Biography

Philadelphia-born Rob McElhenney is known for his role in the FX sitcom It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Incidentally, he is also the program’s creator, director and writer. His initial foray into acting was a struggle; he took on all kinds of acting jobs for several years in order to support himself. Born on April 14, 1977, McElhenney began his career in 1997 with his film debut being a role in The Devil’s Own. He later received bit parts on Law & Order, and on 1998’s A Civil Action. He was next seen on Wonder Boys, as well as on Thirteen Conversations About One Thing.

In 2004, while Rob McElhenney was still waiting tables, his manager and his agent presented his sitcom idea to the FX network. He continued to act, produce and write for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, where he gained the most fame. His portrayal of Mac earned him praise, because the role required him to play a bad-tempered brute, a man loaded with attitude problems. Back in high school, Mac served as the source of marijuana to the other kids. He is presently forced to engage in heroin trafficking through the influence of his father, who is doing time in prison because of drugs. Mac appears to be particular in capturing the attention of women, and constantly worries over how to get to them.

McElhenney was also featured on the third season of the hit series Lost. He was made to appear on “Not in Portland,” since the actor had already befriended Damon Lindelof, the co-creator and executive producer of Lost. Lindelof told him that he was a fan of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, so he offered to give Rob a small role on Lost. Other credits attributed to McElhenney are substantial roles in 2003’s Latter Days and 2004’s The Tollbooth. He was also seen on Long Story Short and on an episode of ER titled “Where There’s Smoke.”
