Back in July of last year, we reported that actor, Linus Roache, was joining Law & Order as the new Executive Assistant District Attorney (EADA). His baptismal of fire came last week when the long-running flag bearer of the Law & Order franchise returned to television.
Now on its 18th season, Law & Order kicked off via a special two-hour premiere last Wednesday. Tonight, it resumes its original time slot at 10pm. For the British Roache, it took doing a bit of homework in order to familiarize himself with the show and the city it calls home.

Law and Order is back from the dead. It was never really dead, I know, but after a full season of banishment into a dreaded Friday night time slot, and another half of the year completely off the air, it kind of felt like Law & Order was gone for good. Thankfully for fans of the ageless procedural, Law & Order is returning to air waves for its eighteenth season on Wednesday, January 2 for a two hour premiere. The following week, Law & Order will settle back into its long time Wednesday 10pm ET/PT time slot. Starting on that Wednesday, January 9, Law and Order: Criminal Intent will act as the original L&O's lead in, airing at 9pm. Criminal Intent had been banished to the purgatory of basic cable on the USA Network, where new episodes have been airing. NBC will start from the beginning of Criminal Intent's new season, and re-air the episodes on NBC.

Sam Waterston is most well-known as Assistant District Attorney Jack McCoy on the durable drama Law & Order. Fans can see him on TV multiple times a day thanks to the immense popularity of the show's numerous reruns. This Saturday at 10pm on ABC, viewers can see a different side of Waterston when he stars in the first segment of a four-part anthology series titled Masters of Science Fiction.
The series takes sci-fi stories from notable authors in the field and is narrated by Stephen Hawking. People expecting robots and aliens and massive ray guns will be in for a surprise, because the first installment starring Waterston, "A Clean Escape," is a psychological piece dealing with a man with severe memory loss, though it's set in the future with plenty of sci-fi twists.
Sam Waterston spoke to BuddyTV about how he got involved in Masters of Science Fiction and also about taking over the role of lead district attorney on Law & Order after 13 years. Below you will find a complete transcript of our interview, plus the mp3 audio file.

Law & Order has just hired a new prosecutor. As we reported earlier, the legal drama will be returning for a new season with Sam Waterston's character, Jack McCoy, taking the place of Fred Thompson's character, Arthur Branch, as District Attorney. This consequently leads to an available position for a new Executive Assistant District Attorney. But before Law & Order even hits the air, actor Linus Roache has already been added to fill in the vacancy.
"I've known Linus' work for several years. He is an actor who totally gets inside his roles. I think he and Sam are going to raise the bar and add intellect and passion in the back half of the show," NBC, Universal Media Studios and executive producer Dick Wolf announced.

Benjamin Bratt became a household name when he was cast on Law & Order as Detective Rey Curtis. He joined the 27th precinct as a homicide detective and approached police work by strictly sticking by the book. Because of his drastic approach, he often clashed with his partner, Lennie Briscoe. He took an early retirement when his wife Deborah’s multiple sclerosis significantly worsened.

Paul Sorvino was noted for his role as Detective Sergeant Philip Cerreta on NBC’s Law & Order. For 31 episodes, he played an Italian-American Catholic who used charm and good conduct as part of his approach in investigating cases. Prior to his work as a police officer, he served in the military. He joined the 27th precinct, replacing Greevey and gradually developed a close working relationship with Mike Logan. In the course of an undercover operation, he was shot in the chest. Although he survived, he retired from being a street cop since some of his nerves were severely damaged during the shootout, and just took a desk job at the 110th precinct.

After playing an executive assistant D.A. for 13 seasons, Sam Waterston is finally moving up.
When Law & Order returns for its 18th season, fans can expect to see Prosecutor Jack McCoy (Waterston) taking over the New York District Attorney’s Office, replacing D.A. Arthur Branch, who was portrayed by Fred Dalton Thompson. Earlier in the year, the former US Senator announced his bid for the presidency in the upcoming elections, and ultimately felt it was necessary to make his exit from the NBC crime drama series.
