Articles for Bones Season 3

Emily Deschanel is undeniably one of the biggest stars in television today, what with her leading role on the FOX hit crime drama, Bones.  However, the 30-year-old actress claims she works hard not for the sake of gaining fame, but to make sure the show will continue to please viewers. “The only reason people do publicity is to get you more work or more diverse work.  I‘d never work with people whose goal is to make people famous,” Deschanel told the Los Angeles Times.  “I do my work, and I do things to help the show.  And promote the show -- I do want people to watch it!  My work is to be an actor.  The other stuff you have to learn how to swallow.  Some people do it for fame or whatever.  Which, you know, they usually get that.  But there‘s nothing to back it up.” Read more »
Bones is quickly becoming one of FOX‘s hottest commodities, providing procedural episodes for the network to fill in the gaps left by canceled shows.  One of the big reasons for Bones‘ success is the charm of star Emily Deschanel, who plays socially awkward forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan.  Paired with federal agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz), the two have an effortless chemistry that reminds viewers of the heyday of Mulder and Scully.Emily Deschanel spoke to BuddyTV at last weekend‘s FOX press junket.  She spoke about how her chemistry with Boreanaz has evolved, working with her father who directed an episode of Bones, and dressing up like Wonder Woman for an upcoming episode.  Below you will find a transcript and mp3 audio file of the interview. Read more »
Before David Boreanaz became the relatively simple-thinking, rough around the edges FBI agent Seeley Booth on FOX‘s Bones, he was best known to television audiences as the brooding vampire with a soul, Angel.  Originally meant as a charismatic adversary for Sarah Michelle Gellar‘s titular character on Angel‘s parent show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Boreanaz became a regular fixture on the program until series creator, Joss Whedon deemed him worthy of his very own vehicle. It‘s been three years since Angel concluded and went off the air.  Fans of the immortal series have been without their avenging hero for too long.  Alas, Angel aficionados can now rest in peace with the scheduled release of the complete, ultimate collector‘s edition DVD box set. Read more »
After hanging out at the FOX fall press junket in L.A. for a weekend, I came to one conclusion: Bones is awesome. It airs Tuesdays at 8pm on FOX, and though I‘d never seen an episode of the show when I interviewed the stars, I‘ve since become a fan.  At the press junket, the Bones cast was the nicest, coolest group of people at the whole event.  Leading that charge for me was Michaela Conlin.  As Angela Montenegro on Bones, she is the facial reconstruction specialist who is engaged to Dr. Jack Hodgins (TJ Thyne), though their wedding was stopped when it was discovered she‘s technically still married to a man she can‘t even remember.I spoke to Michaela a while back on the phone, and that interview can be found at the bottom of this article. More recently, I sat down with Michaela in L.A. and was pleased to discover she remembered me and the interview, so we got to catch up on how great her cast is and how the task of casting her husband is coming. Below you will find the mp3 audio file as well as the highlights of the interview. Read more »
Last week, Bones‘ third installment for its third season was part of FOX‘s Tuesday lineup that catapulted the network past the rest of the field in primetime ratings.  This, despite the fact that Bones itself lagged considerably behind NCIS in the 8-9pm time slot.  CBS‘ naval crime investigation drama lorded it over its competitors with 16.4 million viewers while Bones finished a distant runner up with just over half as many patrons at 8.5 million according to Nielsen Media Research. Despite the wide disparity between frontrunner NCIS and second-place Bones, the latter was actually up 7 percent from it‘s performance the week before.  Arguably one of the more engaging procedural series on television today, Bones continues to deliver with solid forensic storylines interlaced with subtly humorous or sentimentally moving personal situations.  Another draw for its followers is the chemistry among the actors and the characters, not the least being central figures Dr. Temperance Brennan and Agent Seeley Booth. Read more »
Last week, we mentioned that Bones herself, Emily Deschanel, would like to see her character and that of her co-star, David Boreanaz, get together at some point in their series.  However, she did say that the much awaited, highly anticipated eventual coupling must come at just the right time in order not to be detrimental to their show. This week, we have spoilers for tonight‘s episode entitled “The Secret in the Soil,” which should tickle the matchmaker in every Bones fan. Read more »
