Articles for Glee Season 3

Something miraculous happened over the summer on Glee: the show became great again. I was hard on season 2, as were many critics, because it got too serious and too preachy. But the Glee season 3 premiere was all fun while setting up some great storylines for the future. SlideshowBest ‘Glee‘ Quotes from the Season 3 Premiere Read more »
Zooey Deschanel is officially a star. The Tuesday night ratings are in and her new comedy, New Girl, earned over 10 million viewers, beating its high-profile lead-in, Glee. The show‘s ratings are an amazingly strong start to a show that critics have been raving about. In fact, despite the fact that New Girl was beaten in total viewers by Dancing with the Stars and NCIS: Los Angeles, it was the highest-rated show of the night in the key 18-49 demographic.  Read more »
The Glee season 3 premiere introduced a new and potentially lucrative new storyline for the show. In addition to competing for another chance at Nationals, McKinley is mounting a production of West Side Story for the sole purpose of upping Rachel Berry‘s stage credits.  Read more »
The ratings for the Glee season 3 premiere were down from last year, which is a tragedy. Yes, I was one of the critics who piled on about how awful Glee‘s second season was, but I was pleased to find out that the writers and producers had listened to the complaints and come back better than ever. Even more impressively, the second episode, "I Am Unicorn," is even better than the premiere.  Read more »
William Shakespeare wrote that "The course of true love never did run smooth," and those words are applicable to every single character and relationship on Glee. Now the show is adding a new twist with a new character who has his sights set on coming between Blaine and Kurt.According to TVLine, TV newcomer Grant Gustin will play Sebastian, a gay Dalton Warbler who is after Blaine. TVLine reports that a source from Glee calls it a "major role" and that he will be a villain for season 3. He will be introduced in the fifth episode.  Read more »
Glee is a unicorn. It started out as a show that was magical and knew it, but then in season 2 it started pooping cotton candy and lost its horn. Thankfully season 3 has rediscovered that magic and now the show is once again a magical, fabulous unicorn.  Read more »
There‘s a lot going on at McKinley in the third season of Glee. There are two elections, two glee clubs, a production of West Side Story, a brewing custody battle and many students planning for college. But amid all of that, I‘m focused on Blaine‘s wardrobe. In season 2, Kurt‘s boyfriend was a Warbler and, as such, was stuck in his Dalton Academy uniform for nearly every episode. Now that he‘s at McKinley, however, he‘s free to dress however he wants, and that unfortunately involves lots of bow ties.  Read more »
Things are getting dramatic on Glee. I loved the first two episodes of season 3, and while "Asian F" has some fantastic plot developments and great moments for the characters, particularly Mercedes, it all feels a little too melodramatic for my taste. Luckily, unbelievably amazing performances from Brittany, Mercedes and, shockingly, Mike Chang help out a lot.  Read more »
We‘re only three episodes into Glee‘s third season and it‘s already been a tumultuous journey for New Directions. In the premiere, Sam, Lauren and Quinn all quit while Santana was kicked out and Blaine joined the group. Then Quinn rejoined, and, in this week‘s episode, Santana came back (thus totally negating the first episode).  Read more »

It‘s already week 6 of Dancing with the Stars season 13? Where does the time go? And where do the competitors go, for that matter? It seems like only yesterday when we had 12 fresh-faced celebrities hitting the dance floor. Now, alas, there are but 7 remaining. Who will be next? We‘ll find out in the next couple of days, but now it‘s time to take a look at what‘s to come for week 6. Read more »

