The CW’s Fall lineup was officially announced today, and as expected, most of the schedule remains in tact with the three new shows fitting in exactly where they belong.  The decision to only schedule nine hours of original programming each week is a bit unusual for a growing network, but perhaps a more focused strategy will help the CW succeed.

The only major upheaval is Smallville, about to enter season 9, is moving to Fridays at 8pm to make way for the new drama The Vampire Diaries.  However, since Smallville is at the end of its run, it makes sense to prioritize the growth and development of new shows.

Here is a quick rundown of the new shows:

Melrose Place: A reboot of the original ’90s drama, the new Melrose Place will air with 90210 and features a talented young cast including Michael Rady, Supernatural and Harper’s Island star Katie Cassidy, and singer Ashlee Simpson-Wentz.  Like 90210, it will also feature return appearances by former Melrose Place stars, including Laura Leighton ads Sydney.

The Beautiful Life
: A dramatic look behind the scenes of the fashion world, the cast includes many beautiful people, including The O.C.’s Mischa Barton and High School Musical‘s Corbin Bleu.

The Vampire Diaries: Based on a popular book series, much like Gossip Girl, Twilight and True Blood, this new drama is about two rival vampire brothers going after the same girl.  It includes former Lost star Ian Somerhalder.
