Last night, FOXs American Idol proved there is life after Simon Cowell by beating its own ratings for not only last week, but last seasons comparable episode as well.On last nights episode, the final four competitors took on songs by legendary songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who wrote such classics as "There Goes My Baby," "Yakety Yak," "Hound Dog" and "Jailhouse Rock," just to name a few. Oh, and "Stand By Me." Cant forget that one. In any case, Idol outperformed last week and last year. It was up 5% from last week, and it beat last seasons top four episode by 1%, with 24.96 million viewers. Looks like Idol still has some blood flowing through its veins, even after all these years. I imagine the show will be around for a long time yet to come.

Dancing with the Stars, Castle, Body of Proof, The Middle, Modern Family, Greys Anatomy, Private Practice and Desperate Housewives are keeping the network anchored with returning favorites on nearly every night.

Last night, FOXs American Idol rose even further, up slightly from last week, and is sure to soar even higher for the season finale next week. With many of Wednesdays big shows out for the summer, Idol had little to no competition going into last nights two-hour singing extravaganza. On last nights episode, the final three competitors sang three songs a piece -- one chosen by coach Jimmy Iovine, one chosen by the judges and one chosen by the contestants themselves. The episode absolutely dominated ratings, with 24.36 million viewers. Going into the results show tonight, its anyones game. Last night, FOXs American Idol obliterated the competition with its season finale results show, beating out last weeks results show and last years finale by wide margins. On Idol last night, country singer Scotty McCreery took the title and became this seasons American Idol. The finale had 29.3 million viewers, an absolutely staggering number. Thats a 21% increase over last years finale, and the first time in five years Idol has topped a previous seasons finale.
