He joined the 27th precinct as a homicide detective and approached police work by strictly sticking by the book. Because of his drastic approach, he often clashed with his partner, Lennie Briscoe. He took an early retirement when his wife Deborah’s multiple sclerosis significantly worsened.

law & orderPaul Sorvino was noted for his role as Detective Sergeant Philip Cerreta on NBC’s Law & Order. For 31 episodes, he played an Italian-American Catholic who used charm and good conduct as part of his approach in investigating cases. Prior to his work as a police officer, he served in the military. He joined the 27th precinct, replacing Greevey and gradually developed a close working relationship with Mike Logan. In the course of an undercover operation, he was shot in the chest. Although he survived, he retired from being a street cop since some of his nerves were severely damaged during the shootout, and just took a desk job at the 110th precinct.

After playing an executive assistant D.A. for 13 seasons, Sam Waterston is finally moving up.

When Law & Order returns for its 18th season, fans can expect to see Prosecutor Jack McCoy (Waterston) taking over the New York District Attorney’s Office, replacing D.A. Arthur Branch, who was portrayed by Fred Dalton Thompson. Earlier in the year, the former US Senator announced his bid for the presidency in the upcoming elections, and ultimately felt it was necessary to make his exit from the NBC crime drama series.

NBC Officially Picks Up Law & Order

After the buzzing news over Law & Order’s possible cancellation due to significant ratings drop, the police procedural series has finally been picked up by NBC for an 18th season, making the legal drama the second-longest running drama in television history, next to Gunsmoke, which aired for 20 years from 1955 to 1975.

Law & Order, which premiered in September 1991, centers on the detectives’ work in solving crimes and the legal action surrounding it. The current cast includes Milena Govich, Sam Waterston, Fred Dalton Thompson, S. Epatha Merkerson, Jesse Martin, and Alana de la Garza.

Will Law & Order Be Back for Another Season?

Because of the significant drop in the show's ratings, the NBC crime drama Law & Order faces the possibility of cancellation at this year’s announcement of fall lineups.

Since Law & Order began in the 1990’s, it has incurred numerous recognitions, which include a 1997 Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series. In addition, the show has been incarnated three times, with each spin-off garnering its’ own fan base. Two of the incarnations, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Law & Order: Criminal Intent, are still on the air, while the other and most recent, Law & Order: Trial By Jury, only ran from March to May of 2005. The cancellation of the show’s third installment led creator Dick Wolf to say, "I was incredibly upset, disappointed, dismayed, any other adjectives that you could care to add.”

Law & Order veteran Fred Thompson Makes his Bout with Cancer Known

Because of his plans to run for president in the upcoming 2008 elections, former senator Fred Dalton Thompson, known for his role as District Attorney Arthur Branch on NBC's Law & Order, felt compelled to reveal the truth about his bout with Non-Hodgkins lymphoma. He made the announcement on both the Fox News Channel and ABC Radio.

The 64-year old Republican from Tennessee pointed out that he is currently in remission, and has remarked that the low-grade lymphoma is “literally irrelevant in terms of my daily routine.” He was diagnosed with the disease almost three years ago while undergoing one his routine physicals and the doctor found a small bump just under his left jaw.
