This episode recounts the time when the Lone Gunmen first got together, and the time when Mulder first meets them. All three of the Lone Gunmen are at some sort of technology convention where Byers works for the FCC, and Langley and Frohike are rival cable providers. Byers meets and immediately falls for a dangerous woman named Susan Modeski, who is not who Byers thinks she is.
