Last night, FOX‘s American Idol proved there is life after Simon Cowell by beating its own ratings for not only last week, but last season‘s comparable episode as well.On last night‘s episode, the final four competitors took on songs by legendary songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who wrote such classics as "There Goes My Baby," "Yakety Yak," "Hound Dog" and "Jailhouse Rock," just to name a few. Oh, and "Stand By Me." Can‘t forget that one. In any case, Idol outperformed last week and last year. It was up 5% from last week, and it beat last season‘s top four episode by 1%, with 24.96 million viewers. Looks like Idol still has some blood flowing through its veins, even after all these years. ABC is pretty confident in its current lineup because most of its current shows are returning to the exact same time slots. Last night, FOX‘s American Idol rose even further, up slightly from last week, and is sure to soar even higher for the season finale next week. With many of Wednesday‘s big shows out for the summer, Idol had little to no competition going into last night‘s two-hour singing extravaganza. On last night‘s episode, the final three competitors sang three songs a piece -- one chosen by coach Jimmy Iovine, one chosen by the judges and one chosen by the contestants themselves. The episode absolutely dominated ratings, with 24.36 million viewers. Going into the results show tonight, it‘s anyone‘s game. Last night, FOX‘s American Idol obliterated the competition with its season finale results show, beating out last week‘s results show and last year‘s finale by wide margins. On Idol last night, country singer Scotty McCreery took the title and became this season‘s American Idol. The finale had 29.3 million viewers, an absolutely staggering number. That‘s a 21% increase over last year‘s finale, and the first time in five years Idol has topped a previous season‘s finale.
