Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale) is a sophomore at William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio on Fox's hit television show "Glee." Due to a car accident when he was only eight years old, Artie became a paraplegic and now uses a wheelchair. He joined the New Directions glee club along with friend Tina Cohen-Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz) in the pilot episode. He has a deep and soulful voice and performs many solos.
Artie develops several close relationships with other members of New Directions. By far the strongest one is with Tina, whom he develops romantic feelings for. Tina dumps Artie at the beginning of Season 2 to date Mike Chang (Harry Shum, Jr), a fellow New Directions member and football player. Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith) saves Artie from bullies who locked him in a portable bathroom in the pilot episode and they become friends. Artie is also close with Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley) and Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer)
In Season 2 Finn helps Artie join the football team. Artie also becomes friends with Noah "Puck" Puckerman (Mark Salling) when Puck returns to school from juvenile hall. They bond over girls, money and geometry. Trying to move on from Tina, Artie hooks up with Brittany Pierce (Heather Morris). At first it seems she is using him for his voice, but then he develops stronger feelings for her and they really connect. Brittany is Artie's first lover. Their relationship grows deeper when Brittany asks Santa for Artie to walk for Christmas in the episode "A Very Glee Christmas." Artie, Mike and Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet) band together to confront a bully picking on Kurt and end up getting in a fight.
Artie has many memorable performances in the first two seasons of "Glee." The first was his amazing solo piece "Dancing with Myself" which he sings during the episode "Wheels." Artie is upset with his fellow glee club members for their attitudes about not helping raise money for a handicap bus. New Directions then steps up and hosts a bake sale. Artie requests that the money raised be used for ramps around the school as he is not the only student who uses a wheelchair. The Glee Club then performs "Proud Mary" in wheelchairs in his honor.
In the episode "Dream On" the audience discovers that Artie's dream is to be a dancer. Tina convinces him that he should not give up his dream by giving him readouts on spinal cord injury studies. Artie performs "Safety Dance" during a dream sequence where he gets up out of his wheelchair and dances. Later in the episode he becomes disappointed after meeting with Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays) the school counselor, who tells him that the research will take years to complete.
"The more times she storms out of rehearsal, the less impact it has."
"Puck, with respect, you're more helpful when you don't contribute."
"We plan on smacking them down like the hand of God."
"I'm gonna stop you. You had me at sex tape."
