Last week on Smallville, Lex was attacked by a cloaked stranger who carved kryptonian symbols into his chest, a message intended for Clark. Chloe and Clark discovered that one members of the Veritas clan has survived and was hiding in a church. And Clark and Lex raced to be the first to find this mysterious Veritas member, who holds the key to Clark's survival.
This week, the seventh season of Smallville comes to a close following 20 installments of the science fiction series. Read on for spoilers on the episode called “Arctic.”

The notorious rivalry between Clark Kent and Lex Luthor has slowly been building up on Smallville for seven seasons. After years of anticipation, we'll finally get the battle we've been waiting for in next week's season finale, "Arctic." On last night's episode, Lex obtained the final object he needed to point the way to the Fortress of Solitude, and as the promo for next week's installment showed, that's the first place he's headed. Will the epic standoff between good and evil live up to our expectations, or will Smallville's seventh season go out with a whimper instead of a bang? Read on for some spoiler-free theorizing about what might happen in the finale.

Previously on Smallville: If Clark Kent never came to Earth, his dad and Sheriff Adams would still be alive, Chloe would be engaged, Lana would be married with kids in France and Lois would be editor-in-chief of the Daily Planet. Yet somehow we were supposed to think Clark being on Earth is a good thing.
Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) has his newfound Krypto-Graph studied by an antiquities expert (played by Donnelly Rhodes, Doc Cottle from Battlestar Galactica!) who doesn't know what it is. Once he's alone, Lex angrily stares at the fire when the Zurich “bank manager” rushes in and knocks Lex out. He then carves a Kryptonian symbol into Lex's chest.

If Smallville's upcoming eighth season experiences any more shake-ups, it's possible the show may become completely unrecognizable. As we've previously reported, creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar are leaving at the end of the current season, and actors Michael Rosenbaum and Kristin Kreuk will not appear full-time next year. Allison Mack's contract is also up at the end of season 7, but until today it was thought that she was a lock to sign up for Smallville's eighth year. Now, according to TV Guide's Michael Ausiello, Mack's participation in the next season of Smallville may not be a sure thing. Could the series survive without Chloe Sullivan?

Last week on Smallville, Clark got transported into a vortex where he got a glimpse of what life would be like if he had never arrived on earth, which resulted in his newfound desire to go back in time to Krypton to save himself as a baby.
Expect more action to ensue in the episode “Quest,” which airs this Thursday at 8pm on The CW.

It looks like Clark Kent is going to have to battle some new villains when Smallville returns for its eighth season in the fall. In a statement released to the press, actor Michael Rosenbaum confirmed the rumors that he will not be returning to the show as a series regular next year. While Lex Luthor may not be around to stir up trouble, the producers already have plans to bring two new villains to the Smallville universe. The first is one of Superman's most notorious baddies, while the other remains a bit of a mystery.

Previously on Smallville: Lex went to Zurich and found the magic Kryptonian compass that will lead him to the Fortress of Solitude (I'm guessing). Clark spent the whole time worrying about Kara instead of worrying about the fact that a megalomaniacal billionaire was close to finding the secret to have total control over Clark.
Clark (Tom Welling, who also directed this special 150th episode) pours of Dr. Swann's Krypto-Journal with messages from Kara on Krypton in the past. He's distracted by a photo of Lana, but Chloe (Allison Mack) arrives to pep him up about the fact that he should make the quantum leap in time back to Krypton to stop Brainiac from destroying the ship with baby Kal-El. I guess Brainiac got his hands on the Master's Paradox Machine.

I'm starting to wonder if Tom Welling is destined for a career as a director after Smallville wraps up in the next couple of years. Unlike many television actors, Welling doesn't seem all that interested in pursuing movies or other acting gigs while his series is between seasons. He's also spent some time behind the camera while on Smallville, having directed two episodes of the series in the first six seasons. Welling's third outing in the director's chair, "Apocalypse," airs this Thursday on the CW. The 150th episode of the series finds Jor-El showing Clark what life would be like if he had never arrived on Earth.
To get fans ready for "Apocalypse," we have some promo pictures, a trailer, and a behind-the-scenes look at the episode.
