There were a lot of haters in the Supernatural
surrounding creator Eric Kripke's decision to cast Paris Hilton as a
special guest star in last night's episode
. I guess those fans forgot
that the phrase "In Kripke We Trust" exists for a reason, so this
morning, those haters are all eating crow.
The truth is that Paris Hilton was fantastic on Supernatural
She didn't stay for the whole episode, just the end, but when she
arrived, she provided plenty of laughs, action and social commentary.
It was better than I ever could've imagined.
Before the episode, I made a checklist of five things I wanted to see in the episode
. While I didn't get to hear the phrase "That's hot," I did get everything else. There were references to Paris Hilton's My New BFF
, The Simple Life
, her sex tape and her little dog, as well as a very tongue-in-cheek reference to House of Wax
, which she starred in with Jared Padalecki. The slightly too-long cutaway shot to Jared's face was priceless.
While most of these jokes came at Paris Hilton's expense, many delivered by Jensen Ackles, they still proved that Paris is a great sport who isn't afraid to poke fun at herself. Supernatural
found the right balance. The Social Commentary
Perhaps the best part of this episode, and one of the more unexpected twists, was that the Supernatural writers offered up some witty social satire and used Paris Hilton as the perfect vessel to deliver it. The demon using Paris Hilton's form was upset that humans used to worship gods, but now they worship celebrities.
Indeed, people like Paris are plastered on magazine covers and their trials and prison sentences are covered as breaking news. It was a clever way for Supernatural to use Paris herself as a metaphor for the demon. The Action
Many fans who were disappointed by Paris showing up on Supernatural
only wanted to see a bloody and gruesome death scene, a way of living out some cathartic fantasy. Well, they got their wish.
Not only did Sam cut off her head with an iron axe, but he took about five chops to do it, spraying her blood everywhere like an exposed fire hydrant. If that wasn't enough to satisfy fans, we got a special shot of Paris Hilton's severed head rolling around the ground. If that didn't bring a smile to your face, nothing will.
In the end, Paris Hilton's appearance on Supernatural
was far better than anyone could've expected. The show knew just how to use her, and Paris proved, in my opinion, to be an even better actress than Britney Spears on How I Met Your Mother
. So hopefully the next time Supernatural
decides to take a risk and do something that makes fans uneasy, they'll remember Paris and say to themselves, "In Kripke We Trust."
