Articles for Project Runway Season 8

Designers. . . Project Runway is back and not a moment too soon. More eyerolls from Tim. More oddly pronounced words from Heidi and who hasn‘t missed Nina Garcia‘s disapproving glare? Will we find another Santino? A Christian Siriano? A Daniel Franco? It all begins right now.  Read more »
The Season Eight premiere of Project Runway was an hour and half long, which meant that the designers had an extra thirty minutes in which to say something ridiculous. Move over Art Linkletter, it‘s not always the kids who say the darndest things. Read more »
Now that Project Runway has been supersized, does it seem like they‘re spending more time with the personal stuff? We got to see more designers eating, dragging on their clothes in the morning and sobbing. Yeah, there was a lot of sobbing. Read more »
This week on Project Runway, the designers had to make an outfit that represented the Marie Claire woman. It had to be fashion forward, strong, practical and sexy and it had to photograph well because it was going to end up on a 40 foot tall billboard in Times Square. In the end, there were a couple of excellent looks, a lot of mediocre looks and two that were so far off the mark the called out for elimination. Yes, two. Read more »
This week on Project Runway, the designers had to create their outfits using only items found in a party store. Tim cautioned all of them that the judges would not look kindly on designers who used only ‘fabric-like‘ materials such as table liners, but he forgot to warn them that the judges wouldn‘t look kindly on ugly either. Read more »
It‘s the third week of Project Runway and Gretchen has already won the first two challenges. But she deserved the win, just ask her. Not that a designer shouldn‘t have faith in themselves, but reality show contestants really should know better than to talk about how much they‘re loved in their on-camera confessional. Cue quick cut to Peach and April talking about how Gretchen needs to get over herself. Read more »
This week, the designers on Project Runway had to make a garment to go along with a wild, Philip Tracey hat. A great challenge, but I‘ve got a bee in my bonnet over how the judges ranked the clothes. Here‘s a look at the designs that came in better or worse than they should have. Read more »
This week‘s Project Runway was loaded with drama which is a good thing because the runway show itself was one of the most boring to date. Let‘s take a closer look at the designs that won, should have won and failed miserably. Read more »
Want to see Michael C pull a rabbit out of his hat? Just watch tonight‘s episode of Project Runway where the designers had to create an outfit to go along with a, dare I say, wacky Philip Tracey hat. One looked like a cooked shrimp, another like an overgrown olive and one wasn‘t a hat at all, it was a lacy, cat‘s eye mask. Read more »
The wheels on the bus go thump, thump, thump as they run over the bodies of the Project Runway designers. Seriously, I‘ve seen horror movies that weren‘t this much of a blood bath. One sweet designer got bashed, another took the fall and one person got what they had coming in the form of an uncharacteristic rant by Tim Gunn.  Read more »
It was button, button, who‘s got the button, on this week‘s episode of Project Runway. Not only did people toss buttons into a fish bowl in order to vote for their favorite, there was also a lot of button-pushing going on between the designers. But this isn‘t a personality contest, is it? It‘s about design and it used to be about the ability to sew, but it‘s looking like that‘s not a requirement this year. Let‘s take a look at what went down the runway.  Read more »
The only thing nastier than a hot pink, polyester bridesmaid gown is this season of Project Runway. Never before have we seen so many glaring eyes, heard so many put downs and now it seems to have spread throughout the whole cast! As if it wasn‘t hard enough making a wearable garment out of an old bridesmaid gown, now they have to do it with knives in their backs? Et tu, Project Runway! Et tu! Read more »
It‘s plain from the waiting room reactions of the contestants that they‘re surprised by who landed in the top and bottom on Project Runway these last few weeks. I‘m with them. The judges are picking the oddest, drabbest outfits for the top slots and they keep over-looking the real talent in the bunch. Let‘s take a look at last night‘s designs and then you tell me if you think the judges got it right.  Read more »
