There hasn't been a second of film shot for Smallville's upcoming eighth season, but we've already been discussing the shake-ups behind the scenes for months. We've known for quite some time that Michael Rosenbaum and Kristin Kreuk wouldn't be returning full-time next year, and last week we reported that Allison Mack waited until the last minute to sign on for season 8. With all of that excitement going on, it appears that another major Smallville departure got overlooked. Actress Laura Vandervoort, who plays Supergirl on the CW series, recently told TV Guide that she also won't be back as a series regular next season.

For a variety of different reasons, the seventh season is often the end of the road for many television shows. The contracts for some actors end after seven seasons, and when you have a hit show it can be pretty pricey to sign them on for another year or two. Another problem many shows face is the fact that they simply run out of steam in that amount of time, either creatively or in the ratings. These are all things that the CW is going to have to consider now that Smallville is nearing the end of its seventh year on the air. The network recently renewed the series for another season, but keeping all of the actors in place has proved a challenge.

Previously on Smallville: Lex killed his dad to get the key to open the safety deposit box to get the Krytpo-Graph to start the clock to get the pick to put in the device that gave him the map to the Fortress of Solitude.
For the first time I can remember since I started watching Smallville, there's a “previously on” package, so you know this is big. Edward Teague is on a jet to South America and the flight attendant is Kara (Laura Vandervoort). She wants to know where the device is and when he refuses, she picks him up and knocks him through the window. He tells her to ask Lex, then she takes off as the jet goes down, Oceanic 815-style.

It looks like there will be a few familiar faces on Smallville next season after all. Last week, we mentioned the possibility that Allison Mack may not return for the show's eighth season. Following the departures of Michael Rosenbaum and Kristin Kreuk, Mack's reps were playing hardball with Warner Brothers in an attempt to get their client a better deal. Their tactics must have paid off, because TV Guide's Michael Ausiello announced today that Mack has signed on to appear in every episode of Smallville's eighth season.
Not only will Chloe return, but Ausiello is reporting that one of Smallville's greatest recurring characters may also come back to town.

The CW announced its fall schedule today and it features all good-looking people. I suppose one could make the argument that all television features good-looking people, but not to the extreme extent that the CW has taken it. You see, most of the CW's Fall schedule not only features good-looking people, the series themselves are about those people being good-looking, or at least it's a very important part of the series. There are three hours of new programming on the CW's Fall schedule, one of which may include the most highly-anticipated new series going into next season.
Before any Reaper fans go ballistic and worry about why the series isn't on the Fall schedule, don't worry. The CW has ordered 13 episodes of Reaper, which will hit the air at mid-season. There's a very good chance that it will take over Smallville's time slot at some point, but nothing is set in stone.

Last week on Smallville, Lex was attacked by a cloaked stranger who carved Kryptonian symbols into his chest, a message intended for Clark. Chloe and Clark discovered that one members of the Veritas clan has survived and was hiding in a church. And Clark and Lex raced to be the first to find this mysterious Veritas member, who holds the key to Clark's survival.
This week, the seventh season of Smallville comes to a close. Read on for spoilers on the episode called “Arctic.”

The notorious rivalry between Clark Kent and Lex Luthor has slowly been building up on Smallville for seven seasons. After years of anticipation, we'll finally get the battle we've been waiting for in next week's season finale, "Arctic." On last night's episode, Lex obtained the final object he needed to point the way to the Fortress of Solitude, and as the promo for next week's installment showed, that's the first place he's headed. Will the epic standoff between good and evil live up to our expectations, or will Smallville's seventh season go out with a whimper instead of a bang? Read on for some spoiler-free theorizing about what might happen in the finale.
