Battlestar Galactica: "No" to Movie, "Yes" to 'Caprica' Spin-Off
Wednesday, March 19, 2008

Battlestar GalacticaYesterday, the Sci Fi Channel held its upfront presentation in New York, complete with a Battlestar Galactica press conference featuring nearly the entire cast, along with creator Ronald D. Moore. BuddyTV was in attendance at the event, learning the scoop on the upcoming final season of Battlestar Galactica, the fate of the prequel spin-off series Caprica, and when the final 10 episodes of season 4 might air.

Not only will the series return to TV on Friday, April 4 at 10pm, but eager viewers can actually watch the entire episode online starting at noon earlier that day at scifi.com. The first 10 episodes were completed before the writers' strike, and while there's no official date set for the final 10 episodes, Moore said that it would likely be either n the fall of 2008, or possibly January 2009.

Most exciting to fans could be that the long-talked about series Caprica now has the greenlight. Moore announced that a two-hour TV movie, which could serve as a backdoor pilot, will begin production this spring and air in the fall. Longtime Battlestar Galactia fans knows that Caprica is a spin-off envisioned by Moore that takes place 50 years before the events of the current series, following the Adama family on Caprica before the First Cylon War. The show has been in discussions for a long time, and even Moore was surprised to learn that the show was picked up, not from the network, but from reading a story in TV Guide.

For now, however, the focus is on completing Battlestar Galactica. The cast just received their first post-strike script and will resume production next week. Moore stated that, in writing the final season, his primary goal is simply to bring everything home and do justice to the series he has created. When asked about possibly expanding to a Battlestar Galactica film after it's over, Moore's answer was a definite “No,” claiming the series would not translate well to the big screen.

Come back to BuddyTV over the next three weeks leading up to the season 4 premiere of Battlestar Galactica for more news and photos from from the BSG press conference, plus exclusive interviews with many of the show's cast members.

Will the 'Caprica' spin-off be any good?