After the annoying baseball preemption, Glee finally returns with new episodes November 1, and the episode marks the arrival of Glee‘s newest student, Rory Flanagan. Faith and begorrah, Glee is back! After an interminably long break due to stupid baseball, McKinley High is once again in session. It‘s almost hard to remember the last time we saw New Directions, when Mercedes defected to Team Shelby and Rachel threw her hat into the presidential ring because she‘s the worst person in the world who refuses to let Kurt be happy (see: trying to steal Blaine in "Blame It on the Alcohol").The return of Glee also brings a new face, Rory Flanagan, an Irish exchange student played by The Glee Project co-winner Damian McGinty. So let‘s open up this box of Lucky Charms and see if it‘s magically delicious or terrifying like that movie with Jennifer Aniston and Warwick Davis.  Read more »
Glee is like a rollercoaster, and I‘m sitting backwards. The show jumps between genres and storylines so quickly that fans might be able to lodge a class-action lawsuit against the creators for whiplash. However, the most infuriating part for me is that, when I enjoy an episode, the general consensus on the Internet seems to be it wasn‘t very good. And when I hate an episode (like I did with "Asian F"), people seem to think it‘s one of the best episodes ever.  Read more »
A good, ol‘ boy is coming to Glee. According to TVLine, Dukes of Hazzard star John Schneider is coming to Glee as the formerly out-of-work father of Chord Overstreet‘s Sam Evans. Overstreet returns in December.  Read more »
This week Glee is exploring teenage sexuality with "The First Time," an episode all about Rachel, Blaine and Kurt contemplating taking a big step in their respective relationships. It doesn‘t affect Finn that much as you‘ll remember he gave his virginity to Santana in the Madonna episode.  Read more »
The people have spoken, and this year‘s nominees for the People‘s Choice Awards are an interesting mix of popular programs and CW favorites.  Read more »
Last week I wrote about how much I love it when Glee does zany, absurdist comedy (like Brittany believing in leprechauns) and how much I hate the earnest, teenage melodrama. So naturally, this week‘s episode of Glee, "The First Time," infuriates me on a grand scale. The entire episode plays like a serious teen soap about having sex for the first time, with everyone behaving wildly out of character and making some of the world‘s worst decisions.  Read more »
In Glee‘s upcoming 50th episode, "Mash Off," the show will feature its 300th musical performance. That‘s a lot of songs, and the newly formed Troubletones, featuring Mercedes and Santana, get the honor of taking on song #300 with a mash-up of Adele‘s "Rumor Has It" and "Someone Like You."  Read more »
This week Saturday Night Live did a sketch about how people love listening to Adele‘s "Someone Like You" so they can have a good, cathartic cry. Glee ended this week with a mash-up of that song and Adele‘s "Rumour Has It," and if it didn‘t reduce you to tears, you‘re not human.  Read more »
This week‘s Glee cut Santana to her emotional core as her lesbian feelings for Brittany became public knowledge courtesy of a political ad from one of Sue‘s rivals. Slowly but surely, Naya Rivera has become the best thing about Glee, and her performance in "Mash Off" is the proof. Her sadness during the climactic Adele mash-up was the best bit of acting the show has ever seen and turned a ridiculousl storyline into something magical.  Read more »
The return of Sam Evans to Glee is almost here. Chord Overstreet makes his triumphant return to the series on Tuesday, December 6, and FOX has released the official synopsis that provides details about how he returns.  Read more »

For three seasons, Rachel has been a goody two-shoes and Santana has been the Head Bitch in Charge in Glee. But this week, they swap roles, and we see the softer side of Santana and the bad girl inside Rachel. Also, Burt wins the election, so I guess he‘s a Congressman now. But that doesn‘t seem to matter.  Read more »

This Tuesday Glee is heading to Sectionals and for the second year in a row, Rachel Berry won‘t be featured. While she‘s sitting in the audience, New Directions and the Troubletones will do battle on stage. There‘s also another group, but let‘s be honest, they‘re not gonna win. For that matter, there‘s no way the Troubletones will win either.  Read more »
This season‘s big tribute episode of Glee has finally been revealed, and the artist getting the honor is Michael Jackson. According to TVGuide, the late King of Pop‘s music will take center stage in the January 24 episode, which will feature up to a dozen different Jackson songs.Jackson will become the fourth musician to get honored with his own Glee episode, following Madonna in season 1 and Britney Spears and Fleetwood Mac in season 2.  Read more »
This week, it‘s Sectionals on Glee, and it wraps up almost all of the storylines of season 3. And by "wraps up," I mean completely erases them. Mike Chang gets his father‘s respect back, Quinn finally appears to be over her plot to destroy Shelby and the Troubletones are disbanded so Santana, Brittany and Mercedes can rejoin New Directions. With the return of Sam, it‘s kind of like the first seven episodes of the season never even happened.  Read more »
You need to watch these videos. This week‘s Community, "Regional Holiday Music," is the show‘s Christmas episode. It‘s a musical. A musical that parodies Glee. The result is an absolutely astounding romp through lyrical insanity. And the videos featured in this article -- which include a Danny Pudi/Donald Glover rap about Christmas espionage -- show just how gloriously crazy the holidays can be on Community.Note to extremely observant readers: Earlier, this was a video that featured Alison Brie‘s Annie singing to Joel McHale‘s Jeff. For reasons unknown, NBC has removed that video and replaced it with a selection of related footage. If you missed the earlier one, do keep an eye out for it when Community airs on Thursday at 8pm. You won‘t be sorry. Read more »
Glee fans, be warned: Community‘s Christmas episode is coming for your show. And not even Sue Sylvester has ever mounted an attack so hilarious and so devastating. The brilliant NBC comedy (Thursday at 8pm) is staging a very long parody of the FOX musical sensation, and it perfectly mocks everything wrong with Glee.  Read more »
The floodgates have opened on Glee‘s stunt casting for season, and it looks like they can‘t be closed. Following this summer‘s decree from the producers that the show would avoid celebrity stunt casting this season, that trend broke first with the news that Ricky Martin would be playing a new Spanish teacher at McKinley and Gloria Estegan will play Santana‘s mom.  Read more »
The Glee Christmas special is not for cynics. If, like me, you have a lump of coal where your heart should be, prepare to face an onslaught of Christmas cheer and do-goodery.Check out two of the songs from the episode and see if you‘re heart grows three sizes or if you‘re dead inside like I am.  Read more »
Christmas has been replaced by Opposite Day on Glee this year. In one of the most absurdly entertaining episodes of the year, Sue becomes the moral voice of reason while the kids of New Directions become selfish Grinches. Throw in random references to Chewbacca, Judy Garland and a reading from the Bible and you have the trippiest Christmas special ever.  Read more »
I tried extra hard this week to channel the holiday spirit and find things to love about Glee‘s Christmas special. And to be fair, I thought Sue was great, as was the Sam-Rory subplot. But overall, the episode was a total mess.  Read more »

