Articles for Criminal Minds Season 7

FOX put a lot of time and money into The X Factor, Simon Cowell‘s new singing competition show that he promises is nothing like American Idol, and when it comes to the ratings, he‘s right. The show got off to a slow start averaging just over 12 million viewers over its two-hour premiere.By comparison, American Idol‘s latest season premiered with over 26 million viewers and stayed above 20 million all season. In addition, The X Factor also did worse than America‘s Got Talent and was about on par with the premiere of The Voice. For The X Factor to do less than half that while giving away a $5 million prize is a bad start if FOX wants it to be the new face of the network. This looks like it could be a one-and-done experiment that goes horribly wrong.  Read more »

Criminal Minds fans: Do you remember when showrunner Erica Messer teased that one of the agents would be getting a new love interest this season? Well, the speculation can now cease. Former Dirty Sexy Money star Bellamy Young will play Beth, a museum curator who will run into Hotch (Thomas Gibson) while he is training for a triathlon. Earlier this year, Messer spoke about wanting the widower to get a fresh start after the death of his ex-wife and first love Haley (Meredith Monroe), back in season 5. Messer also said that Hotch has been ‘going through the motions‘ for a while now and she would like to see him smile once again. From their flirtatious banter to their over-protectiveness, Morgan and Garcia just get each other. Last season on Criminal Minds, Emily Prentiss died. Yes, her death was merely faked so she could go into hiding, but the impact of that loss was still felt by everyone on the team. Though they have all seemingly moved on from Prentiss‘ false demise, I believe there are still issues bubbling under the surface for these characters and I think we will see the continued effect of Emily‘s "demise" for some time to come.Enter to win Criminal Mind prizes in our Trivia ChallengeMorgan (Shemar Moore) was one of the hardest hit by Emily‘s death and he carried around a lot of guilt when he thought she was gone -- guilt that he channeled into a vendetta against Ian Doyle (Timothy V. Murphy), the man who took her life. Though Morgan eventually learned that his friend was still alive and she worked with the team to bring Doyle down, the lingering effects of her death are still fresh in Morgan‘s mind. Earlier this season, we saw Morgan ask Emily if she would let him train her for re-certification because he wanted to make sure he would not have to worry about losing her in the field ever again. Though his concern was understandable, it makes you wonder if he would be able to handle seeing her killed in the line of duty a second time, a risk that all of the agents take whenever they go out into the field.  Read more »

Criminal Minds has seen several cast changes over its seven-year run, and though MandyPatinkin was not the first actor to leave the series, his exit sent shockwaves through the fan baseand shocked his cast mates. As Jason Gideon, Patinkin was the show‘s leading man and one ofthe most well-known cast members at the start of the series. For the first two seasons, Gideonwas the wise man of the group, the one who had seen and done it all. His fellow team membersoften looked to Gideon for insight into the cases, drawing on his vast experience in the science ofprofiling. After Patinkin‘s departure, Joe Mantegna‘s David Rossi was brought in to partially fillGideon‘s shoes, at least as the team member with the most experience. Read more »

As I pointed out in my article discussing Mandy Patinkin‘s exit from the series, Criminal Minds has seen several cast changes over the years. The last actor to depart the series was season 6 regular Rachel Nichols. Nichols played Ashley Seaver, an agent-in-training when we met her. Ashley was brought in as a consultant on one of the BAU‘s cases because she had first-hand knowledge that could help catch the UnSub the team was searching for. Ashley was the daughter of a serial killer, and she used the experience of her childhood to help predict the UnSub‘s moves. After that case, Ashley asked if she could finish her remedial training with the unit and Prentiss (Paget Brewster) offered to be her training agent. She later joined the team as a rookie profiler, helping to fill the void left by JJ‘s (A.J. Cook) departure and Prentiss‘ presumed death.  Read more »
Criminal Minds fans can pinpoint the exact moment when the working relationship between Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster) and David Rossi (Joe Mantegna) became a true friendship. In the episode "Demonology," Prentiss opened up to Rossi about a very traumatic experience in her past. During an investigation into her friend‘s death, Prentiss was convinced her friend was murdered, despite evidence to the contrary. When Rossi asked Prentiss to explain why she believed her friend was killed, she told him about their connection as kids. Prentiss spoke about getting pregnant as a teenager and how her friend supported her through an abortion and made her feel loved. But Emily also felt a tremendous amount of guilt, as her friend first started questioning his beliefs and going down a bad path after he helped her. Emily‘s story cemented Rossi‘s belief that something more was going on, and the two worked together to find the man who killed Emily‘s friend. After bonding during that case, the two have shared a level of trust and intimacy all their own. Read more »

