The Originals season 1 is coming to an end. At the heart of the story is the relationships between Elijah, Klaus and Hayley. She’s been kept safe throughout her pregnancy, but now the witches have her and want to sacrifice the baby for their ancestors. Will Elijah and/or Klaus be able to save her?

‘The Originals’: 17 Lies, Betrayals, Secrets and Alliances from ‘The Battle of New Orleans’>>>

I spoke with Daniel Gillies on the phone about Elijah’s relationship with Hayley and Klaus. It’s certainly a complicated one. Read on for edited excerpts from our conversation.

Over the last few episodes, Klaus has stepped up in regards to Hayley. He put together a nursery and has tried to protect her. How will Elijah’s new romance with Hayley affect the brothers?

Do you think it’s a new romance between Elijah and Hayley?

They’ve stepped it up a little bit where they are finally acknowledging it.

Don’t you think that — forget the physical, forget the fact that we’ve kissed, but don’t you think from the moment they sort of saw one another they were irrevocably ensconced in this relationship. I feel like that’s at least how we were playing it. It was sort of no choice.

It’s not a recent romance, there’s recent developments of the romance which are sort of necessitating some issues that they need to address. They’re going to have to talk about this sooner or later and yes certainly it’s going to create some friction, but they’ve got bigger fish to fry right now, like staying alive and making sure the baby comes safely into the world.

With regard to Klaus, I feel like those overtures of “Hey I build you a crib,” which he didn’t ’cause surely Elijah almost certainly built that nursery. Let’s be honest. I asked Phoebe [Tonkin], who plays Hayley, I said, “Phoebe, don’t you think that Elijah built that nursery?” And she said, “Yeah, that’s how I’m playing it. There’s no way in hell that I believe Klaus built that nursery.” Although, he was the one who sort of in a very grandiose fashion came in and said this is what I’ve been doing for you. … Elijah was always certainly a participant in that nursery. And I feel the overtures were possibly a little too little too late.

Elijah came to New Orleans to help Klaus find redemption and he thought maybe the baby would be that. Going into the finale, does Elijah still believe that Klaus’ redemption is possible?

Going into the finale, I think that Elijah had to be pushed very far to not believe his brother — the version of his brother he’d like to see more is in there. I’m in that quest to seeing his brother restored to the person that he remembers. I mean it’s a sad illness that Elijah has. He won’t ever really relent on trying to bring his brother this happiness.

I do think that if anything happens to Hayley and the baby however that could well be the straw that breaks the camel’s back That could well be the shattering element to that quest that I just mentioned of Elijah desperately rummaging around in Klaus’ soul for some redemption.

On the finale

There’s nothing to prepare you for the finale. These guys went all out. They erected this in such a way that the ax is about to split. Their kingdom is about to be swallowed. There’s nothing to prepare you.

The Originals airs Tuesday at 8 pm ET on the CW.
