Tonight marks the first time since "Seinfeld" was on the air that NBC can truly say Thursday is Must-See TV. It‘s rare these days to find a two-hour block of comedy on network television, let alone good comedy. Comprised of, in order, My Name is Earl, The Office, Scrubs, and 30 Rock, NBC‘s new Thursday night schedule is the biggest coup of the season, at least to me. NBC may be struggling these days, but I really like what they‘ve done this season. They only canceled one show I liked (Kidnapped), and kept on two very good shows (Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and Friday Night Lights) that have been receiving mediocre ratings.  Read more »

Stop motion engineer Rob Ronning and his team, whose credits include Nightmare Before Christmas, have been given the task of creating a two minute stop-motion animated sequence featuring the characters of My Name is Earl for the comedy‘s November 18th episode. In the episode, one of the characters suffers a bump on the noggin and starts seeing the world in Tim Burton-vision (or Rankin Bass vision if your a purist, like me.) The additional two minutes of footage are also being used to expand the episodes time slot cut in on-top of My Name is Earl‘s normal running time.If stop motion animation rednecks weren‘t surreal enough, the episode of My Name is Earl will also feature a guest appearance from Christian Slater. Read more »
Ugly Betty premiered and proved fairly stiff competition for Survivor, scoring a 4.9 ratings share to Survivor‘s 5.8. Grey‘s Anatomy beat CSI again, which makes feel warm and fuzzy inside. My Name is Earl is still trending downward and, for the second week in a row, The Office has improved on Earl‘s ratings in the second half of the nine o‘clock hour. ER is still holding steady, leading the ten o‘clock hour in front of ABC‘s new and boring Six Degrees. -Oscar Dahl, BuddyTV Senior Writer Read more »
Well, so it begins. The carousel is getting started and the under performing television programs are meeting their inevitable fates. I don‘t totally disagree with anything that either FOX or NBC are doing, but I always question the point of producing shows that any normal guy could see were destined for failure.Who on earth thought that the Lithgow/Tambor golden years comedy 20 Good Years would succeed? Anyone? Well, no more. 20 Good Years has been given the old boot and will be replaced by, to add insult to injury, a special two-hour edition of The Biggest Loser. Ouch. Here‘s the complete rundown of the changes: Read more »
My Name is Earl, The Office, Scrubs, and 30 Rock, all in a row. Could a comedy lover ask for more? NBC, finally, wisely, brought back the Must-See Thursday line-up, a sight for sore eyes. The category of Best Actor in a Comedy Series has always been full of heavyweights. This year is no different. The Golden Globe nominees in this category are big names and all quite deserving, but I have a couple questions (though they may be deemed moot for eligibility reasons). The dearth of comedy on TV these days has thinned out the field, but what remains is still formidable.Digressing for a second; Isn‘t it about time we nominate voice actors in a category? Think about who would be nominated in a Best Voice Actor - Comedy category: Read more »

In an uncommon sign of good sense, NBC has announced that they‘ll attempt to rekindle that old "Must See TV" magic and schedule the network‘s four best comedies from 8-10PM on Thursday nights. In order, NBC will air My Name is Earl, The Office, Scrubs, and 30 Rock one after the other.Thank the Lord. I can‘t believe it‘s taken this long for NBC to consolidate the (far and away) best comedies they produce. Those fours shows are, arguably, the four best live-action comedies on TV today (although, How I Met Your Mother might have something to say about that). What took NBC so long?  Read more »
