The 4400 debuted its fourth season with slightly more viewers than its overall average last season, but nearly half as many that tuned in for the season three premiere. Season three brought a healthy 4.2 million viewers, while Sunday’s premiere brought in 2.5 million. This could mean that The 4400 has just boiled down to its hard core audience, but fans and network execs alike will be watching the trends with trepidation as the weeks pass. As far as the premiere itself, it marked a return to The 4400 at its best.

Meanwhile, Diana (Jacqueline McKenzie) returns, Kyle’s (Chad Faust) power manifests, and Isabelle ( Megalyn Echikunwoke) finds out if her powers are permanently gone. Or are they?

The 4400 returns to its mystical best with the third episode of its fourth season, “Audrey Parker’s Come and Gone.” Of the “Extra Crispy” centric episodes this was probably the best for many reasons. The idea of a different Promicin induced power a week seemed risky at first, with the assumption being that the tale of the “Original Recipe” 4400’s would be lost in the change of formula. “Audrey” proved that the soul of the original 4400 is still screaming through the mysteries of the new tales loud and clear.

I was more than a bit concerned when I came into the fourth season of The 4400. The concept of the extra crispys seemed like a desperation move for The 4400. Formula tweaking. Would the original recipe be forgotten? Four episodes later, those concerns are just a distant memory as the show continues to dovetail these new elements into the classic overarching tale, heading for a new arch that can only be called apocalyptic both for the architecture of the show and the world it takes place in.

If you were waiting for the pivot point to arrive between The 4400s original recipe, and the new extra crispy plotlines, “The Marked” was it. Since The 4400 returned with its focus mostly on the proliferation of Promicin both to characters we know, and a whole host of interesting new ones, the question has been how till this tie into the original overarching mythology that continues to run beneath the surface.

The 4400 “No Exit” flies under the ‘episode with an moral banner, as in no real advancement in the serialized aspects of the series, but a very cool abilities-centric episode with a message for the characters and – why not – for the rest of us as well. As far as one shots go, “No Exit” is certainly one of the best executed so far, relying on familiar locations and an ensemble of performers at the top of their game.

As many of you probably know, I had the opportunity to visit the set of V a couple weeks ago. I spent most of my time in Father Jacks (Joel Gretsch) office, waiting around to interview the actors. I was even given a tour of Erica Evans (Elizabeth Mitchell) house and part of the V spaceship. I can say, with all honesty, the cast and crew are extremely friendly and they all have faith in the show. Despite the ratings dip in the second week, viewership is still strong and the story is stronger than ever.Last week, Erica Evans worked to prove that her partner, Dale, was working with one of the terrorist organizations. Unfortunately, she worked alone. Father Jack was timid to help and had difficulties learning who to trust. Luckily, he came around by the end of the episode and decided to join forces with Erica to take down the Vs. The two of them hope to build a resistance.
