We've had a few days now to discuss and digest the 2008 Emmy nominations. Much vitriol has been spewed towards the always-wrong Emmy voters (by nature, they can never totally be “right”), and it mostly revolves around lack of respect for The Wire or whichever critically acclaimed series you may think was snubbed. Yes, The Wire's lack of nominations is a damn shame, but we knew it was going to happen. It's not a happy show, it requires a five-season commitment to appreciate and no one watched it. So, while most snub talk has focused on the scripted shows, I'd like to shift focus to the reality categories. In my mind there were two major snubs; one unsurprising and frustrating, the other surprising, yet just. Phil Keoghan was left off the list for Best Reality Host, and Survivor was absent from Best Reality Series – Competition.

There is a new category this year for the Prime Time Emmy Awards, and it has me quite excited. Probably far more excited than I should be. It is for the Best Reality Show Host. The Emmy Nominations will be announced next Thursday morning, July 17, and while we have a fairly good idea who the contenders are for the major awards, thanks to leaked short lists that have hit the internet over the past couple of weeks, we have no idea who the contenders for Reality Host will be. While the categories for Best Reality Show are split into Reality Show and Reality Show – Competition, the Host category is a veritable free-for-all. If you host any sort of prime time reality series, you are eligible. Since prognostication is part of the BuddyTV repertoire, we thought it'd be nice to take a look at who likely will be nominated and who, in a perfect world, should be.

Kate and Pat, remember them? The pair competed together on The Amazing Race 12, and though they were the second team eliminated last season, the duo made an impression. The Amazing Race is famous for casting interesting teams and Kate and Pat were one of those teams. Two women, two episcopalian pastors, who had been a couple for over ten years. It's not everyday you find two lesbian members of the clergy racing around the world and, regardless of your belief system, Kate and Pat were exceedingly likable. Now, thanks to California's new gay marriage laws, Kate and Pat were married on Wednesday in a Santa Monica church in front of family and friends.

Life is very confusing. Sometimes, TV can help you figure stuff out on accident. Example: I had always assumed that I loved Survivor and The Amazing Race because of the suspense, because I didn't know what was going to happen next. So, last year, when I inadvertently read the spoilers (big, big spoilers) for both of those shows that extended deep in the season, I assumed that my viewing experience would be ruined. This turned out not to be the case. I was shocked to discover that I enjoyed both series just as much knowing the result as I did not knowing them. It's not like I seek out spoilers these days, but I am no longer deathly afraid of them. Therefore, when I found some big-time spoilers for the new season of The Amazing Race (premiering September 28), I read them without hesitation, seeing as it was journalistic duty.

The Amazing Race is back! Well, in September it is. Nonetheless, the critically acclaimed reality series is set to return from its longest hiatus ever in the Fall. The Amazing Race had a bizarre 2007-2008 season. It was kept off the Fall schedule, and was initially to be used as a stop gap for the impending writers' strike. It was set to air in the Winter, but when Viva Laughlin went all Viva Laughlin on the world and had to be mercifully canceled after one episode, The Amazing Race stepped in in the Fall. As a result, the season ran its course, and with no additional season in production, the usual Spring edition of The Amazing Race was absent. Fans need not worry about the future – The Amazing Race 13 will air in the Fall, and CBS is already casting for The Amazing Race 14.

The Amazing Race is critically-acclaimed, it wins Emmys, and is well-respected within the television establishment. One of The Amazing Race's key cogs is host Phil Keoghan, an amiable Kiwi who has been the face of the series since its debut. In anticipation of the upcoming Emmy nominations and the Fall debut of The Amazing Race's 13th season, Keoghan discussed his state of mind with TVWeek.

CBS has renewed The Amazing Race for a 13th season. There has seemingly always been uncertainty regarding the future of The Amazing Race, the series always being on the verge of cancellation. The series' 12th season was originally intended to air in early 2008, but when Viva Laughlin stunk up the joint, CBS quickly plugged Race into their Sunday at 8pm time slot. The series averaged around 12 million viewers for season 12, in large part thanks to its NFL football lead-in.

When Blake Mycoskie's time on The Amazing Race in 2002 took him to Argentina, the sight of shoeless children during his return visit left enough of an imprint on him to rouse him into concrete action. Despite failing to win that edition of The Amazing Race, Mycoskie had little time or inclination to fret or pout. Instead, he devoted himself to doing all that he could for those barefoot kids he saw playing even without shoes.
Back in August, we reported on the former Amazing Race contender's TOMS Shoes venture, which he set up specifically to allow for shoes to be made available to the likes of those Argentine children. We check back on his progress since, courtesy of a story by CBS 11 News.
