Biography

Award-winning American actress Elizabeth Hubbard was born on December 22, 1933 in New York City. The cousin of the lat Christopher Reeve, she graduated with summa !$#!# laude honors at Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and later moved to London to pursue acting training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. She holds the distinction of being the first American to be awarded the school’s silver medal.

Hubbard is known for her roles in numerous daytime soap operas. In 1962, she debuted on Guiding Light, playing the role of Anne Fletcher until the character was killed off later in the year. The following year, she played the role of Carol Kramer in The Edge of Night. The year after that, she joined the daytime soap The Doctors, where she played doctor Althea Davis. She played the role throughout the show’s run, until it was cancelled in 1982, save for a break in 1969 (when Virginia Vestoff took over then role) and in 1978. Her performance earned her the first Daytime Emmy for Best Drama Actress.

After the cancellation of The Doctors, Hubbard joined the daytime soap One Life to Live, playing the short-lived role of Estelle Chadwick. In 1984, she joined the cast of As the World Turns, in what is perhaps her most known role. She originated, and still plays, the character of Lucinda Walsh, a no-nonsense businessman whose fiery streak has not been diminished by her loving nature as a mother and grandmother. She left the show in 1999 because of creative disagreements, although she later returned after a few months.

Hubbard also has played several roles on prime time television, snagging guest roles in Hope & Faith, Law & Order and The Job. She has also appeared on several films, including I Never Sang for My Father, Cold River and The Treatment. Apart from her Daytime Emmy for The Doctors, she won another such award in 1976 for her role in the one-off drama First Ladies Diaries: Emily Watson.
