The fall of 2005 was a good season for comedy on TV. How I Met Your Mother premiered on CBS and the second season of The Office (aka the first good season) was on NBC. Six years later both shows are still on the air, and Im sorry to report that its a bad thing.Out of blind loyalty I still watch The Office and How I Met Your Mother, but now its more of a chore than a treat. These once-great comedies have lost their luster, and while I wish they were just not as good as they once were, Im afraid the truth is much worse. These shows are just plain bad.

This weeks episode had a fair amount of both comedic and dramatic moments, though I think the strength lied with the latter, particularly in tying up the Ted-Robin aftermath and ending a much-needed plot point for Lily and Marshall.

ABC, FOX and the CW have already announced their season finale dates for this year, and now CBS is helping fans plan out their May by announcing end dates for all of its shows. This includes an early April finale for The Good Wife and a one-hour How I Met Your Mother season finale that will reveal the identity of Barneys bride.

With the recent introduction of Quinn (played by Becki Newton) in Barneys life, we cant help but wonder if she is his bride-to-be (the producers have confirmed Barneys future wife will be revealed in this seasons finale in a flash-forward to his wedding). How I Met Your Mother has always used structure as a narrative tool (the million-dollar-question "Who is the mother?" is built into the series title), and the goal post of Barneys wedding is no exception. Not only will Barneys bride be made known, but we may also finally meet the Mother (at the start of season 6, the meeting place was confirmed to be Barneys wedding). With all these monumental reveals coming up, we cant help but try to put the pieces together (with the help of some finale teasers).

Last nights episode relied heavily on one of the shows favorite plot devices: flashbacks and flash-fowards. Based on the premise that, starting in 2000, Ted and Marshall have "trilled" it up every three years (i.e. watched the entire Star Wars trilogy in one sitting), the episode flashbacked to four points in the gangs history, then to the present (2012) before one final flash-forward to 2015. Not only did the story flash to certain time periods, it also showed Ted, Marshall and Barneys predictions for what their lives would be like every three years (i.e. there were twice the amount of flashes to include the hypothetical ones). Sound confusing? Heres the breakdown:

The solid cast of How I Met Your Mother has been portraying our beloved gang of five since the show premiered in 2005. Currently in its seventh season (renewed for an eighth), both the actors and their characters have come a long way. Specifically, the success of the CBS sitcom has created exciting opportunities for these versatile actors, from hosting gigs to superhero film roles. Heres where you can currently catch the gang outside their weekly appearances at MacLarens.

This weeks episode seemed full of themes weve seen many times on HIMYM: Barney dragging along Ted to create legendary moments, Marshall fretting about Lily (and her cheating sex dreams) and Robin feeling frustrated with her job (despite a big promotion). Sometimes it feels like nothing changes on this show (which can be good or bad). But despite some familiar plots, there were a few small ways in which the narrative was pushed forward that made this episode worth it. Plus, we saw the return of Ranjit!

This weeks episode was clearly a building up for the two-episode finale on May 14 (there will be no new episodes airing next week), with three central relationships coming to important developments. While its difficult to glean what this will mean for the events in the finale, the episode itself was an enjoyable return to form (i.e. Ted trying to get over Robin and the return of the ducky tie).

Last night marked one of the best How I Met Your Mother season finales to date. With all the anticipation, particularly surrounding the identity of Barneys bride and if the Mother would finally be revealed, it was hard to imagine a conclusion that would be truly satisfying. Thankfully, the MacLarens gang of five managed to conclude season 7 in a wonderful way that delivered on all three story lines (the birth of Marshall and Lilys child, the outcome of Barney and Quinn - and his future bride, and Teds never-ending quest for love).

Warning: major season 7 finale spoilers ahead!Yes, last nights season finale answered some important questions (Who is Barneys bride?), but it also left us with a lot of open-ended ones for next season (Whats going to happen with Ted and Victoria? How will Barney transition from being engaged to Quinn to marrying Robin?). Though hes not giving away all their tricks, co-creator Craig Thomas was willing to share some interesting tidbits for next (and potentially the last) season.
