. (I couldn‘t find a clip of that moment, though.) And then there‘s the fact that she also worked with former SYTYCD judge Mia Michaels, which might explain as to why she didn‘t make it last year -- and why she might make it this year.  Read more »

The NBA Finals continue to dominate summer primetime ratings, leaving both reality and scripted shows in the dust. I‘d wager the producers of So You Think You Can Dance can‘t wait until June 14, when the NBA Finals will end.The Heat/Mavericks game on ABC was up and then some, with a whopping total of 16.92 million viewers to its name.  Read more »
Finally, after two weeks of auditions, callbacks and more tears than you can shake a stick at, So You Think You Can Dance has chosen its Top 20 dancers for season 8. There were a few surprises (who knew there was a tap dancer in contention this year?) and a few familiar faces (after all that Vegas footage, Sasha Mallory was a certainty). Now, it‘s time to get to know them all! Read more »
While every week of So You Think You Can Dance‘s season 8 will feature the yin-yang duo of Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy in the judges‘ chairs, that still leaves a third, empty seat to be filled. There will be no regular third judge this season. Instead, So You Think You Can Dance will welcome a rotating cadre of guest judges from week to week. And we now know who the first, totally awesome guest judge will be... Read more »
We know who the So You Think You Can Dance contestants are, but that‘s about it thus far. It‘s time to learn more. For example, which star has a fondness for professional wrestling? Who might be described as a "home-skillet biscuit?" And which Top-20 dancer dreams of red velvet cakes and rainbows?Check out the pre-season interviews to find out! Read more »
How do you top the combination of hot-tamale Mary Murphy and dancingly-dour Nigel Lythgoe? Apparently you do it with guest judges. On the same day that FOX announced actress Megan Mullally as the week-1 guest, reports have surfaced about a whole host of incredible celebrities set to grace the SYTYCD judging table. The dancers are going to have to perform their socks off if they want to upstage these people. Read more »
After the auditions, after the cuts and after Las Vegas, we have finally made it to the competition portion of So You Think You Can Dance. The Top 20 have been picked, and we now need to start the slow, harrowing process of getting rid of them, two-by-two.  Read more »
It‘s safe to say that we couldn‘t have asked for a better first week of So You Think You Can Dance. The performers were charming, the choreographers were (mostly) on fire and the dances looked great. Unfortunately, such success makes any sort of elimination predictions kind of difficult. Maybe impossible. But that‘s a good problem to have. Read more »
So You Think You Can Dance dipped slightly last night, facing some heavy competition from game 7 of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals, which aired during its timeslot. After several weeks of auditions, followed by some eliminations, FOX‘s SYTYCD finally moved on to the competition portion of the season, with the top 20 performing dances to vie for coveted top 10 spots. SYTYCD was down 7% versus last Wednesday‘s episode, with 7.8 million viewers. It was just barely edged out by the NHL Stanley Cup Finals.  Read more »
All too soon, it‘s time for the very first results of So You Think You Can Dance‘s eighth season. The journey has just begun, but, for two of the dancers, this is it. The end. No more dancing. Bye-bye. But which dancers will face the first cut? Read more »
Even with the NBA Finals behind us, So You Think You Can Dance failed to bolster its viewership. It actually performed better last week, when the finals games aired during its timeslot.FOX‘s SYTYCD was down a full 16% versus last Thursday‘s two-hour episode, with 6.48 million viewers. It still easily ruled the evening, but it also faces zero competition. Ratings for SYTYCD have slid steadily downwards over the course of eight seasons. On the bright side, it‘s actually outperforming season 7, which saw regular turnouts of fewer than 5 million viewers.  Read more »
So that happened.I had planned to write about the eliminated dancers this morning. Typical of TV to screw up my plans. Still, it does make things a little more interesting. With the first week‘s non-elimination, there is a lot more to anticipate in week 2. Read more »
The So You Think You Can Dance judges will be required to eliminate four competitors during this week‘s show. That‘s going to be tough, considering that they couldn‘t even eliminate two dancers in week 1. The panel that must face this challenge will include Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy and this week‘s guest judge, Debbie Reynolds. Read more »