Last season I‘d never seen a single episode of Bones, now I‘m hooked. Part of it could be the wasteland that is the television landscape at 8pm on Tuesday evenings, or the promise of a serialized cannibal serial killer story arc, or the addition of Freaks and Geeks star John Francis Daley in a recurring role which begins tonight. While all of those are possible, the real reason is that I met the cast (minus David Boreanaz) a while back at the FOX fall press junket in Los Angeles, and they were pretty much the awesomest people you could hope to meet. Read more »
As part of FOX‘s Fall TV press junket in Los Angeles last week, we were lucky enough to receive an invite to the FOX Fall Eco-Casino party at trendy nightclub Area in West Hollywood.  Being a lowly internet writer, this was my first experience at a big-time Hollywood event.  They even had a red carpet (which I did not walk down; bloggers use the back entrance, out of sight from the real press), which was all flash bulbs and TV cameras.  Exciting stuff.  We were driven from our hotel to the club, dropped off at the press table, picked up our credentials and walked straight in.  It was sweet. Read more »
Last week, Bones fans got their first look at Dr. Larry Sweets, the incredibly FBI psychologist played by John Francis Daley. If you missed it, fear not, because they‘ll be plenty more chances to see him. Today FOX announced that Daley, previously listed as a recurring guest star, has been bumped up to a series regular. Read more »
This season‘s Bones has two of the show‘s lead characters, Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan and Agent Seeley Booth, undergoing psychiatric counseling, and this interesting plot development has made series star David Boreanaz quite happy, not only because it sets the show apart, but also makes the show more humorous. “These two have to go to therapy in order to deal with their everyday working lives, which I think is very funny, and that‘s never been seen on television, which I think is unique,” Boreanaz, who plays Booth, told the Boston Herald. Read more »
TJ Thyne has been a regular on FOX‘s Bones since the show debuted in 2005, but believe it or not, the 32-year-old actor spent the previous part of his career avoiding jobs that would have him playing the same character all year long, hence his numerous guest-star stints on several television programs.“I‘ve always resisted the whole ‘series regular‘ thing,” Thyne told  “Over the years I‘ve tested for so many shows and when I got to the studio test, I‘d pull myself out thinking, ‘I can‘t spend 6 years on a show playing the same character, I can‘t do it!…‘  To me, the idea of playing different [characters] in different genres was always what I wanted to do.” Read more »
Eric Millegan is making the leap from Bones to Broadway – well, not quite, but akin to it.  The boyish-looking 33-year old actor, who gives life to the geeky Dr. Zack Addy on the FOX crime drama, Bones, is set to make his cabaret singing debut early next month. While the New Jersey-born relative newcomer is best known to televiewers as the socially inexperienced but intellectually brilliant forensic anthropologist on Bones, not too many may be aware that he is, in fact, a musical degree holder from the University of Michigan. Read more »
It took just a little over two seasons but the much awaited romantic connection between Bones lead characters Dr. Temperance Brennan and Agent Seeley Booth finally took corporeal form last week via a first kiss.  Nearly two months ago, we reported on what Bones star Emily Deschanel thought about her character and that of David Boreanaz‘s getting together beyond a mere professional relationship. While she herself acknowledged that Bones should, in fact, pair up with Booth, she also pointed out the danger of consummating their chemistry too soon.  In many cases, when the lead characters of a show finally get together romantically, the sexual tension that adds to the program‘s draw eventually fizzles and leads to the series‘ downfall.  Fortunately for Bones, last week‘s liplock was delivered with just the right amount of thrill for eager viewers, without necessarily milking the onscreen chemistry to exhaustion. Read more »
Bad news for all Bones fans out there.  Apparently, FOX has decided to put off airing the remaining pre-strike episodes of the hit series until this spring.  This is a clear indication that the network is preparing itself for a prolonged writers‘ strike. Additionally, when Bones returns with the new episodes, fans will have to clear their Monday night schedule, as the show will be moving to that day‘s 8pm timeslot.  It will serve as a lead-in to FOX‘s new courtroom drama, Canterbury‘s Law, starring ER alum Julianna Margulies and Emmy-nominated actor Aidan Quinn (Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, Legends of the Fall).  The tandem kicks off on April 28, which marks the beginning of May sweeps. Read more »