On tonight‘s 150th episode of Criminal Minds, a victim named Regina turns into an UnSub as she holds her former attacker hostage. The BAU gets called to Houston to investigate a string of women being attacked for a second time by a serial rapist referred to as the "Piano Man," a name he got for playing popular 80s songs during the assault. The team arrests a young man positively identified by one of the victims, but soon realize he is much too young to be the true rapist and is only a copycat. Using him as a source of information, the BAU tracks Regina to her house where Prentiss talks her down from murdering the Piano Man.In addition, Prentiss passes her final therapy session, much to Hotch‘s dismay. Having suffered pain of loss in the past, Hotch gives Prentiss advice, saying that one day she will no longer be able to avoid feeling what Doyle did to her, and when that day comes, she must promise to let him know. On the trip back home, a teary-eyed Prentiss tells Hotch she is "having a bad day". Here are the 10 best tweets about "Unknown Subject." Read more »

FBI Technical Analyst Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness) has been with the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) since the start of Criminal Minds, and quickly became a fan favorite. That could be due to her quirky, optimistic, friendly personality. Or her colorful, over-the-top sense of style, which is vastly different from the other agents. Or her tendency to serve as the show‘s comic relief with her flirtatious banter and fantastic one-liners. But I think Garcia‘s appeal mostly comes from the fact that she is the heart of the team and the character most affected by the cases the BAU takes on. Read more »

As we discussed in previous articles about castmembers exiting the series, Criminal Minds has seen several cast changes over the years. The first actor to leave the show was Lola Glaudini. Glaudini played Elle Greenaway, the team‘s resident expert on sex offender cases. Elle was introduced in the pilot episode, but did not join the BAU until episode 2. Elle‘s dry humor and dedication to the job made her a good fit for the team, and she had a close relationship with Morgan (Shemar Moore). Unfortunately, in the first season finale, Elle became the victim of an UnSub who attacked her in her own home. Though she survived and returned to work, Elle was never quite the same after her attack, and she wound up killing an UnSub when it looked like the man would get away with his crimes. Hotch (Thomas Gibson) tried to work with Elle so she could stay with the unit, but Elle resigned, unable to admit what she had done. She has not been seen since.  Read more »

However, the FBI invades the family‘s home and arrests the proper perpetrator. In closing, Hotchner completes his triathlon and introduces Jack to Beth. The relationship between Aaron Hotchner (Thomas Gibson) and Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster) did not get off to the best start. As we learned in Brewster‘s first episode, Hotch and Prentiss may have had a passing acquaintance because Hotch once worked for Emily‘s mother, Ambassador Prentiss. Yet, when Prentiss joined the BAU, Hotch had problems trusting her, believing that her assignment to the unit may have been politically-motivated. Though Emily explained her very negative views on politics, Hotch remained somewhat mistrustful of his newest agent. Everything changed in season three when Hotch figured out that Prentiss chose to resign from the team rather than give Strauss (Jayne Atkinson) information she could use against Hotch. By making that decision, Prentiss proved herself a loyal member of the team and someone Hotch could count on. Read more »

JJ figures out that the locations of the murders form a heart around Helen Garrett‘s home. The BAU presents a lecture in an undergraduate criminology class, telling the story of Hotch and Rossi‘s first case together. It all started in 1992 when the bodies of two women were found with their reproductive organs ripped out. The media frenzy spooked the UnSub and caused the case to go cold until 1997, when two more bodies were found, and then again in 2005. The Unsub, Thomas Yates, was finally caught in 2009, but remained completely silent until he called Rossi personally a year after his arrest. Rossi struck a deal with Yates to remove the death penalty and relocate him to the east coast in exchange for the names of all his victims. Every year on Rossi‘s birthday, he makes a trip to Yates and receives one more name. Today happens to be Rossi‘s birthday. Here are the top 10 tweets about "Profiling 101." Read more »

On the season seven finale of Criminal Minds, the BAU finds itself in a hostage situation. Having been called to a bank robbery, the team partners with Will LaMontagne, Jr. to identify and capture an illusive female serial killer masquerading as a bank robber. Prentiss receives information from her old Interpol boss about the woman‘s international history, along with a job offer to run Interpol‘s London office. After Will shoots one of the woman‘s partners, his brother, Chris, demands to speak with Will, but the FBI refuses to authorize it. Then Chris threatens to shoot a hostage every sixty seconds, so Will rushes into the bank. He is shot multiple times and wounded, but survives. The BAU soon approaches the building in attack, but the bank explodes. The woman, Chris, and Will escape, joined by one of the supposed hostages that is revealed to be the woman‘s longtime partner. The woman shoots Chris and shoves him out of the car, taking Will to pick up Henry for her to babysit while her partner uses Will and his credentials to enter a guarded train station. From a breadcrumb Will left her, JJ realizes the UnSub has gone after Henry, rushes to her house with Rossi, and shows off her martial arts skills to takes down the woman, finally identified as Izzy Rogers. Meanwhile, Prentiss finds Will strapped to a bomb and singlehandedly defuses it with her knowledge of the UnSub‘s story. In the end, Rossi organizes a wedding party for JJ and Will, while Prentiss tells Morgan that she has been thinking about leaving since she got back, and now is the time to do so. With the seventh season now at a close, I thought we could talk a bit about next season and some of the storylines/character developments we would like to see take place. Would you like to see one of the other agents mention Emily and what she has been up to since leaving the team? Or would you prefer the show leave that question unanswered and start season 8 without mentioning an update on Emily?  Read more »