It‘s like deja vu, all over again, for week 2 of So You Think You Can Dance.Just like last week, there are 20 dancers taking to the stage in an attempt to win praise and votes for their performances. The individual dancers are the same. The couples are the same. Will the outcome be any different? Read more »
President Obama‘s address on the situation in Afghanistan last night, while brief, still managed to push our Wednesday night programming back 16 minutes. As a result, the ratings below are a little iffy, but still give us a good benchmark for how these shows are doing. FOX‘s So You Think You Can Dance dropped considerably, declining at least 10% versus last week‘s Wednesday episode. The dancing competition brought in 6.48 million viewers, fairly low for its timeslot (which is currently being dominated by NBC‘s The Voice).  Read more »
It‘s safe to say that all of my elimination predictions from last week were dead wrong. But that‘s what happens when the judges decide to throw out the show format and keep everyone around for a second week of dancing. This week, however, they must eliminate four of the SYTYCD dancers. So predictions are definitely in order. Read more »
After last week‘s shocking lack of elimination, week 2 became fated as a bloodbath. Instead of the normal two dancers facing elimination, four of the season 8 So You Think You Can Dance performers would be done. No avoiding it this time! But who are the eliminated dancers? Read more »
You‘re reading this on BuddyTV, which means you‘re probably familiar with all the things we do on this site: bring you the latest in the world of television, from which House star is appearing on The Good Wife to who got the shocking boot on last night‘s So You Think You Can Dance. Yeah, I think you‘re quite familiar with that. So, let‘s see how much you learned this week, shall we? Read more »
The evening was interposed with premieres last night, with extreme game show Wipeout and Amazing Race rip-off Expedition Impossible facing off against So You Think You Can Dance. ABC had both Wipeout and Expedition Impossible on its team last night, and walked away with the evening. Wipeout premiered with 7.47 million viewers, while Expedition Impossible entered its first season with 7.05 million viewers. Not bad for a couple of ridiculous summer outdoor game shows, eh?  Read more »
The third week of So You Think You Can Dance competition will feature a much-decimated cast of dancers -- last week‘s elimination of Nick Young, Missy Morelli, Iveta Lukosiute and Wadi Jones brings us down to only 16 competitors. They will, however, be joined by a new guest judge and a guest dance group. Read more »
Today the nominations for the 2011 Teen Choice Awards were announced, and as usual, it‘s a collection of obvious choices. Guess what? Teens still love Twilight, and they also really like Justin Bieber, Glee and Justin Timberlakie (who, at 30 years old, will probably be given a Lifetime Achievement Award next year). Read more »
February may have passed us by, but Cupid‘s arrow just keeps on hitting targets - particularly the rich and famous. Also, keep an eye out for questions on the country‘s biggest sweethearts, heartthrobs, and hotties.   Read more »
Week 3 of So You Think You Can Dance has arrived! Things should definitely start to get interesting as the contestants perform to see which of them will make it another week. And now there are only 16 dancers left...You know, it feels kind of empty with only 16 dancers. I guess I got used to 20. Oh well. Read more »
Even after a lovefest like the third week of So You Think You Can Dance, there is a sad, sad ending. No matter how great the dancers were during their performances, one girl and one guy will need to go home tonight. Who will they be? Read more »
NBC won the night handily with the season finale of The Voice and a fresh episode of America‘s Got Talent. ABC‘s Love in the Wild also premiered, and did fairly well for its timeslot. On FOX, So You Think You Can Dance continued its slow, painful ratings decline, slipping even further down the slope. But with The Voice over, will the former summer giant regain some footing in its timeslot? Let‘s look at the numbers. Read more »
Last night‘s performance lovefest can‘t keep us from the sadness that must come tonight as the So You Think You Can Dance Top 16 dwindle to a Top 14. Hopefully, we can at least get a final kiss before the unlucky two are sent home. But who exactly must say goodbye? Read more »
