fans, get ready for a new face to grace the halls of Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital when the medical drama returns for season 12 in the fall. Martin Henderson has been cast as a doctor, which will be a series regular role, according to TVLine
Henderson is no stranger to the medical world on TV. He previously played a surgeon, Dr. Ben Keeton, on creator Shonda Rhimes' Off the Map, which only aired for one 13-episode season in 2011 before being cancelled. More recently, he played Ben Gundelach on ABC's Secrets and Lies, which finished its first season in May.
Unfortunately, nothing is known at this time about Henderson's character, only that he will be a doctor. Recently, TVLine reported
that the show was looking for a "name" actor in his late 30's to late 40's who is "good-looking, charismatic and believable as a surgeon."
on possible actors that could fill that role, including Tom Everett Scott, Ioan Gruffudd, Ryan Phillippe, Michael Ealy and Matthew Fox.
Patrick Dempsey has been with Grey's Anatomy since the beginning, but Derek Shepherd was killed off towards the end of season 11. Obviously, no one can replace someone like him, but it doesn't come as a surprise that the producers want to bring someone in to try and fill that void.
In a statement from April
, Rhimes said, "Meredith and the entire Grey's Anatomy
family are about to enter uncharted territory as we head into this new chapter of her life. The possibilities for what may come are endless. As Ellis Grey would say: the carousel never stops turning." Now we know at least part of that uncharted territory will include Martin Henderson.
This isn't the only casting news that has come out of Grey's Anatomy
in recent days. Jason George, who plays Ben Warren, has been promoted
to a series regular.