Competing on Project Runway is no day at the beach, but that was the mindset required this week as the designers were asked to create resort wear. To make the challenge extra hard, each designer had to turn their work over to another contestant for the actual construction phase. Friendships were forged and one designer nearly talked herself into a ticket home.  Read more »
Score one for Tim Gunn. As if you needed another reason to love the silver fox, check out what he had to say about his experience working with the infamous Taylor Momsen on the set of Gossip Girl.In a recent interview with E! Tim Gunn had some powerful words for the lead singer of Pretty Reckless. He said: "What a diva! She was pathetic, she couldn‘t remember her lines, and she didn‘t even have that many. I thought to myself ‘why are we all being held hostage by this brat?‘" He went on to say: "She was on her phone during every break, I wanted to tell her, ‘If you weren‘t on your BlackBerry, you can retain this stuff.‘" Read more »
This week‘s episode of Project Runway was supposed to be an homage to the sophisticated, fashion forward thinking Jackie Kennedy. Not so much. Maybe these designers are all too young to understand. Where‘s Peach when you need her? Here‘s a look at the fashions from this week‘s very dull runway show.  Read more »
When it comes to iconic women, there‘s no one more sleek and sophisticated than our former First Lady, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Jackie O was always fashion forward and elegant even when dressed for a casual outing at the beach or bicycling with her kids in Central Park. And while most designers can turn out an expensive ballgown, it takes a lot of talent to make sportswear look rich and classic and that was the challenge on this week‘s Project Runway.  Read more »
L‘Oreal ponied up the prize for this week‘s challenge on Project Runway, the starring role in a Marie Claire advertorial and a check for $20,000 which was probably required so they didn‘t break any union rules with the shoot. The task was to create a high fashion look that exemplified one of their 5 types of eye shadow, matte, crystal, metallic, bright or velvet. The designers were given a budget of $300 dollars and two whole days to finish their creation. Yeah! Or not. This is Project Runway, after all.  Read more »
Contestants, this will be a high stakes quick fire! L‘Oreal dangled a $20,000 carrot in front of the designers this week in order to get them to create two looks for a new eyeshadow "advertorial." That‘s those pages in a magazine that seem like articles but are actually thinly veiled advertisements. Flip through an upcoming Marie Claire and you‘ll see Mondo in his shiny Beatles suit celebrating his win. Here‘s how he got there.  Read more »
Have you seen the 30-second preview for the Thursday, Sept. 30 episode of Project Runway? If not, I say, prepare yourself. There‘s a scream! An "Oh my god!" Sirens! (Sirens?) A scary closeup of pins falling very, very slowly! Mondo crying! Andy crying! Scandal! Cheating! Intrigue!Watch for yourself, and then let‘s discuss:  Read more »
As the fashion director for Marie Claire and a judge on Project Runway, Nina Garcia has seen it all when it comes to personal style. You could say she‘s seen the good, bad and the "unfortunate." That‘s why she‘s authored a new book that helps even those with horrible fashion sense look polished and put together. The book is called Nina Garcia‘s Look Book, What to Wear for Every Occasion. Whether you‘re headed to a job interview or an office party, a blind date or a Broadway play, Nina‘s book outlines the perfect outfit to wear. Read more »
The newest clip from this week‘s Project Runway sheds a little more light on the crying and the secrets that have been hinted at in earlier clips. Read more »
I wouldn‘t call this week‘s episode of Project Runway depressing but ... who am I kidding, it was as depressing as all get-out! It was like Dr. Phil and Oprah were the writers on this one and I didn‘t appreciate it one bit. Yes, there was a startling and emotional moment but that didn‘t save this one from the fast forward finger.  Read more »
Michael Kors summed up this week‘s episode of Project Runway by saying, "Fashion is not for sissies." You could roll your eyes at the irony of the fact that the show was filled with tears from beginning to end, but he‘s right. It‘s a tough business and you have to be able to take the hard knocks, the criticism and the money troubles in order to get to the top.   Read more »