Leading into the three-day holiday weekend, programming was down for all the big networks. On ABC, Wipeout, Expedition Impossible and Rookie Blue were all down. On FOX, So You Think You Can Dance continued to slip. And on NBC, Love Bites, unsurprisingly, dipped. Despite the faltering ratings, ABC won the night with its full lineup of fresh programming. Let‘s look at the numbers!  Read more »
It‘s Friday again, which means it‘s time to look back (again!) on another crazy week of television. We learned of a blast-from-the-past twist on Big Brother this year. We had a winner on The Voice. And weird things happened on the So You Think You Can Dance stage. Oh, and yes, you‘re right, there is a challenge coming -- this week‘s What Happened on TV? quiz! Read more »
It‘s Electra... boogie-woogie-woogie. (Apologies to those who do not appreciate "Electric Slide" references at the beginning of your articles.)As we approach the fourth week of the So You Think You Can Dance competition, it‘s time for yet another guest judge to appear. And this week‘s celebrity (sort of) is Carmen Electra. Read more »
The Week 4 is upon us, which means even tougher competition. Is this the week when we‘ll see a beloved front-runner disappear from the stage? It has to happen eventually... With only 14 dancers remaining in the So You Think You Can Dance competition, it gets more and more likely all the time. Read more »
Agreed, the point of reality TV competitions is to give the spotlight to a bunch of unknowns who are hoping to make it big in Hollywood. But they wouldn‘t really get anywhere without the guidance of professionals. We‘re dedicating this to the hosts and judges of reality television, who have given their support to dreamers all over the country. There‘s Big Brother‘s Julie Chen, the judging panel of America‘s Next Top Model, probably not Idol‘s Simon Cowell, and more.   Read more »
At this point, it‘s safe to say that there are no certainties when it comes to So You Think You Can Dance eliminations. Individual performances tend to make things go topsy-turvy (especially this week), so who knows what will happen?I don‘t know, but they pay me to guess.  Read more »
As expected, the finale of The Voice left plenty of unclaimed viewer territory for FOX‘s So You Think You Can Dance, which saw a huge boost in ratings. The former summer giant might continue regaining ground over the next few weeks as viewers continue shifting, but only time will tell. Shows across the board dropped otherwise, with America‘s Got Talent dipping a surprising amount after last night‘s stellar ratings performance. Let‘s take a look at the numbers.   Read more »
Soon, there will be only 12. Of the 14 dancers remaining on So You Think You Can Dance, two will not proceed into the next week of competition. Which dancers will make the cut? We‘ll find out tonight. Read more »
Another week of television has passed, which means it‘s time for us to act like our beloved grandparents: we sit back, we relax, and we look back. And we take a quiz that determines if we paid attention all these years -- or, in this case, all this week. It‘s pretty much like the crossword. Or Sudoku. You get the idea. Read more »
Last night saw the premiere of Big Brother 13, the summer reality phenomenon. CBS came roaring back, with Big Brother 13 turning out some of its best ratings ever, and easily winning the night. That‘s a nice change of pace for CBS, which has been airing reruns pretty consistently all summer. Meanwhile, on FOX, So You Think You Can Dance maintained its Thursday ratings versus last week. ABC‘s lineup of Wipeout, Expedition Impossible and Rookie Blue was a mixed bag, and NBC‘s Love Bites just kept on keeping on.Let‘s take a look at the numbers. Read more »
Sure, you‘re nursing not having the likes Yvonne Strahovski, Dianna Agron and Nina Dobrev* on your TV screens, but summer TV brings folks like us its own brand of hotties, too. Heck, they call it summer because of that! Read more »
With last week‘s elimination of Ashley Rich and Chris Koehl, So You Think You Can Dance is down to only 12 dancers. But this only means that the competition is heating up! The Emmy competition for Reality Competition is fairly static. Since the category was first created in 2003, The Amazing Race and American Idol have been nominated every year, with TAR winning for the first seven times (until a surprise upset by Top Chef last year). In fact, for the past four years, the nominees have been exactly the same: The Amazing Race, American Idol, Top Chef, Dancing with the Stars and Project Runway. But hopefully it won‘t be five in a row.  Read more »

The 2011 Emmy nominations were announced today, and as expected, last year‘s big winners, Mad Men and Modern Family, are the most nominated drama and comedy with 19 and 17 nominations, respectively. However, the nominees this year include a number of very pleasant surprises and big totals for HBO‘s freshman dramas Boardwalk Empire (18 nominations) and Game of Thrones (13 nominations).  Read more »
