Last week’s episode of How I Met Your Mother gave viewers a hefty serving of Lily (Alyson Hannigan) and Marshall (Jason Segel).  While I found the episode cute and interesting, it didn’t really put the spotlight on my two favorite characters: Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders).

Ever since Robin became Barney’s wingman in “Zip, Zip, Zip,” I’ve been rooting for these two characters to hookup.  From suiting up, hanging at cigar bars to playing laser tag, Robin and Barney seem destined to be a great couple.  Don’t get me wrong. I like seeing Ted and Robin whenever they rekindle their romance.  But there’s nothing more I’d rather enjoy than the unique chemistry between the show’s womanizer and the Canadian tomboy.

When they first locked lips while they were watching the Robin Sparkle’s second music video in “Sandcastles in the Sand,” it became clear that romance was in the cards for the two most awesome characters on How I Met Your Mother.  Sure, they tried to forget about sleeping together out of guilt (Robin felt bad for sleeping with her ex-boyfriend’s good friend while Barney felt guilty for breaking the Bro Code) but pretending it never happened wasn’t that easy.  It wasn’t just some random affair that was hastily written into the show to spice up the comedy.  It was something specially planned, it had all the potential to blossom into something beautiful and, most of all, it made sense.

Now that Barney is clearly in love with Robin, who still seems completely clueless and unsuspecting of the whole thing, there’s nothing left to do but to come clean.  So far, however, all his attempts have been futile.  His latest effort was in the episode “Benefits” where he finally confesses by saying “I love you” to Robin but she thinks he was just imitating Ted.

With Barney’s love for Robin unfolding little by little (and more people starting to notice), it’s only a matter of time before someone tells her or Barney cracks and comes clean.  My guess is that she’ll be appalled by this revelation but will eventually realize that she’s into him too.  I can’t help but be excited for these two characters because I’m sure it’s going to bring some pretty cool storylines for the show.

On the other hand, there’s a part of me that thinks that the Barney and Robin pairing might just thaw out eventually.  Seeing Barney in a relationship pretty much stains Barney’s “bachelor” persona, which is something the show has been building up for four seasons now and mostly why the show continues to thrive.  As a fan, I certainly wouldn’t want Barney to lose his “legendary” charisma.  But I’m sure the clever writers of this sitcom will find an “awesome” way to bring these two together without sacrificing too much. For now, fans will just have to…wait for it.

How I Met Your Mother airs every Monday at 8:30pm on CBS.
