It's rollout week for CBS' arsenal of fresh material for many of its popular crime/police/forensic dramas and procedurals. Criminal Minds leads the charge with its episode entitled “Damaged,” which is the show's first new episode since the conclusion of the three-month long writers' strike. “Damaged” airs tonight at 9.
Immediately following the all-new Criminal Minds is CSI: NY's own first original post-strike offering. Tonight's feature picks up the trail of the case the team originally faced in “Down the Rabbit Hole” back in October. Yes, the CSI franchise is officially back! CSI: Miami kicked things off with a wedding-set murder last week, followed by this week's back-to-back, two-part cliffhanger.

As reported previously, the CSI franchise is among the CBS programs that have been renewed for the 2008-2009 season. Additionally, the network has also announced the return dates for the forensic dramas, beginning with CSI: Miami, which will air new episodes on March 24. The network is reportedly planning to add eight new episodes to the 13 that were produced before the writers' strike began.
On the other hand, CSI: NY and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation are expected to be back in April. New York will air the first of seven planned episodes on April 2, and CSI will start the next night. CSI: NY and Miami will both end up with 21 episodes for the current season, but CSI will come up short with only 17. The drama produced 11 episodes before the strike and is going to add six more during the next few months.

With the three-month old WGA strike coming to an end, networks have gradually started to generate plans to salvage what's left of the current TV season. According to The Futon Critic, CBS is planning to film additional episodes of all three CSI series, to be aired some time in April and May. While this news might get fans' hopes up, the following information is still likely to change.
CSI: NY, the second spin-off series from the original CBS forensic drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, is expected to shoot six to seven new episodes to air in April or May. Like CSI: NY, CSI: Miami and CSI are likely to film six to seven fresh episodes that are also set to air in April.

Despite filling the void with reruns, CBS' CSI: NY surprisingly thrives in the ratings, joining Criminal Minds as the only scripted drama to top the highly promoted premiere of ABC's Lost in terms of viewers.
CSI: NY, a police procedural drama about a team of forensic scientists who serve the New York City Police Department by investigating mysterious crimes and unusual deaths, was first in households (10.2/16), viewers (15.78m), but second behind the time period return of Lost in adults 25-54 (6.0/14), adults 18-49 (4.9/12) and adults 18-34 (3.7/10). The forensic series won over the mystery-adventure series by over one million viewers (vs. 14.68m).

As hinted in a previous article, the last pre-strike episode of CSI: NY will finally shed light on the blurry line between real and virtual crime-solving as the forensics team continues their pursuit of the killer that has escaped in “Down the Rabbit Hole.” So far, only a few details have been revealed about this much-awaited episode until now.

This season, CSI: NY has made a big leap by combining both live actors and virtual avatars from the online world Second Life in the episode “Down the Rabbit Hole.” This installment, which aired on October 24, 2007, sends Mac (Gary Sinise) into cyberspace to track down an assassin, but his efforts failed towards the end as killer is nowhere to be found.
Though it ends with a cliffhanger, the forensic team finally sheds light on the blurry line between real and virtual crime-solving as they feature a new episode next month.

CBS has quietly made some changes in this week's primetime schedule. With its first-run cupboards nearly empty, the network has taken out originally scheduled new episodes of NCIS, Criminal Minds and CSI: NY, and has replaced them with repeat episodes from earlier this season.
NCIS took the first blow in the adjustments made by the network with its Tuesday broadcast of "Bury Your Dead," the premiere episode of season 5, instead of the episode “Tribes” in which the NCIS team investigates the murder of a Muslim Marine near a mosque.
