The Emmys Report: Drama Lead Actor and Actress Races

June 9, 2009

A lot is made of the overwhelming number of great leading roles for women on cable, but if the official Emmy ballots are any indication, women are still a minority when it comes to starring TV roles.  On the official ballot sent to Emmy voters, there are 70 contenders for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, but only 48 for the Lead Actress category.

But the numbers don't help the major networks.  Despite the fact that more than 60 percent of the potential nominees come from the five major networks, it's the cable guys and gals who take the lead at the Emmys.

The Emmys Report: The Drama Series Race

June 8, 2009

The ballots are out, the race is on, and soon we will know which lucky shows and actors will be nominated for this year's Emmy Awards.  This year the main categories have been expanded to six nominees due to the increasing volume of shows produced.  The official Emmy ballot for Outstanding Drama Series lists 76 eligible shows, but that includes everything from last year's winner, Mad Men, to "no chance in Hell: submissions like The Secret Life of the American Teenager.

So who is actually in the hunt?  Last year proved that cable networks have finally broken through as it was the first time a cable network other than HBO scored a nomination in this category.

The Emmys Report: McDreamy and 'Big Love' Ladies Change Categories

May 28, 2009

The end of May means it's time to start campaigning for the Emmy Awards.  Many shows have already started hitting voters with giant For Your Consideration DVD sets to get the coveted nominations.  This season, however, there's a lot of gamesmanship going on for category placements as actors are moving from Lead to Supporting or vice versa in order to improve their chances at a nomination.

The biggest change is coming from Grey's Anatomy, where McDreamy himself Patrick Dempsey is dropping down to the Supporting Actor race after failing to get nominated as a Lead Actor for four years.  While some might criticize the move as blatantly mislabeling himself in order to score a nomination, it's actually a bigger indictment on the show itself.

'Mad Men' Season 3 Set for Summer Broadcast

May 7, 2009

Fresh off its Golden Globe victory for Best TV Drama, Mad Men returns this summer for its highly anticipated third season despite prolonged contract negotiations between producer Lionsgate TV and creator/exec producer Matthew Weiner.  There hasn't been an exact date for the premiere, sources have confirmed that it will return around August.

TV Guide's Mickey O'Connor announced: "Tell you what, I can officially narrow down the "summer" return date to early August.  As with last season, don't expect tidy resolutions to the finale's cliff-hangers -- e.g., Peggy's revelation to Pete, Betty's pregnancy, Joan's rape -- since the show will most surely jump ahead in time again."

Golden Globes: 'True Blood','Mad Men' Among Nominees

December 11, 2008

The Golden Globe Awards honor the best in both television and movies, and though they're not taken as seriously as the Emmys or the Oscars, they're still a lavish, star-studded affair.  However, the glitz was put on hold last year due to the writers' strike, forcing the producers of the show to cobble together an awkward news conference to announce the winners.  This year, with no strike in sight, the Globes are back to being as glamorous and exciting as ever.  The ceremony is set to air on NBC on Sunday, January 11 at 8pm, and is bound to be attended by a cavalcade of big stars.

The nominees for the 66th Annual Golden Globes were announced this morning, and below you'll find a list of all the television categories.  Shows like True Blood, Mad Men, 30 Rock and The Office received multiple nominations, while other critically acclaimed shows were surprisingly omitted.

'Mad Men' Star Jon Hamm Talks About Role

November 3, 2008

Having an award-winning series leading his career, Mad Men's Jon Hamm is breaking down barriers.  Despite being on the premium cable network AMC, the show's success has encompassed the expectations of both critics and audiences.  After his phenomenal work on the recently wrapped-up second season, Jon Hamm opens up to AMC about his character of Don Draper.

Asked about any differences in approach regarding the character, Hamm answered that he continued to portray advertising exec Don Draper with the same amount of passion.  “He's still the same character.  His circumstances have changed a bit, but what's really been cool about this show is we don't see a lot of what transpired over the fourteen months that we skipped over.  It's cool that we maintain that little bit of a mystery.”

'Mad Men' Star Impresses in Season 2 Finale, 'SNL' Skits

October 27, 2008

On the same weekend that Jon Hamm delivered a hilarious turn as host of Saturday Night Live, the critically beloved Mad Men wrapped up its phenomenal second season.  One of Hamm's memorable SNL skits had him doling out advice on how to pick up women while in character as Don Draper, but on Mad Men, Draper's love for the ladies nearly destroyed his marriage.  By the end of Sunday night's finale it appeared that Betty was finally willing to forgive her husband for his indiscretions, but can their marriage survive?  We'll have to wait until season 3 to find out.
