This week, the official announcement finally came after months of speculation: Jorja Fox would be leaving the cast of CSI.  This was FOX’s decision, she wanted to move on, and the whole CSI team is sad to see her go.  The general assumption has been that Fox was gone for good and that Grissom and team would see no more of Sarah Sidle once she leaves CSI next month.  Well, not so fast CSI fans.  In a TV Guide interview with CSI executive Carol Mendelsohn, we learn that although Fox will leave the regular cast, she will return to CSI...eventually.

This may come as a surprise to some fans, a majot relief to others.  In the interest of not mis-quoting the source, here is the relevant passage from the TV Guide interview with Carol Mendelsohn:

Mendelsohn: If this was the very end for Sara Sidle on CSI, I don’t think I could have handled the last few months. But it’s not. Jorja was always No. 6 on our call sheet. We’re retiring No. 6, so it’s there for Jorja when she comes back.

She’s definitely returning?

Mendelsohn: Yes. You can count on it.

This season?

Mendelsohn: That I can’t say. But the fans will not have seen the last of Sara Sidle. Nor will Grissom.

It was also revealed that, in the end, the decision to leave was solely Jorja’s and that everyone at CSI wanted her to stick around. They also knew prior to shooting last season’s finale that Fox would be leaving the show this season.  If you’ve been paying attention, you know that the rumor mill has been rife with talk of Fox’s departure for a long, long time.  At least she’ll be back, right?

I can totally understand someone wanting to leave a show like CSI after this many seasons.  Although Sarah Sidle is a worthwhile, complicated character, it’s still a crime procedural and characters will always take a backseat to the crime of the week.