In one of the most important nights of the entire competition, two So You Think You Can Dance competitors will be eliminated tonight. It‘s an unfortunate -- but inevitable -- truth that someone has to come up just short of the Top 10. But who will it be?Although I‘ve often had no clue in the past, I‘m going to try to guess. Read more »
Last night, Big Brother 13 had its Wednesday-episode premiere, and boy did it ever. Big Brother enjoyed its best ratings for a Wednesday premiere since 2003. This supplied some stiff competition for NBC‘s America‘s Got Talent and FOX‘s So You Think You Can Dance. Love in the Wild too saw a considerable drop.Let‘s take a look at the numbers.  Read more »
Finally! When the 2011 Emmy nominations were announced, So You Think You Can Dance at last got the attention it deserved, picking up a total of 8 nominations. After tonight‘s So You Think You Can Dance elimination, only 10 of the original 20 competitors will remain on the show. They will, however, be joined by a group of All-Stars -- dancers from previous SYTYCD seasons -- for the remaining episodes. The full slate of All-Stars will be announced during the results show on July 14, but producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe let one name slip a little bit ahead of time. The named All-Star? Chelsie Hightower. Read more »

This is when we find out exactly who will make the Top 10 of So You Think You Can Dance‘s season 8, and who will go home with crushed dancing dreams. It seems kind of important. Even if it were not-so-important, we should be hearing about the SYTYCD season 8 All-Stars tonight.  Read more »
Shows were down across the board last night, on every broadcast network. Despite this TV-wide drop, CBS won the night with Big Brother. On ABC, Wipeout, Expedition Impossible and Rookie Blue all dipped considerably. And on FOX, So You Think You Can Dance didn‘t fare much better.Let‘s take a look at the numbers.  Read more »
Now that the Top 10 are announced for season 8 of So You Think You Can Dance, the excitement of the competition can really begin! What does So You Think You Can Dance have in store for us? Keep reading to find out. Read more »
In case you‘re a little surprised that Nigel Lythgoe only announced nine former finalists as part of the So You Think You Can Dance All-Star pool last night -- and I‘m not counting Alex Wong, who was going to be the tenth member if not for another injury -- then here‘s an explanation: the All-Stars will change every week.Nigel himself confirmed it on Twitter, "depending on our choice and their availability." Read more »
So You Think You Can Dance kicks things up a notch from tomorrow night, when the Top 10 start competing individually. As promised, we‘re seeing more All-Stars on So You Think You Can Dance next week. But I‘ll talk about that later, never mind that I‘m a bit more excited than usual. You see, there are two other names to watch out for when the Top 8 take to the stage next week: our guest judges, film/stage director Rob Marshall and pop performer Lady Gaga. So, here‘s what to expect on SYTYCD next week, with a lot of videos. Only 8 remain...After last week‘s not-terribly-surprising results, Clarice and Mitchell said goodbye to So You Think You Can Dance and narrowed the competition down to only four girls and four guys. And that number will only diminish further after tonight‘s performances. We‘re almost to the finals! Read more »
Since Lady Gaga just got to be a guest judge on So You Think You Can Dance, it‘s only fair we do today‘s quiz in her honor. She‘s reviewed the routines of the top 8 finalists on the show, so right now we‘re giving you a chance to review her life story.  Read more »
The Top-8 performance show on So You Think You Can Dance brought out some seriously tough competition. While the apparent front runners continued to dominate their dances, the rest of the dancers kept the competition alive on a night with no truly-bad performances. Unfortunately, such dancing excellence makes it awfully tough to pick who will be eliminated. But that‘s what we‘re going to try! Read more »
Apparently, Lady Gaga does.Last night, the world‘s most oddly-dressed singer showed her appreciation for the final SYTYCD performance by tossing her (giant, red) shoe at dancers Melanie and Sasha. Can we expect such craziness again tonight? It‘s possible. But we know we will at least be watching the last of two dancers in the competition. Read more »
