Biography

Born on December 1, 1970 in San Francisco, California, Golden Brooks is known as a versatile performer. The American actress was a classically trained dancer before landing TV and film roles, and has studied and taught ballet, jazz, and modern dance. Furthermore, she was a competitive figure skater who won a number of trophies when she was younger. She has earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology, and got a concentration on “Media Representation on Minorities” from UC-Berkeley. While there, she majored in Theater and later earned a Master’s degree from Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers, New York. Golden was active in the Robey Theater Company, working with actors like Danny Glover.

During the late 1990s, she landed a role in the series The Adventures of Pete and Pete, portraying the character Heather in the episode “Crisis in the Love Zone.” Her next roles were in Drive by: A Love Story in 1997 and Hell’s Kitchen in 1998. She appeared on series like Promised Land and Linc’s, before landing the role of Onyx Richardson in the 2000 Mike Figgis drama Timecode. That year, she joined the cast of the CW sitcom Girlfriends, portraying the character Maya Wilkes. She is also credited for writing an episode of the series, titled “Snap Back,” featuring Erykah Badu. She also played her Girlfriends character on Moesha in 2001.

Some of Golden Brooks’ other appearances have been in The Parkers, The Jamie Foxx Show, Haunted, and Star Trek: Enterprise. She has starred in several movies as well, one of them with Queen Latifah in Beauty Shop. Her other big screen roles were in A Good Man Is Hard to Find, Something New, Motives with Shemar Moore, Asylum and Impostor. Brooks has also been featured in the music video for the song “Straight to the Bank,” by 50 Cent.