I‘ve been quite hard on Glee for reneging on its promise to avoid celebrity stunt casting this season with Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin, Pitbull and NeNe Leakes, but I‘m willing to make an exception. According to TVLIne, Oscar winner and smoking hot senior citizen Helen Mirren will be lending her voice to the series for one episode.  Read more »
This year‘s Christmas episode from Glee season 3 was jam-packed with musical numbers from start to finish for a total of nine songs (there‘s even more on the soundtrack). With that many songs in one episode, were you completely Glee‘d out or hoping for more? Rachel and Rory each got solos at one point. Were you hoping that Santana would have her moment in the spotlight as well? Here‘s your chance to watch a deleted scene of her singing "Santa Baby" from "Extraordinary Merry Christmas." Read more »
Earlier this month, it was confirmed that Glee season 3‘s one and only tribute episode would be devoted to the music of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. This comes on the heels of other tribute episodes over the past two years including Madonna, Britney Spears and Fleetwood Mac‘s Rumours album. The producers had been hinting at this announcement for quite a while, saying they were trying to secure the rights to the songs. Read more »

Last summer was a tense time in the world of Glee. Creator Ryan Murphy said that many of the main characters, including Rachel, Finn and Kurt, would be graduating at the end of season 3. And he went even further by saying that they would be leaving the show. Then there was the awkward backtracking where he and other producers and FOX said this wasn‘t true, Murphy said these things prematurely, etc. Read more »
Over the weekend at TCA winter tour, FOX announced and confirmed that there would be no Glee spin-off show and that the graduating characters (or at least most of them) will be staying put on Glee. Creator Ryan Murphy has apparently come up with some "revolutionary" idea that will allow them to stay on. Read more »
Like most TV critics, my favorite hobby of 2011 was picking on Glee. The show that came out of the gate with style and flare began to flounder last year. Stories became too dramatic and serious, songs became too old-fashioned and plots meandered. The show lost its way.  Read more »

Here we go again, Gleeks! Ryan Murphy changes his mind yet again when he said that there would only be one tribute episode this season. It has already been confirmed that the January 31 episode would pay tribute to the music of Michael Jackson. When we believed there would only be one, I was excited that they decided to go with the King of Pop. And if they‘re only doing one, then why not him, right? Read more »
The first Glee of 2012 was titled "Yes/No," and that seems appropriate since half of it made me say "Yes!" with delight while the other half had me shaking my head, muttering "No." There was some fun, light-hearted entertainment courtesy of Will‘s sudden desire to propose to Emma and Sam‘s quest to get Mercedes back. But, in the words of Artie describing Rachel‘s performance, parts were "a little overwrought for my taste."  Read more »

Today the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and the NAACP both announced their annual awards nominations. While there are several gay and African-American characters on TV, these awards usually highlight the lack of diversity by picking out such obscure nominees. Hola, los Gleekos! It‘s time for a little Spanish flavor courtesy of guest star Ricky Martin. The Glee writers FINALLY remembers that Mr. Schuester is a Spanish teacher, which sets off a huge role for Martin as night school Spanish teacher David Martinez. And before I get any complaints, the grammatical error in the headline of this recap is intentional, an ode to Will‘s inability to comprehend the Spanish language.  Read more »
This week Glee introduced a potential long-term storyline: Sue having a baby. Sure, it came out of nowhere and Sue spent the entire episode having to defend her vagina‘s ability to actually do it, but is it really any more absurd than Kurt‘s dad deciding to run for Congress and winning less than two months later?  Read more »
It‘s been no surprise that both ratings and music sales for Glee season 3 have not as high as they used to be. Season 2 may not have been as well received by the fans and critics, but the emphasis on modern pop songs helped the show stay on the charts, including on iTunes. Season 3, on the other hand, has included a mix of both modern and older material as well. With not as many eyeballs glued to their TV sets watching Glee, it‘s obvious that not as many will be downloading the music either. Read more »

Welcome to this week‘s Music Show Battle! Two weeks ago, on a whim, I posted an article about how every single singing show (American Idol, The Voice, Glee, etc) performed Gotye‘s "Somebody That I Used to Know" in the same week. The following week it was Adele‘s "Rolling in the Deep" that became the de facto song of the week. It became obvious to me that this should be a regular feature, since every week at least two shows use the same song.  Read more »
