Showtime may be dominated by female-driven comedies, but now its time for the men to take center stage. Weeds, The Big C, Nurse Jackie and United States of Tara are all great, but now Showtime has paired two male-centric comedies, the sex-fueled David Duchovny series Californication and the Matt LeBlanc TV insider comedy Episodes.

In 2005 Desperate Housewives was the hot new show on TV and it earned 15 Emmy nominations for its first season, but despite a ton of buzz, it failed to win the award for Outstanding Comedy Series. The following year, amid much criticism that the show was too dramatic and serious, it was surprisingly dropped from the Comedy Series race and only picked up seven nominations.I mention this story at the start of my predictions for this years Emmy nominations for Comedy because it seems eerily similar to Glee. The show had a ton of buzz for its first year, didnt win for Outstanding Comedy Series, and now, with criticism about its overly dramatic second season, theres a chance it too could be left out in the cold.

The 2011 Emmy nominations were announced today, and as expected, last years big winners, Mad Men and Modern Family, are the most nominated drama and comedy with 19 and 17 nominations, respectively. However, the nominees this year include a number of very pleasant surprises and big totals for HBOs freshman dramas Boardwalk Empire (18 nominations) and Game of Thrones (13 nominations).

Unfortunately, Ricky Gervais wasnt the high point in this years Golden Globe Awards. His return to the show saw the Brit comedians quips neutered, despite his best attempts to really rip the Hollywood establishment apart. Sure, there was his F-bomb, and there was his pretty good take on Natalie Portmans pregnancy causing a nomination drought, but it was the establishment -- Madonna and Colin Firth, specifically -- who properly ripped into Ricky.Not that Im a heartless guy. The Golden Globes clearly loved the new shows of 2011. For this years Golden Globe Awards, 11 different shows that premiered this year scored major nominations, including Showtimes Homeland which scored three noms and FOXs New Girl which picked up two.
