FOX put a lot of time and money into The X Factor, Simon Cowells new singing competition show that he promises is nothing like American Idol, and when it comes to the ratings, hes right. The show got off to a slow start averaging just over 12 million viewers over its two-hour premiere.By comparison, American Idols latest season premiered with over 26 million viewers and stayed above 20 million all season. In addition, The X Factor also did worse than Americas Got Talent and was about on par with the premiere of The Voice. For The X Factor to do less than half that while giving away a $5 million prize is a bad start if FOX wants it to be the new face of the network. This looks like it could be a one-and-done experiment that goes horribly wrong.

Today the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and the NAACP both announced their annual awards nominations. While there are several gay and African-American characters on TV, these awards usually highlight the lack of diversity by picking out such obscure nominees. The effect only emphasizes how few roles for African-Americans there really are on mainstream television.

This years Screen Actors Guild Awards almost felt like last years ceremony, where the same people won the same awards (more or less), but there were a few pleasant surprises in tonights proceedings. But first, to the (in some cases, disappointing) non-surprises: HBOs Boardwalk Empire won both Best Ensemble in a Drama Series and Best Male Actor in a Drama Series (for Steve Buscemi), the same awards the show won last year. Betty White won her second SAG Award in a row for her role in the comedy Hot in Cleveland, while Alec Baldwin won his sixth straight SAG Award (yes) for 30 Rock. Unfortunately, that meant a shut-out for Steve Carell, who was nominated for his final season in The Office.View all the nominees for this years SAG Awards

Unfortunately, Ricky Gervais wasnt the high point in this years Golden Globe Awards. His return to the show saw the Brit comedians quips neutered, despite his best attempts to really rip the Hollywood establishment apart. Sure, there was his F-bomb, and there was his pretty good take on Natalie Portmans pregnancy causing a nomination drought, but it was the establishment -- Madonna and Colin Firth, specifically -- who properly ripped into Ricky. Not that Im a heartless guy. I really wanted Ricky to succeed, especially after how he hosted last years Golden Globes.See the full list of this years Golden Globe nominees

For dramas, however, there were some big surprises, none more shocking than the nomination for Patrick J. Adams from USAs Suits.

When Comedy Central created the Comedy Awards last year, it seemed like a joke. In fact, South Park devoted an entire episode to mocking the concept of an awards show for comedy. The cast and creator Steve Levitan from the hit ABC comedy Modern Family gathered to discuss the show -- at the heart of it all is a group of very funny, witty people. I know, such a surprise. Ive had the chance to cover other PaleyFest panels and this cast is the one where I truly believed them when they said they love coming to work every day, and that the cast is like their second family. I can only imagine how much fun they have on the set.
