Viewership of The Vampire Diaries slipped in season 7 with the loss of Nina Dobrev on the show’s roster. Many feel that the show has lost its steam with the departure of Elena. However, with Damon hearing Elena’s voice in the season 7 finale, the possibility of her return seems high. But how would Elena be able to return? Let’s discuss.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for season 8 of The Vampire Diaries.

According to TVLine, a new character will be introduced in season 8 of The Vampire Diaries. The character known as Sibil (set as a recurring role) will be a creature who is out to seduce Damon into turning into something evil. Sibil is immortal and can control other people, given the right amount of influence and power. Since the character is so mysterious and we know so little about her, a lot of theories are flying around about who she may be. One theory suggested by Movie News Guide is probably the most interesting — what if Sibil disguises herself as Elena in order to seduce Damon?

Since it wouldn’t really make sense to the story to bring back Elena right now without getting rid of Bonnie, bringing Nina Dobrev back as this new character could serve two purposes — appeasing fans by bringing back Dobrev, but also still serving the storyline that was created to discard her character. Also, given that season 8 will likely be the final run for the CW vampire drama, it would be fitting for Dobrev to return in some degree.

The Vampire Diaries is scheduled to host a season 8 panel at the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con, at which the first look at the all-new season will be screened. The show’s cast and producers will be on stage answering many questions for fans regarding what they can expect in season 8. If we’re lucky, maybe Dobrev will show up and confirm this theory herself.
