Time may be running out for NBC's Journeyman. According to inside sources, the Peacock network is considering pulling the show in two weeks unless ratings improve. The news comes shortly after NBC announced that fellow new drama Life would be given a test-run in Journeyman's Monday at 10pm time slot on December 3, following the Heroes fall (and likely season) finale.
The news could not come at a worse time for fans of quality serialized television already reeling from the writers' strike and its impact on shows like 24 and Lost. Slowly but surely, Journeyman has developed into one of the most intriguing shows on TV. The plight of San Francisco journalist Dan Vasser (Kevin McKidd) and his sudden time traveling jumps is becoming even more dramatic as the FBI is digging into his life, getting closer to the truth.

After jumping back in time for a series of adventures, Dan Vasser (Kevin McKidd) soon finds himself on a quest for a serial kidnapper. The exploration begins in tonight's episode of Journeyman entitled “Emily.”
Broadcast on NBC, Journeyman follows Dan Vasser, a reporter who uncontrollably shifts through time and space, enabling him to make some changes in a person's destiny that doesn't always turn out for the better. In the present, he has a wife named Katie (Gretchen Egolf), who knows what is going on with her husband's time-traveling, and a son named Zack (Charles Wyson), while in the past, Dan reconnects with Livia Beale (Moon Bloodgood) his ex-fiancée whom he lost in a plane crash.

The British, the Scots and other Europeans have come. Yes, more of the old world's finest and fairest have invaded, if not yet completely conquered, fall television. Leading the pack as the central star of the established House is Hugh Laurie. Then we have a fresh influx of imports for freshman fare including Damian Lewis on Life, Michelle Ryan on Bionic Woman, Sophia Myles on Moonlight and Kevin McKidd on Journeyman. As regular headliners in their respective programs, stars like them have had little recourse but to uproot themselves and their significant others to the U.S., at least while their shows remain on the air.
Kevin McKidd and his young family have made such a move to sunny, amber-bathed Los Angeles, where they have chosen to put up roots for at least the next five years, while Kevin stars as the Journeyman.

Journeyman is a paradox as far as televisions shows go in this day and age. It is easily the best new character drama on television, but continues to offend potential viewers with it's stinky science fiction exterior. Not that Journeyman is bad science fiction at all, it's just that primetime audiences by and large have a low tolerance for science fiction that is either too smart, or not overtly fantasy driven (Lost or Heroes). I don't know what is worse, the prejudice against the genre in general, or the pickiness of the of target audience.

Those who have stuck with the character rich science fiction of Journeyman know that the show is a rare commodity, despite its slipping ratings. Its paradoxical place in the television universe as an expertly crafted character piece nuanced by the clichés of time travel pulp science fiction make Journeyman as far from a ‘niche' show as one could possibly get. Journeyman is, in fact, more for those expecting multiple layers of pomp and circumstance seasoned with a touch of the bizarre. None the less, the show does have a chance, and with the peek into the mythological aspects of its story last week, and the fortuitous order of three more scripts from NBC, the layout of the coming weeks could either make or break Dan Vassar's chance at securing a back nine.

Halloween is almost upon us, and various television series are gearing up to launch their respective special episodes in line with the upcoming spook-centered holiday. NBC's Journeyman has issued a press release regarding the show's sixth episode, which is slated to air on Monday, October 29.
However, before all the spoilery, here's a little overview of what Journeyman is about for all those who are not so familiar with the show. Journeyman revolves around a San Francisco reporter and family man named Dan Vasser (Kevin McKidd). For some unknown reason, he begins to travel through time and changes people's lives. Along the way, he must also deal with difficulties brought on by his sudden disappearances. To make matters more complicated, he runs into his long-lost fiancée, Livia (Moon Bloodgood) while time traveling.
That said, read on for episode 1.06 spoilers.

On its second week airing, NBC's fledgling Journeyman was down under a million viewers from its debut figure of 9.2 million last week to Monday's 8.4 million. At this early juncture, it's still far premature to say much about the numbers except that Journeyman may still manage to take advantage of a strong lead-in from Heroes.
For those who've become early fans of the show, series creator and executive producer Kevin Falls clues us in on some little known creative and behind-the-scenes details via his personal blog on NBC's official Journeyman site.

Journeyman has emerged as NBC's most steadfast new show, managing to retain all of its audience and actually build in key demographic areas. The Sci Fi drama has been a critical success with fans as well, beginning to generate a low roar of buzz centered on its gradually accreting mythology and intelligent character treatment. It's Achilles heel, however, continues to be the misconception that Journeyman's core concept has been over done. I spoke briefly with Journeyman creators Kevin Falls and Alex Graves directly about that criticism.