Bones may be a hit procedural drama, but what attracted actor David Boreanaz to the show the most is its interesting array of characters. "[Bones] had a real face, it had identity to it,‘‘ Boreanaz said.  “It had an identity to each character, to each individual character, so it was because of the identity of those characters that I really responded to the material, rather than being the procedural stuff.” Read more »
Bones star David Boreanaz has been using his strike-imposed break to do some good. The 38-year-old actor recently participated in a celebrity hockey game at the Sundance Festival in Park City, Utah.  The game, hosted by former NHL star and future Hall of Famer Luc Robitaille and held at the Park City Ice Arena, was set up to raise money for Echoes of Hope, a nonprofit organization that Robitaille and his wife founded to help at-risk and emancipated foster children.  Tickets went for $40 a piece. "What better place to do it than in this brand new arena? With the film festival being at the same time we knew we‘d get the right crowd here," Robitaille said.  "It‘s been a lot of fun... The guys are having fun.  It‘s been a success." Read more »
FOX‘s Bones is entering cable territory next week, with TNT acquiring exclusive rights to the hit drama series.  According to Variety, neither the network nor distributor Twentieth TV would comment on license fees, but word is each episode costs around $400,000 to $450,000. The deal allows TNT to gain access to the multiply weekly airings of Bones in 2009‘s Fall TV season.  However, beginning on Tuesday, January 28, at 10pm, the network will also air the show as a weekly series, part of a clause that stipulates a repurposing of the episodes, starting with the show‘s 2005 premiere episode. Read more »

A month has passed since the WGA strike came to an end, and more and more shows are now returning to their sets to resume production on the current season.  For Bones executive producer Hart Hanson, going back to restart the hit procedural dramedy has been an emotional experience. "The moment I drove on the lot for the first time in three months, I got a little choked up,” Hanson told USA Today, adding that other members of the staff and crew are excited to be back as well. Read more »

Almost exactly a year from its originally intended airdate, the episode called “The Player Under Pressure” finally airs on Bones tonight.  This installment was actually scheduled for broadcast April 18 last year but had to be shelved temporarily in light of the story‘s similarity to real life events that occurred two days earlier. On April 16, 2007, a 23-year old English major opened fire on his teachers and schoolmates at Virginia Tech.  His sudden outburst of gunfire on the campus left 33 dead, including himself. It became the deadliest incident of mass shooting in the United States. Read more »
Unlike most forensic procedurals, Bones focuses more on the relationship between living people than its dead bodies.  This, according to lead actor David Boreanaz, is one of the reasons why the show has stayed fresh for many years.“For me, I‘ve always maintained that the show is about the relation.  It‘s about the characters, about the two of us [Seeley Booth and Temperance Brennan] learning through solving a crime," said Boreanaz, who isn‘t really fond of serial killer storylines. Read more »

Technically speaking, tonight‘s edition of Bones is the third original, post-strike episode to air since Bones returned April 14.  However, due to special extenuating circumstances, it‘s turned out more like the fourth, since “The Player Under Pressure,” which aired April 21, was actually an episode from the second season that was yanked from its original schedule in light of the Virginia Tech massacre.  As such, it became a quasi-original offering because it was broadcast for the very first time. Tonight‘s Bones entitled “The Verdict in the Story” features the return of veteran star, Ryan O‘Neal, back in his role as Temperance Brennan‘s (Emily Deschanel) father. Read more »
As with House, its network-mate on FOX, tonight‘s Bones is the penultimate episode in the current season, shortened by the three-month long writers‘ strike from November 2007 to February 2008.  American Idol‘s Ace Young and Brandon Rogers guest star in tonight‘s offering entitled “The Wannabe in the Weeds.”Here‘s a look at what tonight‘s Bones will look like, as well as snippets from an interview with star Emily Deschanel, conducted by USA Today. Read more »
