FOX Upfront Preview: 'Back to You' Canceled, Abrams and Whedon Shows on the Way

It's network upfront week, everybody!  Over the next few days, all of the major networks will unveil their Fall schedules, which shows have made the cut, which have been canceled, and which new shows will be invading network TV next season. FOX is a network whose 2008-2009 TV slate is looking mighty interesting.  On the docket for next season: a new J.J. Abrams series, a new Joss Whedon series, and a new Mitchell Hurwitz (creator of Arrested Development) series.  In advance of their upfronts this Thursday, a number of reports from Variety and TVGuide have surfaced relating to the fates of both new and old FOX shows, including Fringe, Dollhouse, Back to You, Til Death, and New Amsterdam

New Amsterdam: Season Finale Airs Tonight

new amsterdamThe pilot season of New Amsterdam is coming to a close tonight following only eight episodes of the FOX drama series.  The show features Nikolaj Coster Waldau as John Amsterdam, a New York homicide detective who happens to be immortal due to an ancient spell that hinders his aging until he finds his one true love.

New Amsterdam was originally given a 13-episode order and was scheduled to premiere in the fall of 2007.  However, it was held as a mid-season replacement and began airing on March 4 instead. While the show initially fueled mixed reviews due to its familiar premise that echoes works such as the 2003 novel Forever and the 1992 vampire detective series Forever Knight, New Amsterdam still managed to attract a solid fan base, who are now hoping that the first season ender will deliver enough of a bang to get picked up again for a new season.

New AmsterdamLast week, FOX's new, immortal-centric crime-solving drama, New Amsterdam, debuted via two episodes on Tuesday and then again, on Thursday.  Its Tuesday premiere won the 9pm time slot, making New Amsterdam the second highest-rated show of the night, following American IdolNew Amsterdam drew in a total of 13.7 million viewers, successfully keeping 44 percent of American Idol's lead-in 28.2 million.  On its second broadcast Thursday evening, New Amsterdam fell 20 percent from its numbers on Tuesday, managing to attract 10.6 million viewers as it went up against heavy favorite, Lost.

Tonight, New Amsterdam hopes to regain its audience with another new installment, the third in its current maiden season.

The saga begins in the year 1642.  John Amsterdam, played by Nikolaj Coster Waldau, is a Dutch soldier in what was then known as New Amsterdam.  He intercepts the onslaught of a sword in order to save the life of a Native American girl during the massacre of her indigenous tribe.  In exchange for his sacrifice, the lass calls on an ancient spell that bestows upon John the gift (or curse) of immortality.  The girl informs him that he will remain ageless until he comes upon his one true love, at which point he will once again be ripe to lead a mortal existence.

Alexie Gilmore on New AmsterdamAlexie Gilmore, star of the forthcoming FOX drama series New Amsterdam, will be appearing in the new romantic comedy, Definitely, Maybe, next year.  The film revolves around a political consultant who tries his best to explain his impending divorce and past relationships to his 10-year-old daughter.

Aside from Gilmore, who plays Olivia in the movie, the cast of Definitely, Maybe also includes Ryan Reynolds as Will Hayes, Elizabeth Banks (Scrubs) as Emily, Rachel Weisz as Summer Hartley, Abigail Breslin as Maya, Kevin Kline as Hampton Roth, Derek Luke as Russell McCormack and Isla Fisher as April.

Nikolaj Coster Waldau as John AmsterdamFOX' s upcoming drama, New Amsterdam, might not be so new after all.

Recently, best-selling author Peter Hamill told the Associated Press that the series, which is scheduled to premiere midseason, bears a great resemblance to his 2002 novel, Forever.  Hamill's fans have also taken notice of the apparent similarities, though the writer does not seem eager to pursue the matter legally.

His immortality was given to him by a Native Indian girl he saved back in 1642. The girl’s spell can only be broken when he finds his one true love.

Although John’s lengthy time in this world has allowed him to experience many adventures and develop his talents, he has watched people around him, including his loved ones, grow old and pass away, leaving him alone to carry his burdensome gift.

The series is under the direction of Lasse Halstrom, who is also credited as one of the show’s executive producers.
