The city of Gotham is full of villains, but come season 2, there will be one less baddie causing havoc for James Gordon, Harvey Bullock and the rest of the GCPD.

Star Jada Pinkett Smith, who plays Fish Mooney on the DC Comics TV series, has announced that she is not returning for season 2 of Gotham. The actress revealed that she only signed up for one season, and that year is about to come to a close.

Speaking with Extra, she said, “The year’s up. But you know what? You just gotta keep looking at the show and see what’s happening with Fish. The show is going to be an awesome finale. … I did my year and I had a good time.” This will certainly be a big loss for Gotham, since she’s one of the best characters on the show.

As you can see, Pinkett Smith is teasing that her final episode, the season 1 finale, is going to be “awesome” while also not revealing much about what actually happens. When asked if her character is going out with a bang, she remained coy, saying, “You gotta wait and see what happens.”

In recent episodes, Fish’s storyline has revolved around her being in an underground prison and raising her profile among the prisoners. In one of the more disturbing scenes, she even gouged her own eye out. How do you think this might play out for the end of her story?

The actress went on to say, “Then you never know … what Fish might have up her sleeve.” Does this mean she might return some day? It doesn’t look like she’s ruling it out. When discussing Gotham on Live with Kelly and Michael, she said, “She could show up anywhere, you never know.”

If Fish survives the finale, it wouldn’t be surprising if the producers and writers consider bringing her back in the future, especially considering how popular of a character she is with fans of the show.

In the same interview with Extra, Pinkett Smith also discussed being a fan of comics: “I’ve always been a comic book fan, so it was definitely a dream to be able to participate in an origin story of Batman with an original character. Who ever thought in a million years that I would have the opportunity to do that?” Take a look at the interview below:

Are you going to miss Fish Mooney on Gotham? Or do you think her storyline has run its course? And are you hoping she comes back in a future season if she’s still alive after the finale airs?

Gotham airs Mondays at 8pm on FOX.