"If you can‘t say anything nice, don‘t say anything at all." If the designers of Project Runway had followed the advice of Thumper‘s father, this would have been a mighty quiet episode. The criticisms and nasty remarks were flying faster than Peter Pan on his way to rescue Wendy, and finally we got to the bottom of that cheating accusation that they‘ve been flaunting all season.   Read more »
Your first job interview. Dinner with your boyfriend‘s parents. The office Christmas party. Life is full of events. Some affect what happens tomorrow, others change your life forever. Whatever the event, it‘s important to look your best and be your best, and Nina Garcia is here to help. Her new "Look Book: What to Wear for Every Occasion" isn‘t just a style guide, it‘s a life guide that is a must own for any young woman working her way up in the world. Read more »
It was the last challenge before Fashion Week on Project Runway and so it was fitting that the designers pay homage to the city that housed them all these weeks. New York, New York was the theme, but they might as well have called it A Study in Black. It was another dull, colorless runway show in a whole season of dull shows but who made it into the final? Once again, four and not three.  Read more »
This may have been the most outlandish season of Project Runway but there were no surprises in this, the second to the last episode. Mondo, Michael C, Andy and Gretchen were all sent home to create a 10-piece collection but only three would make it to Fashion Week. Who made it through? Let‘s take a look.  Read more »
Since the beginning, Project Runway has always sent the final three to compete with a complete collection at Fashion Week. But in the last few seasons, they‘ve allowed four designers to create a collection, only to eliminate one of them right before the big show. Personally, I think this is horribly cruel. It‘s one thing to be eliminated after a weekly challenge but to pour your life into a collection, six weeks of work and all that stress for nothing? I think that‘s why Michael C was so devastated when he was sent home last night. It truly is the worst elimination spot on the series.  Read more »
Instead of offering up a final episode followed by a gossipy reunion show, Project Runway decided to load it all in to a slow moving two-hour finale that would have been better served with a tight edit. The highlight of the evening was the series of Fairy JobMother promos that featured Haley Taylor trying to teach the eliminated designers how to find work. Though written with tongue-firmly-in-cheek, there were enough grains of truth in these short skits to make them even more telling than the civil reunion that started the show.  Read more »
By now you‘ve heard the news. Gretchen is the winner of Project Runway and from the reaction around the net, it would appear that she‘s the only one happy about it. Gretchen was an early favorite, but through the weeks her designs began to look the same and not long ago, the judges suggested that she‘d run out of steam. Gretchen herself said she was just tired of the challenges. Yeah, that‘s the spirit of a winner.  Read more »
Supermodel/Project Runway Host Heidi Klum is trading whiny, sometimes witty designers for whiny, routinely witty kiddos in her new show Seriously Funny Kids, premiering Feb. 1 on Lifetime. The show is reminiscent of Bill Cosby‘s Kids Say the Darndest Things and is in fact executive produced by one of the men behind Cosby‘s show.     I had a chance to take part in a conference call with Heidi in which she very candidly talked about the show, mommyhood and her "hot and sexy" husband, Seal.      Read more »
Kids -- they seriously say the funniest things. Sometimes you just want to hang around them with a tape recorder in your pocket. But we won‘t have to, thanks to Lifetime‘s newest series. Hosted by Project Runway‘s Heidi Klum, the unscripted comedy Seriously Funny Kids shows us the whimsical and often hilarious world of children‘s words. Every half-hour will be bursting with laughs as the supermodel interacts with kids. Often insightful and even a bit inspiring, the program gives us a peek into the minds of our country‘s future.Heidi Klum: ‘I Used to Pee in My Pants A Lot‘  Read more »
With only six designers left and an extra half hour to fill, Project Runway asked each of them to make three complete looks this week. The looks needed to fit in with Heidi‘s line of active wear clothes from and to make it harder, they were each saddled with a bitter, former contestant as an assistant. What a week!  Read more »
