We reported back in late September that the update at that time of the Pussycat Doll’s empire was that Lead Doll Nicole Scherzinger had released her second single, “Baby Love.”

Curiously, Nicole’s own website, as well as that of her label Interscope, chirpily inform you that you can now download Nicole’s first single “Baby Love.”

What’s going on here? Was “Whatever U Like” just some kind of mass hallucination? Was it the trauma from watching Britney Spears’ crash-and-burn VMA opener that made the viewing public simultaneously and spontaneously fabricate the performance of said song by Nicole and Lil’ Wayne in the pre-show? (If so, we all have clever minds, what with inventing that little bit Lil’ Wayne did about not being able to pronounce her last name.)

Or is there maybe something else at work? Although the Pussycat Dolls and the television show Pussycat Dolls Present have been wildly popular, is the label suddenly feeling anxious about Nicole’s ability to hold her own outside of the PCD world?

The first single “Whatever U Like” wound up with sluggish sales, poor iTunes feedback and less radio play than anticipated. So it’s possible the label is looking to give Nicole another fresh start by helping to create the impression that “Whatever U Like” just never happened at all. Based on the originally lukewarm response by the public, it seems like this might just be possible to do.

It’s also possible that her album is undergoing some re-tooling behind the scenes. The album was pushed back from an October 16 release date to November 6. It was then pushed back yet again due to the potential for Jay-Z and Chris Brown albums to be released on that same date.

As we gear up for the next season of Pussycat Dolls Present, Nicole’s potential solo challenges bring up a question. Is Nicole struggling because she’s solo? Or is it possible that the Pussycat Dolls are experiencing an overall downturn in popularity?
