Biography

Debra Mooney was born August 28, 1947 in Aberdeen, South Dakota. She is married to Porter Van Zandt, a well-known stage producer and director. Mooney herself has an extensive theater background including a memorable turn as Blanche Dubois in Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire. While attending the University of Minnesota as a graduate student, Mooney landed the role of Blanche and was onstage when Tennessee Williams made a surprise visit to watch the performance. So impressed was Williams with Mooney’s rendition that he called her his favorite Blanche and wrote about her in The New York Times with rave reviews: “I have recently seen Blanche played with great wit and pathos by a young actress named Debra Mooney at the University of Minnesota. She made me howl with laughter at my own work.”

Edna Harper, played by Debra Mooney on Everwood, is the outspoken and unconventional mother of the town’s resident doctor, Harold Abbott. Recently married to town school bus driver, Irv, Edna is currently reveling in her newfound second shot at love and happiness. Never one to mince words or be bound by social rules, Edna even went as far as to sign up as nurse to Dr. Brown – her son’s new competition as town doctor.