I wish I could say that another week has finished, but it‘s been quite crazy here at BuddyTV HQ over the past few days -- thank you, Comic-Con -- that it‘s safe to say we‘re still in a bit of a hangover. And yet there are more things around the corner: Lady Gaga was on SYTYCD, Rachel continues her onslaught on Big Brother, and Ashley was a step closer to finding (really?) her true love on The Bachelorette. Read more »
The people at So You Think You Can Dance really like dancing. That‘s obvious when it comes to their own lives, but they also want to share their dancing with the world (or with the country anyway). Thus, they have been promoting the Second Annual National Dance Day on the show and on the SYTYCD website. National Dance Day is this Saturday, July 30, so it‘s time to learn those dances. Read more »
When this season of So You Think You Can Dance wraps up and America‘s Best Dancer is named, the Top 10 go on tour! Like every other year, really. And this year‘s no different, as the Top 10 (nope, no All-Stars this year... so far) go across the country to perform this season‘s best routines live. Which means you‘ll see the Top 6 -- Caitlynn Lawson, Marko Germar, Melanie Moore, Sasha Mallory, Ricky Jaime and Tadd Gadduang -- alongside last night‘s eliminees, Jess LeProtto and Jordan Casanova, and last week‘s eliminees, Clarice Ordaz and Mitchell Kelly. Read more »
I think the So You Think You Can Dance gods are listening to me, because another one of my favorite dancers will be an All-Star next week. But, again, I shouldn‘t be too excited. For one, we‘ve got only two weeks left before the season ends. But this week‘s shows were so good (except for the eliminations) I can‘t help but feel pretty good for next week. More All-Stars! The Prince of Buccness! Pia freaking Toscano!Okay, you know I‘m not exactly a Pia fan... but that‘s a different topic altogether. Anyway, here‘s what to expect on SYTYCD next week. Read more »
Season 8 of So You Think You Can Dance definitely has the potential to go down as one of the best in the show‘s history. From the craziness of Tadd to the wild intensity of Sasha to the near-perfection of Melanie and Marko, this season has wowed both judges and viewers. So You Think You Can Dance may soon come to an end, but that doesn‘t mean you can‘t continue to enjoy the dancing -- the Top 10 SYTYCD performers are going on tour!BuddyTV is excited to announce we‘re giving away a pair of tickets to each of the tour dates listed below! (It‘s entirely appropriate to dance in your office chair or even get up and dance around the room.) Read more »

With the Top 6 dances on this season of So You Think You Can Dance out of the way, the only thing that stands between the remaining dancers and the SYTYCD finale are tonight‘s results. What does that mean?Well for one thing, it means that this is a bad week to be Caitlynn.  Read more »
Another crazy week has gone past this flat-screen in front of me. (Of all of us, really.) Ashley got tired of the him-or-him? question and settled for a cupcake. The guidos decided to trace their roots and ended up doing more of the same. And we‘re a little (emphasis on little) closer to how Ashton Kutcher will end up with Charlie Sheen‘s shoes on Two and a Half Men. Read more »
Finally, the So You Think You Can Dance finale happens next week, and I find myself a little torn over what to feel. For one, I‘m sad that another season is going to end -- this show never wears me out, at least not as much as American Idol, where it can just get oh so frantic. But the finale looks pretty good: the four dancers remaining -- Marko Germar, Melanie Moore, Sasha Mallory and Tadd Gadduang -- all deserve the win, and I don‘t mind whatever happens. (Although I‘d love it if Melanie wins.)The fun doesn‘t have to end at the finale. BuddyTV has a pair of free tickets to each city on the SYTYCD Tour! Enter to win now>>Also, the finale gives me another opportunity to scream "Froderman!" at my TV -- but I feel a little scared, thanks to that little dark cloud hovering behind me named Katie Holmes. Read more »
This can‘t be a fun night for the remaining six contestants on So You Think You Can Dance. After weeks of performing and surviving eliminations, two of the dancers will have to go home -- right before the finals. Will Melanie and Marko continue their domination into the final week? Could Caitlynn sneak a victory over Sasha at the last moment? Will Ricky or Tadd snag a finale berth? We‘ll find out all of that tonight. Read more »

Expect another major format change when So You Think You Can Dance returns this May -- only this time, it‘s not good news (like the return of the All-Stars), and Nigel Lythgoe didn‘t really have a choice. The show‘s executive producer announced on Twitter earlier today that Fox has cancelled the show‘s results shows, meaning SYTYCD will only air once a week, rather than twice, this summer. Read more »
